LOLER
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
What does LOLER apply to?
LOLER applies to the use of lifting equipment provided as work
equipment.
What does LOLER Contain?
LOLER contains approved Code of Practice and guidance for those who
work with any lifting equipment provided at work or for the use of
om
people at work, those who employ such people, and those who act as a
competent person in the examination of lifting equipment.

C.E Marking
• CE marking is the symbol as shown on the top of this
page. The letters CE are the abbreviation of French
phrase “conformite’ Europeene” which literally means
European conformity.
• The term initially used was EC mark and it was officially
replaced by CE marking in the directive 93/68/EEC in 1993.
• CE marking is now used in all EU official documents

oi
• Web slings can be used for specialized lifts around the Rig as a last
resort but not to be used for picking up tubulars from the Cat walk
to the Rig floor.
• Any web sling used in a load-carrying capacity should be
protected from abrasion by padding when fastened or drawn over
square corners or sharp or rough surfaces.
• Web slings must be regularly inspected for damage.

Always
• Eyebolts should be loaded in the same plane as the eye.
• When lifting with a pair of eyebolts, use a two leg sling.
Never
• Use a sling in a basket format, as this can drastically overload the
eyebolts.
• Replace the bolt with a standard bolt as the assembly would likely
fail thereafter.
• Reeve slings through eye bolts or hoist rings.

Pre-use Examination
• Examine sheaves for wear in the rope groove, cracks or distortion.
• Ensure all grease ports are clean and unblocked and the machine
is well lubricated.
• Examine swivel head fittings and check for wear / stretch.
• Examine (if possible) thrust bearing / washer and ensure
smoothness of operation.
• Examine upper load pin / spigots and check for wear / distortion.

• Ensure there are no sharp edges or burrs in the side plates which
may be detrimental to the wire rope.

• Using sheave gauge, check rope groove for compatibility with
which rope.

Types of Lift:
Routine lifts
Simple (Non-Routine lifts)
Complicated (Non-Routine lifts)
Complex (Non-Routine lifts)
Risk Assessment:
• If there are changes to original plan, a further risk assessment
must be undertaken.
Supervision:
• By appointed lift controller who also allocates duties to others.
Risk Assessment:
• A basic risk assessment must be undertaken but need not be
recorded.
Supervision:
• By operator actually performing the work.
Risk Assessment:
• A Risk Assessment must be undertaken and controlling measures
recorded.
