OBJECTIVES:
• Automatic Circuit Recloser (ACR) is an intellectual protective device capable of interrupting fault
current and which purpose is to increase distribution system reliability. Their function is to
automatically disconnect a section of feeder in the event of fault, such as a short circuit. After a
certain period of time, the recloser makes a specified number of attempts to re-energize the line
to restore power supply to consumers.
• Thanks to the function ACR in circuits with protection with grading of time, it is possible to quickly switch
off first by implementing instantaneous protection. A quick shutdown reduces the arc duration to a
minimum, which reduces the risk of line damage. Protection with a short time delay protects the system
against damage fuses and eliminates the pre-arc appearing on the switch.

TYPES OF RECLOSERS
•
• Are used to protect single-phase lines such as branches or
taps of a three-phase feeder. They can also be used on
three-phase circuits where the load is predominantly single-
phase. When a permanent phase-to-ground fault occurs,
one phase can be locked-out while service is maintained to
the remaining two-thirds of the system.
• Due to the lighter weight of the single-phase recloser
compared to larger three-phase reclosers, single-phase
reclosers are typically mounted directly to the pole or
substation steel structure individually by the built-in mounting
hanger bracket which eliminates the need for an additional
mounting frame.
• Single-phase reclosers can be controlled with a hydraulic
control (integrated within the recloser tank), or an electronic
control (housed in a separate enclosure) based upon the
recloser design.
