Captain's Standing Orders
Chief Engineer RESPONSIBILITY The chief engineer reports directly to the Captain. The Chief Engineer is second in command on-board the yacht but will work together with the Chief Officer when the Captain is absent. In the eventuality that the Captain is incapacitated or lost, the overall responsibility of the yacht will be taken over by the Chief Engineer along with the Chief Officer with regards to navigation and safety. The Chief Engineer should not become too much involved in crew issues unless it is deemed necessary. JOB DESCRIPTION The chief engineer’s area of responsibility shall include but not be limited to: The chief engineer is responsible for the organisation and management of the engineering department. He is responsible for the conduct and safety of the second engineer/deckhand while he/she is working in his department. The development of an engine room procedures manual with photographic instructions on all necessary engine room operations for watch-keeping. Ensure that the assistant engineer and all crew/watch- keepers are rehearsed in all necessary aspects in his engine-room while he is absent. Efficient operation and maintenance of all engine-room machinery and systems. Completing monthly planned maintenance items to keep equipment in service and preventing future problems. Maintaining engine-room logs and maintenance record in keeping with a uniform and organised manner. Ensuring that all class and statutory surveys are carried out and all documentation kept up to date. Maintaining spare parts and consumables inventories up to date. Ordering required spares and equipment and consumables after consultation with the captain. Corresponding promptly with Captain, equipment failures and problems which may affect the vessels safety. Preparation and planning of shipyard work list and specifications of job items so that contractors can quote accurately without possibility of exploitation. Responsible with the Chief Officer in the compliance with the SMS system on-board. Including planned and unplanned maintenance, Obs. defects and non- conformities Maintenance of the oily record book. Recording all movement of Fuel and lube oils aboard the ship. On-board and discharge. Prevention of pollution into the sea. The planning and practice of a contingency in the event of an oil spill. Maintenance and inspection of the oil spill kit and the instruction to other crew of what to do in an emergency. Cleanliness of the engine-room and machinery spaces. Regular inspection of tanks and void spaces. Keeping of engine-room watch whilst at sea along with the assistant engineer. Along with the Chief Stewardess, keeping an interior defect log and addressing interior problems such as repair of all Audio visual components in the accommodation areas. Light bulb and plumbing issues Assistance to the other departments aboard when required if there is no immediate requirement in the engine-room. (When we are on charter all crew are expected to help out each-other in times of pressure. Any concerns regarding safety and security on-board should be brought to the attention of the ships safety officer and they will in turn be brought up in the monthly safety meeting.
