The RINGS (Resilient and Intelligent NextG Systems) program is a new initiative led by the NSF and DoD to accelerate research on resilient and intelligent next-generation networking and computing systems. The program will fund projects developing advanced wireless technologies, edge/cloud computing, cognitive networks, microservices, and AI/ML with the goals of making networks more resilient to failures and attacks, enabling low-latency M2M communication, and providing on-demand computational resources. Resiliency is defined as high tolerance of disruptions with rapid fault identification and graceful service degradation. The program seeks to extend advances in SDN, NFV, and AI to transform networks.

• The Resilient and Intelligent Next-Generation Systems program
– a new initiative that seeks to accelerate research in areas with potentially significant impact on Next-Generation networking and computing systems. • Key federal agenicies part of the RINGS initiative – • NSF • U.S. Department of Defense • other tech leaders like NSIT , apple , ericsson etc.
• today’s communication networks are not resilient or
performant enough • the networks of the future require a system-level mindset that addresses all layers of the protocol stack. • Enable machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and • Provide low-latency computational and storage resources on-demand at the edge and in the cloud.
PROJECT PPT October 19, 2023 5 / 10
What Resiliency Really Means
• Resistance to or high tolerance of attacks, failures, and service
disruptions, with rapid root cause identification • Graceful degradation of services and rapid adaptability when resource availability is impacted by disruptive events
PROJECT PPT October 19, 2023 6 / 10
Why Resiliency difficult
• Base system components, such as towers, antennas,
fiber-optic cables, computing, storage devices, and software systems and services are susceptible to failure during extreme weather events. • Increasing reliance on ML/AI techniques within the network may expose additional attack vulnerabilities.
PROJECT PPT October 19, 2023 7 / 10
Summary
• RINGS program will extend and accelerate the network
transformation that began with SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV) and continues with advances in programmable accelerators and AI/ML solutions
