Art Education:
Philosophies and Objectives of Art Education
“Art Education” – as the term is used in the Philippines – refers to the teaching and learning of
the visual arts, ie., drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.
This is to distinguish it from education in other artistic fields, such as music, dance and theater.

As future teacher in the field, you are expected to have a competent grasp of the various skills
required to produce work of visual art in a variety of contexts and with a variety of materials
This text is meant to guide the learning of how to teach to others – particularly children – what
you already know.
Lesson 1: What are the Philosophies of Art Education?

The ultimately believes the purpose of arts education is to develop skill and technique through a
socially approved aesthetic medium.
Technique and skill are of the utmost importance in the assessment of the student’s ability to
master the art. This philosophy encourages students to trust the process and employ their
knowledge of technique and skill to ensure the best possible outcome. Although the process is
important, the true story is told by the result and the student’s ability to convey this narrative
through the final product.
Objectives of Art Education:
-Develop creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills, and nurture aesthetic sensitivity
and cultural awareness.
-Develop art skills, construct knowledge, and cultivate positive values and attitudes;
-Gain delight, enjoyment, and satisfaction through participating in art activities;
-Aesthetic sensitivity has been defined as the ability to recognize and appreciate beauty and
compositional excellence, and to judge artistic merit according to standards of aesthetic value.
-Pursue a lifelong interest in the art
-Create classrooms build out of respect and being part of something larger than yourself;
-Create a sense of freedom to express and help build self-esteem.
Importance of Art to Education and teaching:
1. Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills.
2. Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them easier to
understand.
3. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social
skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
4. Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance - all techniques that are
necessary for presentations (visual, digital) of academic work.
5. Integrating art with other disciplines reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged
in classwork.
6. Art experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful
and thorough in how they observe the world.
7. The arts provide challenges for learners at all levels.
8. Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world.
9. Young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week
through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to
participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than
children who do not participate.
10. Greater arts education led to fewer disciplinary infractions and higher attendance, graduation
rates, and test scores.

Philosophy and Objectives of Art Education
Introduction
Every child is unique and special. Every child needs to feel loved, nurtured, and assured of
having a secure, caring, and stimulating learning environment in which he/she will grow
holistically… socially, psychologically, and intellectually.
As an art teacher, it is our responsibility to help every child to develop to its full potential. It is
our responsibility to provide them with a positive and nurturing environment while guiding and
encouraging curiosity and risk-taking. All children are capable individuals. They just need a
teacher who will ignite their capabilities to develop their full potential and allow them to shine
like rare and precious gems.
Learning Objectives:
-Demonstrate a content knowledge on the philosophies and values of art education;
-Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge fundamental in art education in managing
classroom structure responsive to learner’s diverse strengths, interests, experiences and abilities.
-Select teaching methods, learning activities and instructional materials or resources appropriate
to the learners and aligned to the objectives of the lesson;
-Design, select, organize and use appropriate and varied assessment strategies consistent with the
curriculum requirements and use the assessment data as feedback in teaching and learning
practices;
-Demonstrate a lesson applying all the necessary considerations in teaching music in the
elementary level.
