READING BIOLOGY 1ºB

Plant and humans as

organisms Unit 1
ACTIVITY

1- Imagine you are an astronaut and you’re watching the Earth from the Moon:
- Why do you think planet Earth has different shades of green on its surface?
Take into account that most of the parts of the surface will look blue because of the water.

We think that the earth has different shades of green to the type of vegetation and the place where it
grows.
2- Why do you think there are not many plants on the places in which the surface is not green?

We believe that there are not many plants on surfaces that are not green because the soil is not
fertile, because it does not rain or because it does not have enough nutrients.
3- Think about the places in which you would find dense vegetation near your home. Name
at least 3 places and what would be possible to find in those places

Santa Catalina Municipal Natural Reserve: This complex is characterized by grassland as the
predominant natural vegetation, with few native woody formations. This complex covers the
entire Lomas de Zamora district, including the neighboring Santa Catalina Provincial Reserve.
The vegetation is characterized by the presence of remnants of clearings and in the sectors
adjacent to the Station with introduced species; also remnants of hydrophilic communities of
Carquejillas, Carguatá and Yerba barbuda; grasslands and/or shrublands developed under
eucalyptus and sectors with ruderal vegetation, where native species are associated with
spontaneous cosmopolitan plants.

Vicente López Ecological Reserve:It is small but stands out for its biodiversity; carries out
important conservation and environmental education tasks. There are 3.5 hectares that protect the
native flora and fauna of the La Plata riverbank.
It is in La Lucila, in Paraná and the river. Entrance is free and open. There are no public
bathrooms.
There are 800 meters of trails that run through all the environments of the reserve, including the
lagoon with its floating vegetation, the willow forest and a swamp. You can walk, watch the
birds, and you can even see turtles in the lagoon.

Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve: It is the green space with the greatest biodiversity in the
city. It was declared an “Important Area for Bird Conservation” in 2005 by the organizations
BirdLife International and Aves Argentinas. There are 350 hectares that protect more than 350
species of birds, amphibians, mammals and reptiles that inhabit the lagoons, swamps, alder
forests and clearings of the reserve.
It is in the city of Buenos Aires, in Puerto Madero. Entrance is free and open. There are public
toilets at the entrance.
There are 10 kilometers of trails (all can be done with a stroller) that cover all the environments
of the reserve, including the lagoon with its floating vegetation, the willow forest and a swamp.
Many birds are seen: white herons, chajás, black-necked swans. And I have seen snakes and
nutria on several occasions. There are guided tours to observe wild birds and native plants.
ACTIVITY
4- Why do animals can live in a planet in which there are many plants?
Because animals depend on plants for food and oxygen

5- Why do you think roots branch out into the soil? – Give 2 reasons to it

We believe that roots branch because they seek to absorb water and bring nutrients to

the plant.

6- Suggest why many leaves are very broad and some others are thin.
What would it be that help them to have a certain shape?
We believe that the more water a plant absorbs, the wider its leaves will be.
7- Choose 2 different plants at home or on the way at school. Take a picture of them, and pay
attention to their leaves. Upload the pictures of them and complete the table below
