1.1.1 Electromotive force

1.1.2 Resistivity

1.1.3 Weber ▩
1.1.4 Permeability

1.1.5 Reluctance

1.2 A copper conductor and an aluminium conductor are connected in parallel and
carry a combined current of 250 A. The diameter of the copper conductor is
20 mm and it carries 80 A. The length of each conductor is 2,5 km,
and the resistivity of copper and aluminium may be taken as 0,017 and
0,028 micro-ohm metres respectively.

Without calculation, make 'd' the subject of the of the formula.

1.3 A generator of 100 V and a battery of 75 V with internal resistances of 0,4 Ω

and 0,3 Ω respectively are connected in parallel to supply a load of 35 Ω.

1.3.1 Use Norton's theorem to draw the fully labelled circuit diagram. (4)

1.4
1.3.2 Calculate the voltage drop across the 35-ohm resistor.

A straight conductor 50 cm long is moved at right angles to a magnetic field of
(9)

flux density 0,3 Wb/m² with a velocity of 8 m/s.

Calculate the following:

1.4.1 The magnitude of the emf induced in the conductor (2)

1.4.2 The force required to produce this movement if the ends of this
conductor are connected to a circuit drawing 600 mA (2)

6.2 The resistance of resistor Rx needs to be measured by means of a Wheatstone
bridge. Resistors R1 and R2 are connected to the positive terminals of the
battery. Variable resistor R3 and a resistor of unknown value R4 are connected
▩ to the negative terminal of the battery. With the galvanometer reading zero,
R1 = 80 Ω, R2 = 800 Ω and R3 = 500 Ω.

Use the information given above to draw the circuit diagram and determine the
value of an unknown resistor R4. (5)
