CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the

background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study and scope

and delimitation.

Background of the Study

A key element or aspect of an individual’s wellbeing and overall well-

being is sex education. It is a significant benefit of healthy lifestyle and psychological

health. As a crucial component of health care and promotion, this suggests that sex

education should be offered and accessible to everyone (Oganwu, 2003). Sex education

refers to a broad category of instruction that covers human sexual anatomy, reproduction,

intercourse, and other topics related to sexual behavior. On the basis of claimed ethical

values and principles, it can be considered to be a method or set of procedures that

promotes the preservation, improvement, and growth of the human person and family

(European Expert Group on Sexuality Education, 2016). According to Mavedzenge,

Doyle, and Rose (2011), education is the process of teaching to children the knowledge

they need to conduct themselves appropriately and relate to others. Omale (2015)

described sex education as more than just a component of teaching about pregnancy and

childbirth and human reproduction. Instead, programs with a broad scope and objectives

that help young people incorporate sexual values, ideals, and norms would give them a

fundamental understanding of almost every aspect of sex education and help them spot

false information, sexual abuse, and exploitation so they can interact effectively with

people who have different sexual values, ideals, and norms.

The student's behavior reflects the interaction of their temperament and inherited

personality, the history of their experiences, and the particular nature of each situation.

Most of the time, it is impossible to say how much each of these components contributes

to a particular manifestation. Additionally, the ratios vary from student to student and

even from situation to situation for the same student. Although it can be challenging to

change a student's personality when they exhibit troublesome behavior, it is feasible to

change their behavior by understanding and dealing with challenges in the environment

and by implementing the right interventions (Joshi D., Gokhale V., Acharya A., 2021).

Students’ behavior towards sex education refers to how students engage with and respond

to sex education programs and information. This can include their attitudes, actions, and

interactions related to sexual health and relationships.

According to Reinhardt, Mletzko, Sloep, and Drachsler (2012), awareness is the

comprehension of other people’s acts and behaviors that provide a context for one’s own

behavior. Awareness does not refer to a particular category of the mental or intellectual

state that exists apart from or independently of action. However, a person who is aware of

problems or anything. According to Noorriati, Shireen, and Hashim (2013), awareness

includes knowledge of who is nearby and inside, what activities or actions are taking

place, who is interacting or communicating with whom, and how each person is

perceived in daily work contexts. The level of awareness towards sex education refers to

how informed and knowledgeable a person or a community is about various aspects of

sexual health, relationships, and reproductive matters. It can encompass awareness about

safe sex practices, consent, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), contraceptives,

puberty, and the emotional aspects of sexual relationships.

A higher level of awareness about sex education is generally associated with more

responsible and informed behavior among students. It’s important to consider other

factors, including cultural influences and the quality of education, that can also shape

students’ attitudes and behaviors in this context. Effective sex education programs should

aim to raise awareness while promoting positive and respectful behaviors. Students’

attitudes about sex education and their understanding of it had a significant relationship,

and that respondents had extensive knowledge of sex education. Students need to be

made aware of the issue and receive effective sex education (I.Y. Ademuyiwa, S.J.

Ayamolowo, T.E. Oshinyemi, K.J. Oyeku, 2023).

Many students in Culianan National High School are facing the challenges of

teenage pregnancy due to their active engagement in sexual activities. Sexual activities

are difficult to avoid, especially when they're being influenced and staying in an

environment where most of these activities are being witnessed. Understanding their

awareness and behavior regarding sex education is essential in devising effective

strategies to reduce these instances and provide young individuals with the knowledge

and guidance they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health. This

research aims to contribute valuable insights that can ultimately help improve the well-

being of students and address a significant social concern

Thus, the researchers aim to determine the level of awareness and students’

behavior towards sex education among senior high school students.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the level of awareness and students' behavior

towards sex education. Specifically, this research aims to answer the following research

questions:

1. What is the level of awareness among senior high school students about sex education?

2. What is the level of students' behavior toward sex education among senior high school

students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the level of awareness and students'

behavior?

4. Is there a significant difference in the level of awareness when data is categorized into

profiles?

5. On the basis of the findings, what intervention design or plan can be formulated?

Significant of the study

The findings of this study will benefit the following entities:

School administrator - can provide school administrators with a deeper

understanding of the awareness levels and behaviors of senior high school students

towards sex education. This knowledge can inform evidence-based decision-making and

the development of effective initiatives to promote sexual health and well-being among

these students.

Teachers - this study will help the teachers encourage and help their students to

understand the importance of taking care of their sexual health and would be able to

analyze the importance of implementing sex education more making them aware enough
to recognize and acknowledge the factors why lots of students are being pregnant at such

a young age.

Parents - this study will provide them insights and data to support their efforts in

promoting comprehensive sex education and creating a supportive environment for their

children.

Students - this study will serve as guide and help to them making the right

decisions regarding the behavior of sexual activities. This study focuses on them and help

preventing the occurrences of teenage pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases (STDs).

This will add knowledge to them and to make them avoid engaging to sexual activities.

Future researchers - this research study could serve as a basis of supporting

evidence, opposition, or as a reference to justify your study that is related to this research

by understanding and sharing the knowledge that we gathered to our fellow students.

Scope and delimitation

This study will be focused on the level of awareness and students' behavior

towards sex education among senior high school students. This study will be limited to

senior high school students of Culianan National High School who were officially

enrolled in the second semester of the year 2023-2024.
