Art Education:
Philosophies and Objectives of Art Education
“Art Education” – as the term is used in the Philippines – refers to the teaching and learning of
the visual arts, ie., drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.
This is to distinguish it from education in other artistic fields, such as music, dance and theater.

As future teacher in the field, you are expected to have a competent grasp of the various skills
required to produce work of visual art in a variety of contexts and with a variety of materials
This text is meant to guide the learning of how to teach to others – particularly children – what
you already know.
Learning Objectives:
-Demonstrate a content knowledge on the philosophies and values of art education;
-Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge fundamental in art education in managing
classroom structure responsive to learner’s diverse strengths, interests, experiences and abilities.
-Select teaching methods, learning activities and instructional materials or resources appropriate
to the learners and aligned to the objectives of the lesson;
-Design, select, organize and use appropriate and varied assessment strategies consistent with the
curriculum requirements and use the assessment data as feedback in teaching and learning
practices;
-Demonstrate a lesson applying all the necessary considerations in teaching music in the
elementary level.
