Characteristics

Shrub, perennial (sometmes short-lived), 1 - 3 (- 5) m high. Stem erect to 3 cm diameter, lenticels abundant; lateral
branches ascending, tending to become woody near the main stem; immature branches densely or sparsely covered
with short white hairs, inconspicuous among stiff uncinate (hooked) hairs. Leaves pinnately trifoliolate; petiole to (1 -)
1.5 - 4.5(-6) cm long; leaflets densely and softly pilose on both sides, round, ovoid or broadly elliptic, rounded or obtuse
at apex, 3 - 9 cm long, 2.5 - 8 cm wide, terminal leaflet sub-mucronate, larger than laterals; lateral leaflets almost sessile,
terminal petiolule to about 2 cm; stipules triangular-ovate, attenuate, to about 3 - 8 mm long, hairy on both surfaces,
deciduous. Inflorescence terminal or axillary panicle 8 -25(- 50) cm long, comprising closely-packed, many-flowered
racemes, 10 - 20 cm long. Flowers 6.5 to 7 mm long, purple or rose, in groups of 3 - 5 on pedicels 3- 5 mm long, calyx
tube 1 mm long, adaxially hirsute. Pod (loment), 1.5 - 3 cm long, comprising 4 - 8 segments (articles), 4.5 - 7 mm long,
3.5 - 5 mm wide, finely pubescent, oblong, unequally constricted between segments (notched more deeply below);
stipe 1 - 2 mm long. Seeds reniform (kidney-shaped), flattened, yellow-brown to brown, 4 - 6 mm long and 3 mm broad.
About 500,000 seeds/kg.

Nutritive Value

Desmodium rensonii is used most often as a fodder tree in a system of hedgerows and alley cropping. As a legume, it
produces nitrogen-rich foliage (crude protein- 20-22%), that is fed to goats, cattle, sheep, rabbits, pigs and guinea pigs,
as well as serving as mulch and green manure.

Characteristics

Mani-manian is a prostrate, stoloniferous, perennial tropical legume, growing about 8 inches high. Stems grow along the
ground and root at the nodes. Leaflets are oval, four on each petiole. Flowers are yellow, borne on short axillary
racemes. Flower stalks elongate and grow down into the soil. Fruit is a terminal one-seeded underground pod, light
brown, 1 to 1.5 centimeters long, 6 to 8 millimeters in diameter.

Nutritive Value

Leaf consists of 60-70% dry matter digestibility, 13-25% crude protein, and low levels of condensed tannins. - As forage,
yields high nutritional value with 13.

Characteristics

This plant is a shrub or tree growing up to 5 meters tall, though a 15-meter specimen was reported once. It often
produces aerial roots. The oval or oblong leaves are up to 26 centimeters long by 14 wide and are borne on short
petioles. The flower is maroon with a yellow throat.

Nutritive Value

On a dry matter basis, the MdA leaves that were used contained 18.07% ash, 15.80% crude protein, 1.15% crude fat,
15.42% crude fiber, 4.70% calcium and 0.32% total phosphorus. It has 6.35% digestible crude protein, 8.90% digestible
ash, and 1668 kcal DE/kg.

Characteristics

Cassava is a shrubby perennial that grows to a height of 6–8 feet. It has smooth erect stems and resembles the cannabis
plant in appearance. The large compound, dark green, reddish veined leaves are palmately divided into about seven
leaflets.

Cassava is a calorie-rich vegetable that contains plenty of carbohydrates and key vitamins and minerals. Cassava is a
good source of vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. The leaves, which are also edible if a person cooks them or
dries them in the sun, can contain up to 25% protein.
