Sun City Festival Hosts The USAPA National Pickleball Tournament

Sun City Festival is once again hosting the U.S. Pickleball Associations National Tournament. Tournament play starts on Monday, November 7 and continues through Sunday, November 13. Play begins at 8:00 AM and concludes with the medal matches each day. Over four hundred enthusiastic athletes from across the country and Canada will play on our courts in this years tournament. Pickleball is said to be the fastest growing sport in the nation! Our own Pickleball Club has volunteered to assist in putting on the tournament. Many Sun City Festival members will be participating in the tournament, so come join us in watching some of the best players in the United States as they compete for their medals of honor (Gold, Silver and Bronze).

Veterans Day Commemoration Friday, November 11 3:00 PM

Join us as we honor our Veterans at a commemoration to be held at the Sage Center entrance on Friday, November 11 at 3:00 PM. Coffee, cake and ice cream will be served in Celebration Hall following the ceremony.

The New And Improved Three-Day Guest Pass

The Board of Directors has approved a modification to the Guest Pass Policy which will allow residents to purchase a three-day guest pass for their visiting friends and relatives, and enable them to utilize the three guest visits to the Sage Center over a period of seven days. Under the previous policy, a three-day guest pass expired three days from the date of purchase, requiring a visitor to utilize the pass during three consecutive days. The new policy will allow more flexibility for the guests of our residents and goes into effect November 1, 2011. Guest passes may be purchased at the Fitness Check-In Desk.

RESIDENT PROFILE
... they have met many new friends and really enjoy the lifestyle that Sun City Festival has offered.

Barbara and Tom Flanagan

Barb and Tom moved to Sun City Festival in October 2008 as snow birds but by summer 2009 realized they wanted a full time residence here in this community. Both Tom and Barb grew up in Maryland and in 1983 moved, due to work, to Carmel, Indiana where they raised both of their children. They have a daughter who lives in Chicago, Illinois and a son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren who live in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were married in September 1969 and celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. Tom is a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from IBM. Barb was a stay at home mother during the early years, and later worked as an orthodontic assistant for 25 years once the children reached school age. Here in Festival they enjoy many of the great activities that are provided. Tom plays with the Mens Golf Group, is a member of the SCF Car Club, participates in pickleball, softball and recently joined the poker group on Thursday nights. Barb enjoys exercise classes and is a member of the Pottery and Pickleball Clubs. Since moving to Festival they have met many new friends and really enjoy the lifestyle that Sun City Festival has offered. Their future plans are to keep healthy, maintain a high level of activity and keep a travel schedule that will allow them to see many parts of the world over the next 20 years.

Group Exercise - Step into the Action!

Group exercise is a great way
to add fun and camaraderie to your exercise routine. A variety of group exercise classes are available most days of the week to meet all fitness needs. Participating in a group class can be much more fun and motivating than solo exercise. No special skills are needed and classes are geared toward participants of all skill levels. A group exercise class will add variety to a current exercise schedule and can increase the intensity just when you need it. Each class is led by a certified instructor and requires a fee. A complete list of classes with days and times is available on the Sun City Festival community web portal, www. oursuncityfestival.net; Cox Channel 22; or at the Sage Center Fitness check-in desk.

Available Classes Include:

AQUA AEROBICS: Aerobic pool exercise is especially helpful for those with skeletal and joint limitations. The water provides resistance in every direction of movement and helps minimize stress on the joints. PILATES: Pilates is gentle to the body yet physically challenging with no experience needed. A series of exercises is done on a floor mat which focuses on the powerhouse of the body, also referred to as the abdominal and back muscles, while coordinating breathing patterns. This method is designed to stretch and strengthen muscles without putting stress on joints and ligaments. CARDIO COMBO: A heart-pumping, calorie-burning class with a mixture of everything, this class includes low-impact aerobics, box aerobics, and even cardio with the ball. If youve never done any of these, dont be shy. The moves are easy to learn with intensity options to make the class perfect for everyone. Each class ends with a thorough stretch to help increase flexibility. ZUMBA & ZUMBA GOLD: Ditch the workout and come join the party. This is a cardio-interval dance exercise class using Latin rhythms like the Cha-Cha-Cha, Cumbia, Meringue, Salsa and Reggae. Beginners are welcome, the focus is on fun and movement. Zumba Gold is the same as Zumba just a little slower and easier on the body. Its designed for people who have not exercised recently or have some limitations. GROUP CYCLING: A high-energy workout in a group setting on stationary bikes.
