1. Based on the information provided on the table, which of the following objects will float? (the
density of water = 1 g/mL) Explain your answers.
Answer:
The density of pine wood is 0.35-0.50 g/mL. It is lower the density of water (1 g/mL).
Low density substance on top of high density substance. Therefore, pine wood will float
in water for the reason that its density is less than the waters density.
2. You want to make a marinade that contains soy sauce, water and other various ingredients.
There are 71.94 g in 60 mL of soy sauce. Will the soy sauce float or sink in water? (density of
water is 1 g/mL). Explain your answers.
Answer:
Given: 71. 94 g in 60 mL of soy sauce.
To find: Soya sauce float on water or not?
Solution:
mass
Density of soya sauce=
Volume
71.94 g
= 60 mL
= 1. 199 g/mL
Density of water= 1 g/mL
Density of soya sauce greater than water. Hence, soya sauce will float over water.
3. Which of the following will float in water? The density of water is 1 g/mL. Verify your answer.
Object 1: m = 5 g, and v = 2 mL Object 2: m = 3 g, and v = 4 mL
Object 3: m = 3 g, and v = 1 mL Object 4: m = 4 g, and v = 3 mL
Answer:
To float object in water its density should be less than water.
Formula:
mass
Density:
volume
Object 1:
5
Density:
2
= 2. 5 g/mL
Object 2:
3
Density:
4
= 0. 75 g/mL
Object 3:
3
Density:
1
= 3 g/mL
Object 4:
4
Density:
3
= 1.33 g/mL
Therefore, object 2 will float in water because its density is less than water.

1. You have a rock with a volume of 15cm3 and a mass of 45 g. What is its density?
Answers:
Given: volume of rock = 15 cm3
Mass of the rock = 45 g
To find: Density of the rock
Formula:
mass
Density =
volume
45 g
= 3
15 cm
= 3 g/cm3
Thus, rocks density is 3 g/cm3.
2. You have a different rock with a volume of 30cm3 and a mass of 60g. What is its density?
Answers:
Given: volume of rock = 30 cm3
Mass of the rock = 60 g
To find: Density of the rock
Formula:
mass
Density =
volume
60 g
= 3
30 cm
= 2 g/m3
Hence, rocks density is 2 g/cm3.
3. In the above two examples (No. 1 & 2) which rock is heavier? Which is lighter?
Answers:
Rock No. 2 is more heavier.
Rock No. 1 is one that is lighter.
4. In the above two examples (No. 1 & 2) which rock is denser? Which is less dense?
Answers:
Rock No. 1 is more denser.
Rock No. 2 is one that is less dense.
5. You decide you want to carry a boulder home from the beach. It is 30 centimeters on each
side, and so has a volume of 27,000 cm 3. It is made of granite, which has a typical density of
2.8 g/cm3. How much will this boulder weigh?
Answers:
Given: side = 30 cm
Volume = 27,000
Density = 2.8 g/cm 3
Formula:
Mass of boulder = density x volume
Solution:
M = p (density) x v
= 2.8 x 27, 000
= 75 600 g
Hence, mass of boulder is 75 600 g.
6. Rocks are sometimes used along coasts to prevent erosion. If a rock needs to weigh 2,000
kilograms (about 2 tons) in order not to be shifted by waves, how big (what volume) does it need
to be? You are using basalt, which has a typical density of 3200 kg/m3
Answers:
Given: Weight of rocks = 2,000 kg (2 tons)
Typical density of basalt = 3200 kg/m 3
Density formula:
mass
P (Density) =
volume
Thus, to find volume formula conversion takes place
mass
Volume =
p (density )
2000 kg
= 3200 kg/m
3
= 0.625 m3
Therefore, the volume of waves to be shifted is 0. 625 m3.
7. A golden-colored cube is handed to you. The person wants you to buy it for $100, saying that
is a gold nugget. You pull out your old geology text and look up gold in the mineral table, and
read that its density is 19.3 g/cm 3. You measure the cube and find that it is 2 cm on each side,
and weighs 40 g. What is its density? Is it gold? Should you buy it?
Answers:
Given: Density of the golden colored cube= 19.3 g/cm 3
Weight of the cube = 40 g
Side(volume) of the cube = 2 cm
Solution: volume of cube = 2 x 2 x 2
= 8 cm 3
Weight of cube = 40 g
Thus, to find the density of the cube
mass
Density of cube =
volume
40 g
= 3
8 cm
= 5 g/km3
Since, the density of gold is 19.3 g/cm3. So cube is not gold. And I will not buy it.
8. You have a sample of granite with density 2.8 g/cm 3. The density of water is 1.0 g/cm3. What
is the specific gravity of your granite?
Answers:
Given: Density of granite = 2.8 g/cm 3
Density of water = 1.0 g/cm 3
To find: Specific gravity of granite
Formula:
p sample
Specific gravity =
p H2 O
Solution:
3
2.8 g /cm
Specific gravity = 3
1 g /cm
= 2.8 g/cm3
Therefore, the specific gravity of granite is 2.8 g/cm3.
9. You have a sample of granite with density 174.8 lbs/ft 3. The density of water is 62.4 lbs/ft 3 .
What is the specific gravity of the granite now?
Answers:
Given: Density of granite = 174. 8 lbs/ft 3

Formula:
p sample
Specific gravity =
p H2 O
Solution:
3
174.8lbs /ft
Specific gravity = 3
62. 4 lbs/ft
= 2.80 lbs/ft3
Thus, the specific gravity of the granite is about 2.80 lbs/ft 3.
10. You make a cake that has a mass of 300 grams and fits in a cake pan that is 30 by 10 by
6.0 centimeters cubed. What is the density of the cake?
Answers:
Given: Mass of the cake = 300 g
Length of the cake pan = 30 cm
Width of a cake pan = 10 cm
Height of a cake pan = 6.0 cm
Solution:
Volume of the cake pan = l x b x h
= 30 x 10 x 6
= 1800 cm 3
mass of cake
Density of the cake =
volume of cake pan
300 g
= 1800 cm
3
= 0.167 g/cm3
Hence, the density of the cake is 0. 167 g/cm3.
11. A box of cough drops has a mass of 1.0 gram, and its dimensions are 1.0 by 5.0 by 8.5
centimeters cubed. It contains 30 cough drops, each of which has a mass of 2.2 grams. What is
the density of the box when it is full of cough drops?
Answers:
Given: Mass of cough drops: 1.0 g
30 g
2.2 g
Volume: 1.0 cm 3
5.0 cm 3
8.5 cm 3
Solution:
The total mass is 1.0 + 30 x 2.2 = 67 g
The volume is 1.0 x 5.0 x 8.5 = 42.5 cm 3
mass
So, the density is
volume
67 g
= 42.5 cm
3
= 1.576 g/cm3
Hence, the density of the box when it is full of cough drops is 1.576 g/cm3.
