Hello Class! I hope that everyone is having a great morning so far. Last week in Chapter 10,
we discussed Skin Analysis and how to determine a client's skin type.
Today, we are going to dive into Chapter 11. We are going to learn about product knowledge
and the use of ingredients for customized skin care products.
Why is skin care important? Why is knowledge and use of ingredients important?
Let’s look at our Motivation Quote of the Day - “ I did then what I knew how to do.
Now that I know better, I do better” - Maya Angelou
It is important to because as skin care specialists, we now know better. We know that taking
care of our skin is important for more than just our appearance. We know that our skin is
the largest organ we have and it is essential to our overall health. As an esthetician, having
a clear understanding of products and ingredients helps you to address clients' skincare
concerns and needs, safely and effectively, as well as educating them on how to maintain
healthy skin. As estheticians, we will do detailed skin analysis, we listen to your clients skin
concerns and goals, and then we use our product knowledge and the use of ingredient
knowledge to design customized skin care treatments for our clients. Based on the client’s
consultation, skin analysis and skin type we then personalize facials that could include
extractions, facial massage, targeted treatments, masks, serums, moisturizers and more.
Not only do you want our clients to leave happy and relaxed but with a refreshed confidence
in their skin and knowledge to be ready to maintain an at home skin care routine with ease.
In this chapter, we will learn why skin care product knowledge and ingredients are important
aspects for an esthetician. How ingredients and product knowledge are important in
selecting and avoiding products to use during your customized facials and treatments. We
will go over what the active and inactive ingredients do in the product and how to use your
knowledge and understanding to educate your clients.

Summary and Review:
In Chapter 11, we have covered a lot of information about knowledge and use of ingredients
for customized skin care products. We have learned that active and inactive ingredients play
a huge role in understanding and utilizing the product in the treatment room and can not
only help maximize client results, but also allow you to be able to mix and match different
products to create customized treatment. We learned why skin care is important and why
knowledge and use of ingredients is important.
As estheticians, we now know better. This knowledge and understanding allows you to be
able to address a client's needs safely and effectively. We know that taking care of our skin
is important for more than just our appearance. We know that our skin is the largest organ
we have and it is essential to our overall health.
We learned today why skin care product knowledge and ingredients are important aspects
for an esthetician. This allows you to educate yourself, so in turn you can educate your
client. As an esthetician, it is our job to have a good understanding of products and their
key ingredients that you use. Remember it is also important to always remain a student and
want to learn more. Stay informed. Each skincare product line will offer additional training
classes and certifications for their products and have product and ingredients manuals.
These are very effective tools. Utilize and refer to these tools often as necessary.
1. Have the students review while we go over the key point guided notes sheet provided
from today's lesson.
2. Have the students complete the Evaluation Activity Worksheet - Match the Ingredients
Test students' knowledge by having the students complete the evaluation classwork activity
during class time, so the instructor is available to answer questions if needed.
