• GELIA T. CASTILLO • Her most significant contribution to the field of forestry is her
work on social forestry, which she pioneered in the Philippines
in the 1970s. Social forestry is an approach to forest
management that emphasizes the involvement of local
communities in forest conservation and management. Castillo's
research and advocacy helped to establish social forestry as a
viable and effective approach to forest management, not just in
the Philippines but around the world.
• ANGEL CHUA ALACALA • Angel Chua Alcala was a Filipino biologist who was named
a National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014. Alcala is
known for his fieldwork to build sanctuaries and to promote
biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystems of the Philippines. He
was the Chairman of the Board of Advisers at the Angelo
King Center for Research and Environmental Management
located in Silliman University. Alcala published more than
200 peer-reviewed articles and books and his biological
contributions to the environment and ecosystems have made
him a renowned figure of natural sciences in the Philippines.
• GEMINIANO DE OCAMPO • NS de Ocampo was the leader and pioneer in the
modern Philippine ophthalmology. A maverick during
his time, he introduced corneal transplantation in the
Philippines and designed a corneal dissector which was
later manufactured by Storz and Co., USA
• RAFAEL DINEROS GUERRERO III • He was recognized because of his scientific and
technical contributions to the growth of Sex Reversal
and Hatchery Techniques that help the commercial
fabrication of high yielding market-size tilapia in the
Philippines and other nations.
• CLARA LIM SYLIANCO • A Filipino scientist known on her works on mutagens, anti-
mutagens, bio-inorganic mechanisms and Carcinogenic
chemicals found in various fruits and vegetables. She also
authored schoolbooks that are still makes use in schools
nowadays. She has more than 50 scientific articles, 7 books
and 5 monographs to her name.Her books are used as
textbooks in college chemistry courses in many schools
throughout the country. Her research was primarily focused
around the chemicals found in fruits and vegetables. Her
findings led to the popularization of the ‘Coconut Oil’ diet.
• JOSE R. VELASCO • Dr. Velasco's pioneering and promising works in various areas of
plant physiology such as mineral nutrition, photoperiodism,
chemical weed control and plant growth in general, have
provided the basis of some important crop production
management practices as well as laid out research directions.
• HILARIO LARA • Lara began the first of many studies on the diagnosis, treatment,
and prevention of not one, but five infectious diseases. His
research on cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, measles, and
diphtheria proved to be invaluable in determining what caused
them and how to control their spread.
• JULIAN ARCA BANZON • Filipino biochemist and national a scientists of the Philippines.
Banzon is credited for research in alternative fuel. He researched
on the production of ethyl ester fuels from sugarcane and
coconuts and devised a method of extracting residual coconut Oil
through chemical means
• Teodoro A. Agoncillo was not primarily known as a Filipino
scientist but rather as a historian and scholar. He made significant
contributions to the field of Philippine history, particularly in the
study of the country's struggle for independence from Spanish
colonial rule. Agoncillo's most notable work is the book "Revolt
of the Masses," which provides a detailed account of the
Philippine Revolution against Spain.
