ANNEX
1. Revision points at this time
(1) Olive chromate which had not been previously revised was changed to hexavalent chromium free specification that
satisfies the ELV regulation in Europe.
However, since one standardized substitute material could not be developed, it was decided that a supplier shall
select a substitute material that conforms to the surface treatment specifications prescribed in NES D2110 (Speci-
fications for Bolt).
In addition, similar to the previous revision, the specification was changed without changing the part numbers
(codes).

New specification High corrosion resistant hexavalent chromium free black
(Free from hexavalent chromium) electroplating
Conventional specification Olive chromate (Electro-zinc plating)
(Containing hexavalent chromium) MFZn8G
Code 2A
(2) Normative References were added and updated.
2. History of establishment
This Standard was established in 1983 for the purpose of standardization and simplification, and it was established
based on the following concepts.
O Property class At the time the Standard was established, property classes 4T and partially 7T (medium carbon
steel) were in use, however because weldability cannot be ensured with 7T, it was decided to first create the
Standard for 4T only.
O Shapes and dimensions The shape and dimensions of the head, including welding projections, were specified with
reference to JIS (JASO) for sizes M6 and smaller, and with reference to DIN for sizes M8 and larger.
O Weld point projection A variety of shapes were used, including simple circles (3-point, 4-point), ribbon shapes, and
ring shapes (for seal properties), however in order to identify a standard shape, JIS (3-point circle shape) was
adopted for sizes M6 and smaller. For sizes M8 and larger, consideration was based on the requirement that a
certain level of welding strength must be ensured, and therefore the successful DIN specifications (3-point ribbon
shape) were adopted.
O Head diameter For sizes M6 and smaller, the head size was set at 2d + 2 mm (d: Nominal diameter). For sizes M8
and larger, because of space restrictions and based on previous performance, the head size was set at 2d.
O Threaded end Both the unpointed end and pilot point were in use, however the Standard was restricted to the pilot
point.
O Surface treatment Zinc plating and Zinc Chromate Organic Coating were specified so that they can be indicated as
necessary.
3. Revision history
(1) Revision in 1993
At this revision, the following changes were made in order to reduce the number of part types, improve productivity,
and rationalize specifications.
O The Standard has been divided into two parts: text and APPENDIX, in order to clearly distinguish recommended
parts from unrecommended parts in accordance with the policy of reducing the number of part types. In APPENDIX,
it has been described that “This APPENDIX shall not be applied to new designs” as unrecommended parts. The
APPENDIX explains that it would be abolished in 1996.
O Because the surface treatment has a large effect on weldability, in principle, “plating shall not be performed”. How-
ever for cases when it is unavoidable, surface treatment was limited to “colored chromate zinc plating”.
O Previously a pilot point was specified for the tip shape of this part. However, in keeping with recent trends, a larger
integrated-type pilot point was listed as a recommended product for the future.
However, a conventional pilot end is still specified for size M5, in the same way as for machine screws.
Recently, low-carbon boron steel has become widely used for bolts. As a result, it became possible to specify 7T
class bolts with excellent weldability. However because there was as yet little result of use, they were not incorpo-
rated into NES at this time.
(2) Revision in 1996
O “A 12 mm length bolt”, which had been requested, was added to nominal size M8 in this Standard.
O Because the provisions in the APPENDIX were to be abolished in 1996, all parts that are not actually used have
been deleted based on the results of a survey conducted to determine how often they are currently released and
orders for them are placed.
As a result, the number of part types specified in the APPENDIX has been reduced from 94 to 44 at this revision.
O Because the distribution of length is not equal for each nominal size, the part numbers were indicated for all lines in
the APPEDIX table.
O Along with establishment of NES M 0301 (Substance Use Restrictions), the note that NES M 0301 must be con-
formed to was added.
(3) Revision in 2002
O Based on the results of a survey of flowing status including application status and service conducted to determine in
the APPENDIX are placed by design departments, four types that were not applied at current point, and actually
not used has been deleted and the number of types has been reduced from 44 to 40 at this revision.
O There were requests from plants to improve positional accuracy by changing from the current effective diameter
weld bolts to nominal diameter weld bolts. However, this was not done in NES at this time because of the poorer
conditions resulting from a longer incomplete thread section and because of unfavorable materials costs.

D2126 [2006-N]
(4) Revision in 2005
O Since the use of hexavalent chromium will be prohibited by ELV regulations from July 2007 for all vehi-
cles in Europe, and by the voluntary agreement of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association
from January 2008 for new vehicle models in Japan, Nissan decided to prohibit the use of it from
January 2007 for all European models and from July 2007 for new models for all other destinations
outside Europe. Therefore, the surface treatment was changed as follows. Because it was confirmed
that the corrosion resistance and the tightening characteristics were equivalent to the conventional
specification, the surface treatment specification was changed without changing the part numbers
(codes). For olive chromate treatment, however, no changes have been made this time because the
development of substitute materials has not yet been completed.
