Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the
Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
The following are some reminders in using this module:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.

not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Let’s Learn
This module was designed and written for the Junior High School Grade 7 learners.
This will help you learn the difference between linear and non-linear texts. Also, the
module will help you understand how to interpret graphs, charts, and/or tables.
The language used recognizes the various vocabulary levels of learners. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard structure of the K to 12 curriculum learners.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. identify linear and non-linear texts;
2. explain the difference between linear and non-linear texts;
3. appreciate the importance of transcoding information from graph or tables;
4. identify the parts of a graph;
5. read and interpret data presented in diagrams and/or tables; and
6. construct a simple graph.

Module Transcoding Linear and

7 Non-Linear Texts and Vice
Versa
Linear and non-linear texts are used both in academic and non-academic
articles. It allows readers to choose on what kind of reading path they will use. We
may encounter novels, poems, letters, textbooks, or even newspaper articles in the
linear texts while flowcharts, maps, graphs and charts are examples of non-linear
texts.

2
Let’s Recall
ADVANTAGES OR DISADVANTAGES
DIRECTIONS: In the midst of the COVID-19pandemic, give some advantages and
disadvantages of this situation. Copy the table on a separate sheet of paper and
write your answers there.

Let’s Explore
Linear and Non-Linear Texts
Reading is fun! Every word has its style and it can be enjoyed by the type of
the reader who is reading the texts. The reading path of the reader can be either
linear or non-linear. The way the readers take in reading through a text can be
chosen. A linear text is the most common type of text. It needs to be read from
start to end. In linear texts, grammar and style are being focused. Meanwhile in
non-linear texts, having an orderly sequence is not required. Non-linear texts use
visuals to assist the readers in understanding the meaning of the texts.
Below are the samples of linear and non-linear texts:

FACTS ABOUT COVID-19
What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of
coronavirus. ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this
disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ The COVID-19
virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) and some types of common cold.

Let’s Elaborate
Types of Texts
There are two types or classifications of texts. These are:
1. Linear Texts
2. Non-linear texts
The difference between linear and non-linear texts mainly depends on their
reading paths. Since linear texts have a sequential order, they have only one
reading path. However, non-linear texts have multiple reading paths since they are
non-sequential.

EXAMPLES OF NON-LINEAR TEXTS

A. CHARTS OR TABLES– these are the representation of data presented by
symbols or legends.

CHARTS

Figure 1.1 Total Cases of Covid-19 Worldwide as of June 11, 2020 Figure 1.1 Total Cases of Covid-19 in the Philippines

B. LINE GRAPH
The graphical display of information of this graph changes continuously over
time. It is a common type of chart which displays the information as a series of
data points connected by line segment to show a trend.
Figure 2. Daily Cases of Covid-19 in the Philippines

C. BAR GRAPH
This graph presents data with rectangular bars with different sizes that may
run horizontally or vertically. The longer the bar, the greater the value. Bar graphs
are better for comparing larger changes or differences in data among the group. It
shows numbers that are independent of each other.

Organization in regions presented horizontally.

4
D.PIE GRAPH
This graph is a circular chart which is divided into slices or portions to
illustrate proportions. The breakdown of the items is in percentage presented in a
slice of a pie. The key to a pie chart is that all of the slices must be equal to 100%.

Information transfer is of two types: the verbal and non-verbal. The verbal
transfer includes the linear text that needs to be read from beginning to the end. In
non-verbal transfer, information is presented in diagram, graphs or charts.
It is a skill that one should possess. If not, misinformation will happen.
In the previous lesson, we learned about the different types of linear and
non-linear texts. Now, we will learn how to transcode information presented in
diagrams, charts, tables, graphs, etc. into linear texts and vice versa.
A. Transcoding Non-Linear to Linear Text
Non-linear writing is an interpretation of information presented graphically.
Tips on how to do the information transfer:
1. Spend 5 minutes reading the 5. If there are two graphs – compare.
graphs/charts etc. 6. Think about the time period – tenses.
2. Make sure you understand axes. 7. Vary your vocabulary.
3. Make sure you follow lines on graph. 8. Organize information clearly.
4. Focus on the key information. 9. Write neatly. Answer the given
questions

B. Transcoding Linear to Non-Linear Text

When extracting information from a written text to transfer to a non-linear
text such as a table or an organizational chart, here are some steps you
could follow:

Step 1: Read the passage to get a general idea of the subject matter.

Step 2: Identify what information needs to be presented and

determine which non-linear text is suitable for it.

Step 3: Transfer the relevant information from the passage to the

selected non-linear text.

Step 4: Categorize the data. Use only key words or phrases to label
information – not whole sentences. You may have to come up with
your headings.
