Transverse Design of Box
Design of box section in the transverse direction is carried out as a reinforced concrete elements. The
load effects obtained from the local analysis are considered for design.
Local load effects are obtained from the analysis of the box section as a plane frame. Spring supports
are considered at the bottom of the webs. The idealised frame of the box section is as shown in the next
pages
For transverse design of the box, 1.0m width of the box section is considered. Hence load effects for
1.0m width should be calculated. The local wheel load effects for HL-93 loading is considered to act on
the effective width calculated below:

But the spacing of the axles is 1.80 m which is less than the value calculated above
Hence, be = 1.8 m

This spreadsheet is used to create LEAP5-Classic input file for the transverse analysis of box girder decks. In
addition it reads the results and performs a complete design at SLS and ULS for selected sections. Analysis and
design are in accordance with AASHTO LRFD-2004.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
● Only blue font cells are input cells.
● All black font cells are formulae or fixed data cells.
● Live load placement is to be edited manually using input file of LEAP5 classic.
LIMITATIONS:
● Maximum 5 cells only.
● No cross fall is considered in the current version
Sheet: Transverse
● Section information is entered in this sheet under 'Input'.
● Value of the spring support constant should be calculated from grillage model by applying a unit load to the web
and dividing it by the corresponding deflection. This should be modified in Leap input file under each web.
● Press "Create Leap5 Input File & Save this File" button to create the leap5 input file for 2D plane frame model of
the transverse deck section, which gives all the geometry, section properties, applied loadings, etc.
● run the leap5 file to analyse the model and solve for all load case and create urfss file for the member end forces
of all the members.
Sheet: Temp
● This sheet calculates the temperature difference loading, which is used in leap5 input file.
Sheet: urfss
● copy into this sheet the full urfss file that includes all the output results of member end force.
● If you are using unprotected sheet, do not insert or delete rows in this sheet (i.e.
Transverse Box sheet).
