OTTER

Ok, here we go!

JACK

The timer starts now!

JACK
The Movie is split up into four segments that reimagine old Twilight Zone episodes but I'll only
be focusing on the first one titled, "Time Out," about time travel. The protagonist, Bill Connor, is
salty because he got passed up for a promotion in favor of his Jewish co-worker. While at a bar
he spews all this prejudiced nonsense against Jewish, black, and Asian people, blaming them for
everything. Eventually, he storms out of the bar, and bam, he's abruptly transported to Nazi-
occupied France. He's mistaken as Jewish and chased by German officers. After escaping, he
finds himself in 1950s Alabama perceived as a black man by the Ku Klux Klan. After hiding in a
pond, he lands in the Vietnam War, perceived as the enemy and shot at by American
soldiers. Then he gets transported back to France and is captured and thrown into a train heading
to a concentration camp. In the distance, Bill spots his friends at the bar and screams for help, but
they can't see or hear him as the train pulls away ending the first segment and leaving his fate
ambiguous.
Moving into cast and crew…
The first segment was written and directed by John Landis, who's renowned for films like
Animal House and Beverly Hills Cop. His producer was the one and only Steven Spielberg,
OOOH SOUND EFFECT
known for Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, E.T., and many other Hollywood classics. Taking on the
role of Bill Connor was Vic Morrow,

EXPLOSION SOUND EFFECT
With a star-studded cast and crew, what could possibly go wrong, right?

OTTER
What could go wrong? But now it’s my turn.

CLOCK TICKING

It was a film in the 1980s. It is marked as a comedy that follows a naturalist- oh that's the wrong
word! Naturalist, living in an African nature preserve with everything from lions, elephants, and
other large animals. His family ends up visiting him and things get crazy. From there is no real
plot to the film at all. Everyone is just kind of attacked at random and in weird ways. Guns show
up even though at the beginning they mention how there are no guns on the preserve, the actor's
clothes change, hairstyles change, and it all goes wrong. It can only be described as living in a
zoo with a funhouse mirror effect. It’s just wow!

MUSIC STARTS PLAYING

The main people to know are the director Noel Marshall and his wife Tippi Hedren, they also
played husband and wife and the main characters in the film. Hedren’s daughter and Marshell’s
son played supporting roles as well. Other than that, no offense to them, that’s all you need to
know regarding cast and crew.

winning in Round 2.

MUSIC STARTS PLAYING

JACK

Well, instead of the first segment ending with Vic on the train heading to the concentration
camp, it was originally supposed to end very differently. In early drafts of the script, John Landis
was notified that the character of Bill Connor should have a more sympathetic arc and a more
redeeming quality about him. So, last minute, Landis decided that he'd actually end the story in
Vietnam. In the revised ending, Vic was intended to save two young Vietnamese orphans who
had been left behind. Cast as the orphans were child actors Myca Dinh Le (age and Renee Shin-
Yi Chen (age 6.) In the scene, there'd be pyrotechnic explosions all around
EXPLOSIONS
and a U.S. Army helicopter
HELICOPTER BUZZ
would then emerge above and target all three actors. However, the scene didn't go as planned. As
Vic rushed into the hut, grabbed the two children, and began running to safety, the helicopter
flew dangerously close to one of the pyrotechnics. Once it was detonated, the helicopter began to
spin out of control and crash-landed
CRASH SOUND
on Vic and both child actors. The rotor blades decapitated Morrow and Le, killing them instantly,
and crushed Chen. The pilot miraculously survived and, unfortunately, the cameras were rolling
the entire time. There are videos of the whole scene still on Youtube to this day. After the crash,
crew members rushed to the shallow pond desperately searching for their actors and in one video
you can even see a crew member discover Morrow's body and fall backwards in shock. There's a
book called "Fly By Night," where crew members share their testimonies and express the impact
the incident had on them. The two child actors were also hired illegally by Landis and paid under
the table to work longer hours. Landis never faced jail time for it and Steven Spielberg even
ended his friendship with him over how he handled the entire situation. Their parents were,
ironically, also of Vietnamese decent and had immigrated to the U.S. to give there children a
better life.

OTTER

That’s terrible! Are you for real?

JACK

Yup.
OTTER

It’s just-just-online?

JACK

Yes, the videos are on youtube to this day.

OTTER

Wow, that’s crazy.

JACK

Yeah, I don’t see how Roar can be worse than this.

OTTER

Now, it’s my turn!

Injuries and drama are intense in this film as it is known as the MOST dangerous film ever
made!
GASP SOUND EFFECT
The animals were all “collected” from zoos, and circuses. The director and his wife collected a
total of 71 tigers, 26 lions, 9 black panthers, 10 cougars, 2 jaguars, 4 leopards, 2 elephants, 6
black swans, 4 Canada geese, 4 cranes, 2 peacocks, 7 flamingoes, and if you though that was all
they also had 1 stork just for you. All of them were never trained, allowed to roam around their
large plot of land and estate unsupervised, unleashed, and uncolered.
ANIMAL NOISES
This was all done illegally of course. But it gets better, there were 100 injuries in 2 years from
these animals.
Just the director, Marshell, was bitten 11 times ranging from 8 puncture wounds to the leg, bitten
through the hand, almost losing an arm from a bite, face and chest bitten, and gangrene.
BITE SOUND AND ANIMAL CONTROL SOUND EFFECT

For those that don’t know gangrene is a condition where someone loses so much blood that the
bodily tissue begins to die at a rapid pace. His wife, Tippi, was no better, as she was bitten in the
head, along with many more issues as well as gangrene.
BITE SOUND
The cinematographer was scalped
by a lion named Cherries who was responsible for many of the major injuries on set. As for the
main drama, the property was later flooded by a pipe burst
FLOOD SOUNDS
and many animals escaped leading law enforcement to kill 3 of them. Including our main star
Robby who was replaced by Cherries who went on to give most of the injuries.
GUN COCK AND FIRE AND BODY DROP SOUND
After rebuilding the set for 8 months, 12 wildfires broke out.
FLAME SOUNDS
In total the film took 11 years to finish.

JACK
Wow. Wow. But what I’m hearing is nobody died.

OTTER
No. Very close to it.
Well, I guess we move on to honorable mentions now. What else could’ve happened on these
sets that made them so crazy?

OTTER
You go first.

JACK
So, if you thought that was crazy Vic Morrow also told a production assistant before they shot
the fatal scene quote I must be out of my mind to be doing this and get this eight years prior to
the incident when he was filming the movie called dirty Mary crazy Larry back in the 70s
insisted on having a $1 million life insurance policy before he would shoot any scenes involving
a helicopter he was very insistent on this and when asked why Morrow replied I have always had
a premonition of going to die in a helicopter crash.

OTTER
I feel really bad for him with those kids right Oh my God.

JACK
And the parents literally left Vietnam to go to America to give their children a better life just for
them to become actors and do a Vietnamese recreation scene where they die what?!?!?!

OTTER
All right well to follow that up a quick few things just regarding the movie itself the script
would change based on what the animals did as they were just continuously filmed all the time
and that's why the film is so heavily edited the animals were credited not only as actors but as
writers. Robbie was credited with writing the most scenes and being the most dramatic actor they
had which is the main lion for those people forgot they also put honey and other things on the
actors faces and bodies to get the animals to lick them in these scenes which is where a lot of the
injuries happened no doubt the cost to feed the crew and the animals was $4000 a week leading
to the couple to become completely bankrupt $17 million was given to make this film and it only
made about two in the box office. Our wonderful actress and director Tibbey was a fantastic
actress at this time very well known and Marshall was an American agent and Co producer and
this was his first brief directing and first time acting role was this film along with everything that
came with it.

JACK
I know damn well they're not putting honey on my face.
OTTER
I know bro freaking crazy and the scenes where they're like being thrown around and pushed
into the water it was all flooded.

JACK
Halfway through the moive the plot disappeared and it was just it was like an hour sequence of
just the family in the house just running from lions while the lions just destroy the entire house.

OTTER
And it's credited as a comedy because there's nothing else it could be.

JACK
No.

OTTER
So we're going to start ranking with cast and crew alright let's start with yours, you know you
went first and everything like that first of all very interesting I have to give that to you I think
you're a little higher than me and cast and crew. The way John Landis handled this entire
situation I'm not surprised that Steven Spielberg was like we are not friends anymore not talking
to you blocked unfriended because I do the same thing I think I think I gotta give you like a six
maybe a 7 out of 10 I'm I'm thinking that's my final vote for you what would you give yourself
and you can't say 10 OK you cannot be like it's the best I've ever done.

JACK
Well I gotta say I mean with the trial and everything I mean it was such a long process and you
know what I'm just gonna I'm gonna give myself I'm gonna give myself.

OTTER
A 6.5 OK so we're we're pretty even then I'll give you that.

JACK
Had to give myself that .5.

OTTER
That's fine alright whatever 6.5 I can deal with alright we're going to me then.

JACK
We're going to you because with the duration of that long and chaotic as shoot for all of that just
for them to get divorced at the end like the following year I mean that's pretty crazy like I feel
like if I was the husband or the wife I would look back and just be like why why did I put myself
through that for that person.

OTTER
But that's the best part is that these animals they just collected them for years and they had them
in their house even before filming while writing.

JACK
There were so many.

OTTER
Don't forget about the stork. The one stork.

JACK
I can’t believe Robbie died he was like the star but they they just replaced him with another lion.

OTTER
Cherries you didn't even notice how dare you. Well for cast and crew being that I have lions
tigers and bears taking myself like 6 maybe 7.

JACK
You gotta choose one 6 or 7.

OTTER
I have bears and lions ohh my. I'm going to go with seven for me .

JACK
All right I'll give you a 7.5.

OTTER
So does that mean I win?

JACK
Yeah.

OTTER

ohh yeah starting out strong Otter squad.

JACK
Only round 2 though.

OTTER
OK so what's next injuries and drama? Alright so we're going to start with yours decapitation
let's just you know not to mention two children dying yeah crushed by a helicopter.

JACK
Yep while their parents were watching off-screen.

OTTER
yeah if we're looking at like the therapy bill hmm we're high up there definitely high up there the
emotional turmoil of everyone involved I gotta weigh that in.

JACK
Morrow even saying how crazy he was to do this scene I got away that in I always had this
premonition for decades that he would just die in a helicopter crash.

OTTER
I know I got to weigh that in too but you put that one in honorable mentions.

JACK
That's true.

OTTER
So then we can't we can't add that in here so taking that out I got to give you like an 8 maybe a
nine it's pretty high up there.

JACK
I think we can I think we can meet in the middle and say I got a nine.

OTTER
OK and I think we could meet in the middle OK alright alright fine I can I can live with that
cause that's just freaking insane and the best part of the helicopter pilot he's alive.

JACK
He lived he walked away just just nothing,

OTTER
I don't think he walked away.
JACK
He crawled away.
OTTER
I think he was definitely distraught alright alright fine so we're ending round 2 for Jack with a 9.

JACK
Well I gotta say it you know as as chaotic and as as hard as it was to deal with all these animals
on set I mean literally what 100 animals in total overall.

OTTER
Most likely around there who cares 71 tigers 26 lions 9 Panthers 10 Cougars 2 Jaguars 4
leopards 2 elephants black Swans 64 geese 4 cranes 2 Peacocks 7th one goes in there for the
stork we're definitely close.

JACK
I gotta say I'm against animal cruelty but again you know it's like there were no deaths.

OTTER
You're right just lost limbs.

JACK
Lost limbs you know lot of blood loss your tissue slowly dying on you 100 injuries yeah and I
mean a lot of people yeah a lot of near death experiences a lot of near death experiences so you
know what I'm gonna give you an 8.

OTTER
Damn I'm I'm leaning towards 8.5.

JACK
I'll give you an 8.3.

OTTER
I'm not doing that much math.

JACK
Alright alright 8.5. end of story.

OTTER
Alright then I guess I have to hand it to you Jack you win round three.
JACK
Thank you thank I knew I would.

OTTER

So honorable mentions I guess we're gonna start with you again huh so yeah has a *******
premonition I'm sorry I you know I just had this dream one time that I don't know a helicopter
was gonna decapitate me I have a fear of snakes and that's enough for me.

JACK
I mean for him even being like it should be a stuntman went on to do it anyways it's that's
terrible.

OTTER
Absolutely terrible but that's all you got right for all the mentions.

JACK
Hold on hold on yeah that’s all I got. Hpredicted his own death.

OTTER
It's a big honorable mention 100% but I got to put it like a 5.

JACK
5.5

OTTER
If you're really going to push for 5.5 I will give you a 5.5 I can live with that but you're not going
any higher . OK so for me honorable mentions I got quite a few things mine are pretty good.

JACK
I mean the animals having to basically write this themselves just because they couldn't get them
to do what they wanted. Gary was the best lion he was the cutest he was the most he was just he
was Gary. For them to have possibly for him to possibly have been one of the lions that got put
down that really saddens me deeply so I am I am unfortunately for me at least I'm gonna have to
rate this a 6.5.

OTTER
That's right I was gonna push for a 7 but I'll take your .5 right there 6.5 I'm pretty happy with
that not to mention a week to feed this cast and crew of animals and we didn't even see all of
them they were all there.
JACK
Fly high Gary.

OTTER
And the votes are in for Jack I'm afraid I won round one he got a 6.5 to a six my vote was a 7 to
a 7.5. For round two Jack swept by .5 he got a 9. I was given an 8.5, but for round 3 Otter squad
we came back 5.5 was given to Jack and the Otter squad was awarded a 6.5 making me this
week's winner.

JACK
Okay you win.

OTTER

Eat my dust.

JACK

Yeah, live it up. You're not ready

for my next one.

OTTER

OK, tune in next week for when I
