STRUCTURE OF WATER
HYDROGEN
Water is an inorganic molecule that is the
most important compound in the body, in fact a normal
adult’s body weight is made up of 50% or more of
water. it is also a polar molecule

Covalent bonds are chemical bonds that are formed by

the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons by the outer
energy levels or shells of two atoms.

Polar molecule is a molecule in which one end of the

molecule is slightly positive, while the other end is
slightly negative.
OXYGEN
COVALENT BONDS
Very effective solvent – Able to dissolve or break
Apart many substances ELECTRONS

PROPERTIES OF WATER
HIGH SPECIFIC HEAT – Resist Temperature changes,
1.) Much energy needed to break water bonds
2.) Helps to maintain a constant body temperature

COHESION & ADHESION – Cohesion is a Polar water molecules that are attracted to other
polar water molecule and are forces responsible for surface tension. While adhesion Polar water
sticks to other molecules/substances other than itself.

POLAR - with partial positive charges on the hydrogens, a partial negative charge on the
oxygen, and a bent overall structure. This is because oxygen is more electronegative, meaning
that it is better than hydrogen at attracting electrons.

SURFACE TENSION - Water has a strong top layer, which allows things to float on top of it.
