Textual Analysis
INTRODUCTION:
A. Hook: “Religion is never the problem; it’s the people who use it to gain power”
(Casablancas, n.d.). The Tausug Folktale “Parang Sabil of Abdulla and Putla Isara
During the Spanish Times," written by Indah Annura, deals with the story of a Tausug
hero who seeks guiltless death in the hands of foreign invaders in defense of Islam.
B. Author and Title: The Parang Sabil of Abdulla and Putli’ Isara in Spanish Times by Indah
Annura
A. Essential background information: In Spanish times, one of the most prominent tribes is
the Tausug. Muslims groups are recognized for their strong resistance from other
countries. Sulu, the homeland of the Tausugs, already existed under rule or Islam.
(Ingilan, 2015). The Philippine history testifies that the land of Sulu is considered to be
one of the longest history of anti-colonial resistance in Southeast Asia. According to
Sakili (1999), Parang Sabil is a religious and patriotic act that is directed against the
forces of foreign invaders.
C. Thesis: Parang Sabil does not represent bloodthirsty and treacherous Muslims but as
people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for their family.

BODY:
A.
1. Topic sentence: Any physical contact with a Muslim woman is prohibited in Islam.
2. Textual Evidence: “Abdulla, I would like to inform you that I was insulted because
a soldier seized me.” (Annura 63). “The reason he was slain was that he had
abused (her). (Annura, 95)
3. Supporting analysis: The lieutenant shamed Isara by embracing her in the river.
Abdulla went to the headquarters to do Parang Sabil and avenge His lover. In the
teachings of Islam, the person who has committed intimacy such as being alone,
touching, and staring are considered haraam as such things lead to the greater
evil which is zina and must repent to Allah. Sadly, both Abdulla and Isara lost
their lives in the middle of a fight with the Spanish colonizers.
B.
1. Topic sentence: Panglima’s wife wanted to avenge her daughter by doing Parang
Sabil.
2. Textual Evidence: “The wife jumped up (saying), “You are a useless man.” Give
me my kris, I will pick up my dear daughter.” (Annura, 125).
3. Supporting analysis: The news about Isara and Abdulla’s death spread quickly.
Matagpis, Panglima’s wife and Isara’s mother, heard about the news and
decided to get her daughter’s body. Matagpis wanted to raise her family’s dignity
by doing Parang Sabil. She knew that she would meet the same fate as her
daughter’s. With kris in her hands, she went to the headquarters and killed
several soldiers. The bullets rained on her and finally died in the hands of the
Spaniards.
C.
1. Topic sentence: Isara’s brother planned to continue the Parang Sabil.
2. Textual Evidence: “Although I am only a child, I will avenge my sister! The
Spanish soldiers, I will fight them my way!” (Annura, 140).
3. Supporting Analysis: Isara’s brother witnessed how Isara was assaulted and how
his mother died in the hands of the Spanish colonizers. He then decided to do
Parang Sabil to avenge his Family but was caught in attempt.

CONCLUSION
A. Overall summary of the textual analysis: The folktale of Parang Sabil of Abdulla and
Putla Isara shows how Muslims are being treated during the Spanish colonization.
Parang Sabil was their way of fighting infidels who tried to seize and control the whole
Archipelago of Sulu.
