Introduction
At Ahmedabad, the river encompasses a total catchment area of 10,370 Sq.Km, out
of the total basin area of 27,820 Sq.Km. Pre-project, the width of the river varied
from 300m to 425m. Until Dharoi dam was built in 1976 (approximately 200km
upstream of Ahmedabad) the Sabarmati was proneto severe and frequent flooding.
The floods in the recent past that Ahmedabad has seen are discharges from Dharoi
Dam- announced twelve hours in advance of the released water arriving in
Ahmedabad. The proposition of Vasna Barrage was initiated in 1972 for water
retention in Sabarmati and to divert water for irrigation through Fatewadi Canal.
Initially it was designed for capacity of 5 lakh cusecs having a total of 28 gates.
But due a major flood in 1973, this plan was sent to Pune for remodeling by
Central Water Commission. They increased the capacity from 5 lakh cusecs to 7.5
lakh cusecs and also increased the number of gates to 30. Vasna Barrage was
finally built at downstream of Ahmedabad in 1976 The Narmada Canal, which
crosses theriver a few kilometers upstream from the city, is part of a larger
irrigation network.
