Biblical Worldview Integration:

The similarities between living things and their cells reveal the intelligence and
intentional design of our Creator. Genesis 1:20–25 illustrates God's deliberate
creation of a variety of life forms, each able to procreate similarly to itself. As
demonstrated in Psalm 139:14, the complex arrangements and operations that
make up cells attest to God's magnificent artistry. The interconnection of God's
creation is emphasized by the fact that life, despite its diversity, points to the
shared origin and interdependence of all living things. Since cells are the
fundamental units of life and enable the vital processes of growth, repair, and
reproduction, their presence in living organisms also emphasizes how detailed
God's handiwork is.

Time allocated: 2 x 40”
CA-Microscopy-Lab Work (Practical
Assessment)

Learning Objectives:
 describe cell structures, including the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall,
mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes and vacuole using a microscope

Instructional Methods:
 Discuss how to use a microscope
 Use microscopes to observe and draw onion epidermis cells, human cheek cells
and pondweed leaf cells.
 The onion cells should be stained with iodine solution to see nuclei and cell
membranes.
 Cheek cells should be stained with a small amount of methylene blue solution,
drawn under the coverslip with filter paper.
 Pondweed (e.g. Elodea) cells or moss leaf cells do not need staining and students
should be able to observe the chloroplasts.
 Students should draw a few cells of each tissue type and compare the animal and
plant cells..

Evaluation of Learning:
 Q and A
 Laboratory Sheet

Cell Reproduction and
Differentiation

Learning Objectives:
● discuss how the cells reproduce
● explain the importance of cell differentiation in the development of
specialized cells
 understand the advantages and disadvantages of using stem cells in
medicine

Instructional Methods:
 Review: Let the students recall the differences and similarities of plant and
animal cells.
 To understand cell differentiation, students can be given diagrams of a range of
cells (e.g. egg, sperm, xylem, palisade, root hair, motor neurone, red blood) and
asked to explain the function of each and how it is adapted.
 Group Work: Students can research the role of stem cells in medicine and produce
a leaflet or poster explaining their findings.
