SCIENTISTS CONTRIBUTION
• CASIMIRO DEL ROSARIO • Soft X-ray, Ultraviolet

• JULIA ARCA BARZON • was a Filipino biochemist and national scientists of


the Philippines. Banzon is credited for research in
alternative fuel. He researched the production of
ethyl ester fuels from sugarcane and coconuts and
devised a method of extracting residual coconut oil
through chemical means

• ALFREDO SANTOS • Alfredo C. Santos was a notable Filipino scientist known for
his contributions to the field of chemistry. He is best known for
his work on coconut chemicals. Santos discovered methods to
extract valuable chemicals from coconuts, such as cocofatty
acids and cocodiethanolamide, which have important
applications in various industries, including the production of
soap, detergents, and cosmetics.

• GELIA T. CASTILLO • Her most significant contribution to the field of forestry is her
work on social forestry, which she pioneered in the Philippines
in the 1970s. Social forestry is an approach to forest
management that emphasizes the involvement of local
communities in forest conservation and management. Castillo's
research and advocacy helped to establish social forestry as a
viable and effective approach to forest management, not just in
the Philippines but around the world.

• GREGORIO T. VELASQUEZ • Dr. Gregorio T. Velazquez he called the "Father of study of


Phycology" her contribution in the field of science ks
Myxophyceace or blue-green algae . Gregorio Velasquez is
the first Filipino expert conduct comprehensive research
on the characteristics and uses of the indigenous
Myxophyceace. Velazquez spent 30 years studying the
different species of Myxophyceace in the Philippines.

• FRANCISCO FRONDA • Dr. Francisco Fronda committed more than 6 decades of


his life to teaching, research and additional services elected
as Academician in 1979. He contributed hugely to the
expansion of poultry industry not only in the Philippines
but in Asia region as well. In recognition of his original
contributions, the Philippine Association of Animal
Science in 1980; cited him as the Father of Poultry Science
in the Philippines and Father of Thai Poultry Industry
honor presented by Her Royal Highness, the Crown
Princess of Thailand in 1982
• ENRIQUE MAPUA OSTREA • Enrique Mapua Ostrea, Jr. Is a Filipino physician noted for
JR. his pediatric research and medicine studies. He designed
the Mectest kit that introduced the use of Meconium to
"Drug Test" a person whowas considered one of the best
and accurate methods of drug testing. Meconium
is the earliest stool of a mammalian infant. Unlike later
feces, meconium is composed of materials ingested during
the time the infant spends in the uterus: intestinal epithelial
cells, lanugo, mucus,amniotic fluid, bile, and water

• CARMEN CAMACHO • Carmen Camacho Velasquez was a Filipino parasitologist.


VELASQUEZ She specialized in parasites of the tropical fish of the
Philippines. She is known for her work on the taxonomy of
Digenea and was the first to describe the parasitic
nematode Capillaria philippinensis, which causes intestinal
capillariasis in humans . She discovered 32 new species
and a genus of digenetic tremanodes. She was named a
National Scientist of the Philippines in 1983

• ONOFRE CORPUZ • Dr. Onofre Corpuz is recognized for his sterling


contributions to the fields of political science and
Philippine social and economic history. The refreshing
trademarks of Dr. Corpuz' scholarly journey are an
unalloyed fidelity to facts, a disdain for unsubstantiated
claims and the courage to challenge existing orthodoxies
and familiar interpretations. The depth and breadth of Dr.
Corpuz' insights, his grasps, and illumination of difficult
abstractions and his intimate knowledge of the original
documents make him a model social scientist.
• GAVINO TRONO • Gavino Trono- is a Filipino marine biologist
dubbed as the "father of kappaphycus farming". He
was conferred the rank of national scientist of the
Philippines for contributions to the study of tropical
marine phycology, focusing on seaweed
biodiversity. He is currently a professor emeritus of
the university of the Philippines marine science
Institute. Thanks to his researches, seaweed farming
is now one of the most important livelihood in
different coastal areas in the Philippines. Today,
about a million of farmers and entrepreneur benefit
from seaweed farming.

• DOLORES RAMIREZ • She has been working on the genetic systems


controlling the makapuno endosperm of coconut;
the genetics of chemical resistance factors against
Cercospora kex leaf spot; and the cytogenetics of
the hybrids of rice with related wild species.

• EDGARDO GOMEZ • Dr. Edgardo Gomez - is recognized for his


contributions in marine ecosystems, coral reef
ecology and conservation, reestablishment of giant
clam stocks, and marine science capability
enhancement.
• FABIAN MILLAR DAYRIT • Herbal medicine

• RAUL FABELLA • Raul Fabella , A Filipino scientist has made significant


contributions in the field of ecomics and mathematics. His
works primarily revolves around game theory, particularly in
the context of economics and sciences. His works has
provided valuable insight into dynamics of markets and
cooperation among regional agents. Fabella's contribution
have not only enriched academic literature but also
influenced policymaking and business strategies ,making
him a notable figure in the field of science.

• ANGEL CHUA ALACALA • Angel Chua Alcala was a Filipino biologist who was named
a National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014. Alcala is
known for his fieldwork to build sanctuaries and to promote
biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystems of the Philippines. He
was the Chairman of the Board of Advisers at the Angelo
King Center for Research and Environmental Management
located in Silliman University. Alcala published more than
200 peer-reviewed articles and books and his biological
contributions to the environment and ecosystems have made
him a renowned figure of natural sciences in the Philippines.
• GEMINIANO DE OCAMPO • NS de Ocampo was the leader and pioneer in the
modern Philippine ophthalmology. A maverick during
his time, he introduced corneal transplantation in the
Philippines and designed a corneal dissector which was
later manufactured by Storz and Co., USA

• PRISCILLANO M. ZAMORA • Prescillano M. Zamora was a filipino biologist who is


recognized for his contribution to plant anatomy
morphology, pteridophyte biology, and the conservation
of environment and natural resources Policy research.
His work on the xylem elements of vascular plants in the
basis for the formulation of the two phase wall
deposition concept now accepted universally. His basic
studies on ferm biology yielded five species of plants,
putting our Country on the map of world science.

• JUAN S. SALCEDO • Dr. Juan S. Salcedo( Nutrition and public health.


Conducted medical research to improve the health and
nutrition of Filipinos. He spent much of his lifetime
studying health factors ranging from fatty acid to
vitamins. He has published more than 200 articles on
medicine, science and technology all of which noted the
needs for proper utilization of science hand in hand with
technology in the process of shaping the nation.

• LILIAN PATEÑA • Lilian Pateña is a Filipino scientist who discovered a
breed of calamansi and seedless pomelo and discovered
micropropagation which established the banana industry
in the Philippines.

• RAMON BARBA • Is a Filipino Horticulturalist, recognized for his


significant contributions to Philippine agriculture
through horticulture. He developed a simple method for
inducing early flowering in mango plants. His work
found applications in advancing the mango export
industry. His research on tissue culture of many
horticultural crops, bananas, cassava and sugar cane
among others, enabled the development of
methodologies in physiology and plant breeding.

• FE DELMUNDO • Known For: Conducted studies that led to the invention


of an improved incubator and a device to treat jaundice.
She also founded a major children's hospital in the
Philippines and created the BRAT diet.
• CLAIRE BALATAZAR • Dr. Claire Baltazar is recognized for her contributions
on the research on Philippine insects. Her discovery of
the Philippine-endemic Hymenoptera species is
important for biological insect control applications. Dr.
Baltazar published a book on Philippine Insects is the
first reliable book on Philippine insects. Discoveries of 8
and one subgenus of Hymenoptera and 108 new species
of the Philippine parasitic Wasp's are Dr. Baltazar other
important contributions to Science. Dr. Baltazar is well
renowned here and out of the country. She accepted the
Rizal Pro Patria Award in Entomology in 1980.

• RAFAEL DINEROS GUERRERO III • He was recognized because of his scientific and
technical contributions to the growth of Sex Reversal
and Hatchery Techniques that help the commercial
fabrication of high yielding market-size tilapia in the
Philippines and other nations.

• EDUARDO QUISUMBING • A foremost botanist, Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing is pioneer


in the study of Philippine medicinal plants where he
made tremendous contribution. His book Medicinal
Plants in Philippines is the forerunner of all researches
on medicinal plants in the country. He was author of
more than 129 scientific articles published here and
abroad.
• JOSE ENCARNACION • In recognition of his contributions to economics, Dr.
Encarnacion is recepient of several awards
notably:Distinguished Scholar award from the University
of the Philippines(1968), Philippine’s Ten Outstanding
Young Men Award(1963) and Miguel Cuaderno Chair in
Political Economy,since 1969.

• MERCEDES B. CONCEPCION • Extensive research on population such trends and its


implication on social development and economic growth.
Research on urbanization, family planning, the elderly and
aging

• ERNESTO DOMINGO • Recognized for his groundbreaking studies with the


schistosoma species, viral hepatitis, and liver disease. His
research led to pioneering a preventive solution to liver
cancer via immunization of newborns against hepatitis-B.
His work finds applications in health care and immunology.
• BENITO VERGARA • Benito Vergara -popularized the scientific basis of growing
rice. He is the mind behind the creation of the IRRI Rice
World and the philippine Science Heritage Center, two
science centers that instill science-oriented culture among
the public.He believes that his greatest contributions to
science are his researches on rice, his numerous graduate
students, his book on Farmer's Primer on Growing Rice,
which has been translated into more than 40 languages, and
his development of the Riceworld Museum and now the
Philippine Science Heritage Center.

• FRANCISCO QUISUMBING • Filipino botanist who claims to be the inventor of Quink


ink in 1930 used by The Parker Pen Company..

• CLARA LIM SYLIANCO • A Filipino scientist known on her works on mutagens, anti-
mutagens, bio-inorganic mechanisms and Carcinogenic
chemicals found in various fruits and vegetables. She also
authored schoolbooks that are still makes use in schools
nowadays. She has more than 50 scientific articles, 7 books
and 5 monographs to her name.Her books are used as
textbooks in college chemistry courses in many schools
throughout the country. Her research was primarily focused
around the chemicals found in fruits and vegetables. Her
findings led to the popularization of the ‘Coconut Oil’ diet.
• JOSE R. VELASCO • Dr. Velasco's pioneering and promising works in various areas of
plant physiology such as mineral nutrition, photoperiodism,
chemical weed control and plant growth in general, have
provided the basis of some important crop production
management practices as well as laid out research directions.

• HILARIO LARA • Lara began the first of many studies on the diagnosis, treatment,
and prevention of not one, but five infectious diseases. His
research on cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, measles, and
diphtheria proved to be invaluable in determining what caused
them and how to control their spread.

• JULIAN ARCA BANZON • Filipino biochemist and national a scientists of the Philippines.
Banzon is credited for research in alternative fuel. He researched

• Teodoro A. Agoncillo was not primarily known as a Filipino
scientist but rather as a historian and scholar. He made significant
contributions to the field of Philippine history, particularly in the
study of the country's struggle for independence from Spanish
colonial rule. Agoncillo's most notable work is the book "Revolt
of the Masses," which provides a detailed account of the
Philippine Revolution against Spain.
