1 Introduction

1.1 Anywhere, any place

The Swiss-made Turbomach package capitalizes on over 30 years of experience in Gas
Turbine Generator Set packaging for the industrial and power utility sectors. Turbomach’s
packaging concept has proven to be accepted worldwide as user-friendly, customizable,
robust, easy to install and maintain, and highly adaptable to the most diverse site
conditions.
The following pictures show some examples of Turbomach installations in a wide variety of
climatic areas.

The design and the construction characteristics of Turbomach packages allow outdoor
installation in almost every geographic area.
Indoor installations are, of course, possible as well. For those, the small footprint (base
area) required is a great benefit in case of space limitations or building constraints.

1.2 Quick and easy site activities

The design makes the Turbomach industrial gas turbine generator set robust, easy to ship
and easy to install by employing a “plug and play” concept.
The very short generator set installation and commissioning times minimize interferences
with the customer's core business.
Since gas turbines have very few moving parts compared to other technologies - which
require oil to lubricate rotor, gearbox and generator bearings - oil does not physically
interact with the turbine’s hot gas paths. Therefore oil degradation and consumption are
negligible.

1-2
1 Introduction

Additionally, the employed Solar industrial gas turbines require one single type (mineral or
synthetic) of lubricating oil, which means that there is only one single oil circuit that is kept
compact and fits on-skid. Since gas turbines only emit a minimal amount of heat to be
dissipated, around 1% of fuel input, cooling water is not required: a forced-draft air to oil
heat exchanger with small fans is typically installed, which reduces parasitic electrical
loads. If cooling water is available on site, a water-to-oil heat exchanger can in any case be
installed instead of an air-to-oil cooler.
A Motor Control Center (MCC) that supplies power to internal AC and DC loads is placed
on the skid together with the control and safety system. All electrical and control
components are pre-wired in the factory, providing the customer with signal exchange
interfaces and just the following low-voltage power interfaces:
• low-voltage power interface for the MCC
• low-voltage power interface for the start-up motor(s)
All hydro-mechanical connections (mainly fuel and instrument air) are easily accessible and
are arranged along the same plane on one end of the skid for convenient interconnections
at the customer premises.

1-3
1 Introduction

Fig. 6: Single connections point

The electrical generator is provided with all necessary measuring equipment to ensure
proper synchronization to the local grid. The control system monitors frequency and voltage
variations in order to protect the gas turbine generator package in case of grid faults. Such
a system allows the gas turbine generator package to operate safely either parallel to the
grid or in island mode.
The “plug and play” concept is ensured by a strict quality test procedure which includes,
among several other tests:
• Performance test of all gas turbine engines in a hot condition in the Solar Turbine
workshop in San Diego prior to shipment to the Turbomach workshop
• Functional test and check in a cold condition of the entire package at the end of the
assembly process prior to shipment from the Turbomach facility to the installation site
As a result of such a high degree of design standardization, the customer can be provided
with all installation and connection requirements data within a short period of time, allowing
optimal planning for site preparation by the time the generator set reaches the installation
site.
Site preparation
The duration of all site activities is usually very short. Also the activities for preparation of
the site are very time-saving due to the following features of the Turbomach packages:
• High power density:
This is a technological benefit of gas turbines. When compared with most natural gas
power generation technologies, a gas turbine package will require less room per
installed MWe, both in terms of surface and in terms of weight. This particular
advantage allows to minimize the necessary on-site civil works, i.e., a simple 300 to

1-4
1 Introduction

800 mm thick concrete slab is enough to sustain the static and dynamic loads, while
facilitating and speeding up transportation of the gas turbine packages even to the most
remote locations.
• Spring-mounted design:
The “Single-Lift” Turbomach package boasts the advantages of being free-standing,
and spring-mounted. Such a solution allows, in addition to the above mentioned lean
foundations, quick and easy installation and alignment of the package while enabling
the dampening of vibrations transmitted from the package to the ground and vice versa.
• Single point connections:
The standardization of fuel and other utility connections allows for advance planning,
construction and installation of the supply lines prior to package erection.

Fig. 7: Installation of a Centaur 50 package on its spring dampers

On-site installation
Installation on site is very fast: Once the package containing the core equipment (i.e., gas
turbine, generator, fuel, oil and auxiliary systems) is installed, the top-module erection
starts. The top-module is basically composed of two main elements: the filter house and the
lube-oil air cooler. The filter house includes turbine combustion air and package ventilation
air filtration systems.

1.3 Customizaton, upgrades and retrofits

In order to meet the customer requirements in an optimal fashion, the Turbomach gas
turbine generator set can be customized according to two main characteristics, namely fuel
flexibility and combustion air filtration. Solar industrial gas turbines are able to burn a wide
range of fuels, from low calorific value landfill gases to heavier natural gases. Specific fuel
injectors or fuel treatment systems might be necessary according to fuel composition and
Turbomach can provide basic specifications to design fuel treatment systems.
In some cases, when gaseous fuel supply is intermittent, the gas turbine fuel system can be
adapted to burn backup liquid fuels such as kerosene or diesel #2. Such a system, called
Dual Fuel (DF) combustion system allows, within few seconds, to switch on-load from
gaseous fuel combustion to liquid fuel combustion and vice versa. The fuel switching
process is smooth, automatic and does not impact customer operations.
Unlike other technologies, gas turbine DF technology does not require liquid fuel pilot
ignition when burning gas. It is able to burn selectively gaseous fuels or only liquid fuels.
Triple-fuel systems, by adding a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) combustion system, are
also available for special needs.
The combustion system can also be adapted for low NOx emissions (dry or by means of
water injection). Customers may choose this feature from the very beginning of the project
or may upgrade the system at a later stage, typically when a turbine overhaul is performed.

1-6
1 Introduction

Given the wide range of environments where our generator packages can be installed,
Turbomach has developed a fully customizable, modular air filtration system that allows the
gas turbine to run continuously in the most extreme ambient conditions, from the Saharan
desert to North-Sea coastal areas.
Configurations can vary from a simple regular double-stage static filtration, which suits
typical continental areas, to a more complex system made of desert-coastal pulse-cleaning
pre-filtration stage and secondary salt removal filtration stage with a downstream cooling
water coil for combustion air cooling.
Combustion air cooling is a common practice that greatly improves the performance of gas
turbines in hot ambient conditions.
Turbomach has a wide experience with combustion air cooling systems both with cold
water to air heat exchangers and evaporative coolers.
Anti-icing devices can also be installed in an environment where the filtering elements
might ice over.

Fig. 9: Turbomach standard modular filtration system

The intake and ventilation ducts can be adapted for indoor installations of the generator set,
particularly for sites with difficult and/or complicated layouts for the installation of the gas
turbine package. Another advantage of this modular structure is that it allows customers to
modify filtering elements over time, i.e., if the package is moved to another location, if the
local ambient air quality changes or if there is a need to cool down combustion air to
increase power output and electrical efficiency.

1-7
1 Introduction

Fig. 10: Turbomach customized modular filtration system

Even though the Turbomach package design is highly standardized, it is flexible enough to
meet special requirements of the customer. As an example, if required, the control cubicle
can be supplied separately from the generator set base-frame.
As a gas turbine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Solar Turbines regularly
upgrades its product line, taking advantage of the latest innovations in aerodynamics
optimization and materials improvement in order to enhance performance and durability.
Those improvements can be implemented during the lifetime of the gas turbine package,
typically when a turbine overhaul is performed. The Turbomach package is designed to
accommodate future upgraded versions of the gas turbine unit without having to modify
critical components of the package (generator, fuel and oil systems).

1-8
1 Introduction

Fig. 11: On-site gas turbine exchange

1.4 Safety
The Turbomach gas turbine generator package is CE-marked and complies fully with
European directives such as ATEX, PED, Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive and
Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive, thus ensuring a high level of safety for the design
of the package.
The Turbomach corporate safety standards also apply on-site, with the commitment to zero
injuries made effective in stringent safety procedures for activities performed within own
premises and on customer site. Typically the respective safety manuals of customer and
Turbomach are exchanged before any activity commences in order to ensure that on-site
works are done according to the best safety standards available.

1.5 Operating the gas turbine generator package

After the commissioning team(s) of customer and Turbomach have validated the
performance test, during which parameters such as start-up reliability, loading sequence,
power output and heat rate are verified, the gas turbine generator package can be
synchronized with the local power grid, if present, and it is ready to start its commercial
operations. The unit will typically require a first inspection after 4000 hours of operation.
In the meantime, according to local conditions and chosen filtration system, the only activity
to be scheduled may be the replacement of some air filtering elements and the on-line

1-9
1 Introduction

compressor washing. These operations might as well be performed while the unit is
running.
The gas turbine package compactness, low noise level and high availability ensure smooth
integration into an existing facility. Plant operators only need to occasionally check the
operating performance of the turbine - via the remote PC or the Human Machine Interface
(HMI) panel on the skid - and then can return to their daily activities.

Fig. 12: Gas turbine control display

A dedicated, highly skilled team of the Turbomach customer service personnel is

continuously available, near customer location, to record and analyze key parameters of
the turbine as well as to promptly intervene if necessary.
When the unit reaches 30000 to 35000 hours of operation, we recommend to overhaul the
engine. The Turbomach team then replaces the used turbine with a zero-hour turbine with
the same performance levels and warranty conditions as a brand-new machine. According
to logistics, this activity takes 4 to 14 days. By the time of the overhaul, the customer can
choose, where applicable, between various upgrade options such as higher power rating or
combustion system modifications: SoLoNOx, water injection or multi-fuel combustion.

Tab. 31: Design gas fuel composition

Refer to Product Information Letter (PIL) 162 for additional information complementing the
Solar specification ES 9-98 (see chapter 8, p. 8-1).

Fuel quality is a critical factor in gas turbine operation. Owners and operators of gas
turbines are responsible for ensuring that fuel entering a turbine meets the applicable
specifications. PIL 162 complements ES 9-98 by summarizing the contaminants that may
be found in gaseous fuels, as well as recommendations for protection against these
contaminants.
