WHAT IS AUTOMATIC CIRCUIT RECLOSER (ACR)
• The ACR (Automatic Circuit Recloser) system is used to automatically switch on the device after a
specified time, only if it was open during protection operation during temporary or non-permanent
network disturbances. ACR system is used in HV (High Voltage) and MV (Medium Voltage) networks with
ring systems, in which there are no problems of system stability.

• Automatic Circuit Recloser (ACR) is an intellectual protective device capable of interrupting fault
current and which purpose is to increase distribution system reliability. Their function is to
automatically disconnect a section of feeder in the event of fault, such as a short circuit. After a
certain period of time, the recloser makes a specified number of attempts to re-energize the line
to restore power supply to consumers.

• Thanks to the function ACR in circuits with protection with grading of time, it is possible to quickly switch
off first by implementing instantaneous protection. A quick shutdown reduces the arc duration to a
minimum, which reduces the risk of line damage. Protection with a short time delay protects the system
against damage fuses and eliminates the pre-arc appearing on the switch.

WHY USE A RECLOSER?

WHAT ARE TEMPORARY FAULTS?

TYPES OF RECLOSERS

• Are used to protect single-phase lines such as branches or
taps of a three-phase feeder. They can also be used on
three-phase circuits where the load is predominantly single-
phase. When a permanent phase-to-ground fault occurs,
one phase can be locked-out while service is maintained to
the remaining two-thirds of the system.
• Due to the lighter weight of the single-phase recloser
compared to larger three-phase reclosers, single-phase
reclosers are typically mounted directly to the pole or
substation steel structure individually by the built-in mounting
hanger bracket which eliminates the need for an additional
mounting frame.
• Single-phase reclosers can be controlled with a hydraulic
control (integrated within the recloser tank), or an electronic
control (housed in a separate enclosure) based upon the
recloser design.

WORKING PRINCIPALS OF AUTOMATIC CIRCUIT RECLOSER

• Recloser is continuously reading real-time data about the power

line using current transformers and voltage sensors. In the event of
a fault, when the voltage, current, or frequency values exceed the
settings of the microprocessor relay protection device, the recloser
control sends an impulse to the drive of the switching module
located on a pole.
MAIN FUNCTIONS OF RECLOSERS
• Recloser can be used both to perform simple protective functions and complex algorithms for
automation of distribution networks. Modern reclosers perform the following functions:
• Automatic disconnection of damaged line sections;
• Auto-reclosing;
• Automatic restore of power supply from the network of alternative power source
• local and remote network reconfiguration;
• Self-diagnostics;
• Measurement of network mode parameters;
• Keeping the logs of operational and emergency events in the line;
APPLICATION OF RECLOSERS

FEEDER APPLICATION: RADIAL LINE RECLOSER

• When a recloser is installed on a radial feeder it automatically

clears transient faults and isolates permanent faults. More than one
recloser can be installed on a feeder to isolate faults selectively and
ensure fewer customers are affected.
