To: Sara Hassan

Subject: Some news

Hi Sara,

How are you? We’ve moved! Our new apartment has more space than our
old one did, and I’m glad that I don’t have to share a room with my baby
brother anymore. Also, Mum says we can get a cat, but I need to give it
food and water every day. That’s no problem!

School starts at 8 am and most mornings Dad drives me there. I prefer to

arrive before lessons start. If I’m late, I have to wait until the lunch break to
have a conversation with my friends.

You asked about my cousin Harry. I like him because he always makes me
laugh! He has a job making bread and cakes! I love eating them – I’m sure
you would, too!

See you soon,

Ben

4 Read the email and answer the questions.

To: Jordan Shakir

Subject: Hello!

Hi Jordan,

In your last email, you told me about a rock concert you’re going to during
the school holidays. I’ve never heard of that band. Can you tell me where
they’re from? I hope you have a great time, and afterwards, please post
some photos! I wanted to get a ticket for a pop concert last year but it cost
too much. Maybe next year!

Over the next two weeks, I don’t have any plans, but I’ll be busy at the end
of summer. There’s an art festival in my town then. My aunt knows I love art,
so she always takes me to it. It’s on for five days, so sometimes we go twice.
My aunt prefers going before lunch as it’s less crowded. Lots of different
artists display their art, which you can look at and buy. It’s fun walking
around and looking at everything. I especially enjoy the paintings. Seeing
everything gives me ideas for art that I can do at home.

I’m really excited to start school again, although getting up early every day
won’t be easy, of course. I’ll be happy to return to the drama club, it’s really
important to me. There’s also a trip planned for the whole class to go to a
chocolate factory! Our teacher wants us to learn about how it’s made,
which will be interesting, but the best part will be eating some! I can’t wait.

Write back soon!

also a variety of restaurants, but most require reservations. If you’re driving, there’s no
charge for parking during the day.

My career playing guitar

by Jasmine Lieu

There was always music playing in my house when I was growing up. For my eighth birthday, I got
a trumpet, which I enjoyed playing. Then when I was ten, I picked up a guitar for the first time. It
belonged to my brother, but he never played it, so I did.

Soon after that, my parents found me a music teacher. He helped me really improve my technique.
Although some kids have to be told to practise their instruments, I definitely didn’t. In fact, my parents
were a little anxious because they thought I played guitar too much.

I decided to study music at college, and I even started a band during my three years there.
Unfortunately, there weren’t enough music rehearsal rooms, but we found a room above a restaurant
where we could go and not bother anyone with our playing. We spent many hours there.

Now I have a career as an independent guitarist, which means I do lots of different jobs in music.
I’ve played in live concerts and recording studios. I’ve worked with musicians from all over the world.
Of everything I’ve done, playing in the band on a TV talent show has been one of my favourites.
We played a huge variety of music and got to meet the performers and judges. I also particularly
enjoyed playing for a film about dinosaurs. The music was brilliant.

When I first started working, I had to look for adverts in magazines to find jobs but now everything’s
online, which is much easier. Despite working with famous people, I’m glad I’m not famous, because
I don’t get too much attention from the media. If anyone asks me about becoming an independent
musician, I always explain that I had singing lessons and they really helped. In the pop music
industry, we’re often asked to do bits of singing on recordings. Also, reply to job offers quickly, or you
might miss a great chance.

It’s a brilliant career.
