INFRATRUCTUR GAP : JAVA ISLAND AND OUTSIDE JAVA ISLAND

Infrastructur is the basic facilities and system serving a country, region, or community. While
the facilities, equipment, or similar physical assets like bridges and roads are essential to an
economic, infratructure also enables citizen to particiate in the social and economic comunity.
Infrastructure often involves the production of either public goods or goods that lend themselves
to production, it is typical to see public financing, control, supervision, or regulation of
infrastructure. Examples of infrastructure include transportation systems, communication
networks, sewage, water, and school systems.

The need for infrastructure in Indonesia is increasing along with the rapid increase in
population, lack of sector investment and uneven infrastructure development for decades until it
reaches its peak. There are differences between infrastructure projects on the island of Java and
other regions in Indonesia. This difference cannot be separated from the fact that a lot of
infrastructure was built by the Dutch Colonial Government on the island of Java. Since the Dutch
East Indies era, Java has been the center of government and economy.

There is various infrastructure on the island of Java, such as factories and even industrial
complexes supporting infrastructure such as land transportation includes roads, toll roads, and
railways, air transportation such as airports and sea transportation are available harbor. Apart from
that, on the island of Java too is an educational center, there are many forms of good education
formal or informal. Formal education starts from elementary level up university level.

However, infrastructure conditions outside Java, such as the availability of electricity and
access roads, still make investment costs expensive. Train routes in North Sumatra only run
between cities, not between provinces like on the island of Java. The infrastructure conditions on
Kalimantan Island are inadequate so that Kalimantan Island is less attractive than Java Island in
the context of regional competitiveness.

Currently, the condition of infrastructure outside Java has developed, causing investment to
flock to outside Java. Regional economic growth and development has now shown significant
improvement compared to the previous two year period.
