CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND AND REVIEW OF

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Introduction

Many people in the current age have offered their own thoughts to help

shape our rapidly expanding civilization. The development of new products and

inventions is supported and assisted by human innovation. The researchers had

to identify the challenges faced by electricians in establishing whether

convenience outlets are energized or not. If it is working properly particularly if it is

already installed on the wall.

Electrical energy is essential to our daily lives, but it can be very

dangerous if not handled safely (L'Esperance 1997). In dealing with situations of

safe use of electricity, personal knowing about it is an important aspect that

everyone must consider in order to reduce electrical accidents such as

equipment damage, electric shock and fires some severe cases, death (Saba

et al. 2014, pp. 1-2). These related issues exist when: electrical faults or shorts

occur in specific areas (McGrath 2019). Some of these causes these include

excessive stress on electrical wiring and excessive electrical stress on circuits

commonly called overload. Fundamentally, certain circuits carry loads higher

than their designed limits (Thiele 2018; Gladstone 1986, p.4). This may be due to

the increased number of electrical loads supplied at the same time or in

2
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

conjunction with an increase in the power consumed bone or more of

these consumers at a specific circuit (Abdelmoumene & Bentarzi 2016, p.2).

Because of these existing problems, the researchers conducted a study entitled

“Convenience Outlet with Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator” that may help the

worker lessen the problem in determining the outlet’s functionality with the help of

the indicators included in the product.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the level of acceptability of Convenience

Outlet with Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator specifically, the study will sought to

answer the following questions.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. What is the level of acceptability of Convenience Outlet with Digital

Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator as perceived by the respondents in terms

of:

2.3 Usability

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of acceptability of Convenience

Outlet with Digital Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator as perceived by the

respondents in terms of durability, safety and usability when the

demographic profile of the respondents is considered?

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the level of acceptability of Convenience

Outlet with Digital Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator as perceived by the

respondents in terms of durability, safety and usability when the demographic

profile of the respondents is considered.

Significance of the study

This study is deemed beneficial to the following:

Students. Not all students can afford expensive materials or tools and

equipment that they needed in doing their job in the field. This product is made

for everyone to easily identify if the convenience outlet mounted is either

grounded, broken or connected to live wire as it has voltmeter indicator.

Electricians. It can help the electrician to lesser time identifying if the

convenience outlet mounted is functional in commercial and industrial

infrastructure.

Future Researchers. Our research can improve services and treatments, not just

for us, but for future generations. Help develop new tests for diagnoses,

treatments, and processes that will ultimately help us, our children and even

grandchildren.

Scope and Delimitation

The study aimed to determine the level of acceptability of Convenience

Outlet with Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator using three barangays as research

locale. At each barangay the researchers will select 20 respondents using a survey

questionnaire as a survey tool. Interviews will be asked to the respondents. First

barangay is Barangay Parada, which describes the profession of electrical

engineers and its problems. The second is Barangay Ugong, with 20 respondents

who have experience and knowledge of this electrical work. And finally, Barangay

Gen. T De Leon.

The research study will be conducted during the 1st semester S.Y. 2023-

2024. The research will be descriptive and experimental research.

Reviews of Related Literature

This portion of the chapter presents the related literature and studies both

from foreign and local sources after the thorough and in-depth search done by the

researchers. The studies presented were used as a basis for the creation of the
7
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE

study and development of the Convenience Outlet with Digital Voltmeter and

Ammeter.

Foreign Literature

According to Jim Dollard (2018), There are multiple types of outlets. Both

of these terms are tied to the definition of the general term “outlet,” which is defined

as a point on the wiring system at which current is taken to supply utilization

equipment. Where a branch circuit is hard-wired to utilization equipment, that

connection is by definition an outlet. All dishwashers in dwelling units require GFCI

protection without regard to how the dishwasher is supplied. This is a serious

safety issue. While the inspector may not have failed your jobs, if an injury or

fatality should occur due to end-of-life appliance failure or other reasons, the lack

of NEC compliance will be evident.

At present, individual households within a multi-family residential are at

susceptible to electrical accidents. As if in a blind spot, they cannot be covered

under electrical safety management. This paper presents issues about an

autonomous electrical safety management service which uses smart outlets to

ensure electrical safety for individual households. Risk factors surrounding

electrical incidents occurring in a mashup tech-based environment were analyzed

and a smart outlet equipped with a prediction technique was developed. In

addition to this, an autonomous electrical safety management service scenario

8
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

was developed to handle mechanical failures in autonomous electrical safety

devices which run on IoT-based smart outlets. By utilizing such an autonomous

electrical safety management service model, technology for electrical safety

security was developed for individual households or each residential unit in multi-

dwelling unit. The correlation among voltage, current, and zero phase current was

analyzed to identify the risk factors of electrical accidents and to predict accidents.

In order to detect arc faults, a new prediction technique was developed. The

technique is based on the mashup technology after analyzing waveform and FFT

derived from the correlation among voltage, current, and zero phase current

(Department of IT Applied System Engineering, Chonbuk National University,

Jeonju, Korea, 2021).

Foreign Study

The ammeter-voltmeter method is a general method for measuring

electrical resistances that is widely used in the introductory physics laboratory,

mostly for pedagogical reasons. Simultaneous readings of current (I) and voltage

(V) allow the calculation of electrical resistance (R) using Ohm's law: R = V/I. It is

implicitly assumed that electrical wire and contact resistances present in the

measuring circuit can be neglected. Two measuring configurations are usually

proposed, depending on the relative values of R and the internal resistances of

the ammeter and voltmeter. In this work, we highlight the deficiencies of this
9
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

standard approach and propose a modified ammeter-voltmeter method that can

be used with more generality and better performance (Da Silva, 2020).

Local Literature

Electrical energy is essential in daily lives but could be very dangerous if not treated

safely (Lesperance 1997). In addressing the situation on the safe use of electricity,

an individual’s knowledge regarding it is one essential aspect that everyone must

consider in order to lessen electrically inflicted accidents like equipment damaged,

electrical fire, electrical shock and in some serious cases, death (Saba et al. 2014,

p. 1-2). These related problems do exist when electrical fault or short circuit

happens on a specific area (McGrath 2019). Some of these causes include

excessive load on electrical wires or too much electrical load on the circuit, which

is generically termed as overload (Overload Protection n.d.). Basically, an overload

occurs when a certain electrical circuit carries a load heavier than the limit it was

designed for (Thiele 2018; Gladstone 1986, p.4). It can be due to increase in the

number of electrical loads fed simultaneously or also to the increase in electrical

power absorbed by one of more of these loads on a certain electrical circuit

(Abdelmoumene&Bentarzi2016, p.2). In some studies, overload frequently

happens because of consumers’ malpractice of extending the number of spaces

10
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

on a convenience outlet that is intended only for a specified number of connected

appliances (Vela, 2019).

Local Study

Buildings and houses are installed with electrical outlets where the plug of an

electrical appliance is inserted to receive the voltage from the electrical power

source. However, one of the major issues on electrical power is voltage

fluctuation (Lewis, 2018). Accordingly, abrupt voltage variations in the

electricity supply have adverse effects on connected appliances (Agarwal,

2017). Similarly, Manish et al. (2015) mentioned that the occurrence of overvoltage

and undervoltage may cause malfunction and failure in household

appliances. Dimitriadis (2015) added that when the appliance receives higher

energy, it will shorten the life of the circuit (Homeres, 2020).

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification, the important terms used in this study have
been defined. The following terms:

1. Ammeter

An instrument for measuring either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) electric

current, in amperes. An ammeter can measure a wide range of current

11
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

values because at high values only a small portion of the current is

directed through the meter mechanism; a shunt in parallel with the meter

carries the major portion.

2. Convenience Outlet

A receptacle in a wall or baseboard for connection to lamps or other

electrical appliances.

3. Durability

The ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage over time without losing

functionality.

4. Electrical current

The flow of electric charge through a conductor, such as a wire, in a circuit.

It is typically measured in amperes (amps) and represents the rate of flow

of electric charge past a given point in the circuit.

5. Electrical Load

The amount of power consumed by electrical devices connected to a circuit.

It is typically measured in watts or kilowatts.

6. Electrical resistance

The measure of opposition that a material or device offers to the flow of

electric current. It is determined by the material's properties and is typically

measured in ohms.
12
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

7. Functionality

Refers to the ability of a convenience outlet with ammeter to perform its

intended task effectively and efficiently, including features such as accurate

current measurement, reliable electrical connections, and user-friendly

operation.

8. Indicator

A device providing visual or auditory feedback about the status or condition

of a system or component.

9. Ohm's Law

States that the current flowing through a conductor between two points is

directly proportional to the voltage across the two points, and inversely

proportional to the resistance of the conductor. Mathematically, it is

expressed as I = \frac{V}{R}I= RV, where I is the current in amperes (A), V

is the voltage in volts (V), and R is the resistance in ohms (\OmegaΩ).

10. Overload

An overload in electrical terms occurs when the current flowing through a

circuit exceeds its designed capacity, potentially leading to overheating and

damage to the circuit or connected devices.

11. Power Consumption

13
VALENZUELA CITY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE
Kamagong St. Fortune Village VI Brgy. Parada Valenzuela City

The rate at which electrical energy is used by a device or system. It is

usually measured in watts or kilowatts and can vary depending on the

operation of the device.

12. Safety

Pertaining to the measures taken to ensure the secure and hazard-free

operation of convenience outlets with ammeters, encompassing aspects

such as insulation integrity, overload protection, and compliance with

electrical safety standards and regulations

13. Usability

The ease and effectiveness of use, ensuring tasks can be completed

efficiently with minimal difficulty.

14. Voltage

The "push" or "pressure" behind the flow of electricity in a circuit.

15. Voltmeter

Is also known as voltage meter is an instrument that measures the

voltage or potential difference among two points of an electronic or

electrical circuit. Usually, the voltmeter is used for Alternating Current

(AC) circuits or Direct Current (DC) circuits.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter consists of the research design, research locale, data

gathering procedure, materials, and method employed, and step-by-step

procedure for the Convenience Outlet with Voltmeter and Ammeter Indicator. This

chapter also discussed where the experimentation is conducted, the step-by-step

procedure, and the materials used.

Research Design

We, the researchers combined descriptive and experimental research to our

study. Descriptive research is described as a type of research that outlines the

traits of the population or issue under study. We employed experimental methods

in this study since our goal was to enable workers to complete their tasks quickly

and safely. As a result, we let them to utilize the product we had created to show

them how safe and comfortable it was. The experimental technique is a systematic

methodology in which the researcher controls and monitors any change in one or

more variables while manipulating other variables.

Research Locale

This study is conducted on three different barangays in Valenzuela City.

These barangays are Parada, Ugong and Gen. T De Leon.
