arroz caldo at 4:10 a.m. and finished at 4:50 a.m. How long did Aliyah and her mother cook the arroz caldo?

Answer the following questions.

1. Who participates in cooking arroz caldo?
2. What time did Aliyah start cooking?
3. What time did Aliyah end cooking?
4. What is asked in the problem?
5. How will you solve the given problem?
C. Presenting Do you know that this activity has something to do with our lesson for today?

Today we will discuss finding the elapsed time in minutes and seconds. This lesson will help you gain a better understanding in finding the
the new lesson
elapsed time in minutes and seconds. Do you know how to find the elapsed time in minutes and seconds?

Let's watch the video and learn to find elapsed time in minutes and seconds.

https://youtu.be/W1MQr_gZpQ8?feature=shared
(Watch and listen carefully because you are going to answer all the questions related to the video.)
● What was the video all about?
● So, do you already know how to find the elapsed time in minutes and seconds?

This lesson is all about finding the elapsed time in minutes and seconds.
Specifically; at the end of the lesson the learners should be able to;
● finding the elapsed time in minutes and seconds,
● To calculate elapsed time using the methods, and;
● Solve word problems involving elapsed time
D. Discussing new What do we mean by Elapsed time?
concepts and practicing
Elapsed time is the length of the time when an event happened from the start to the end.

Q2
Started Time End Time
Elapsed Time: 30 minutes
To solve for the Elapsed Time we can use the 3 methods:

 Method 1: Using the Number Line (by counting the minutes or seconds)

Ex: Started Time Time Ended

5 10 15 20 25 30
| l | l | l | l | l | l |
0 10 20 30 40 50 60
Elapsed Time: 30 minutes

 Method 2: Using a chart.

Started time: 15 seconds Seconds
20 5
25 10
30 15
35 20
40 25
Ended time: 45 Seconds 30
Elapsed time: 30 seconds

 Method 3 Using Subtracting\Computation.

45 seconds
- 15 seconds
30 seconds

Elapsed time: 30 seconds

Let’s try another!

Rico and his friends started playing basketball at 8:10 am and finished at 8:55 am. How long did they play?

Questions:
1. Who played basketball? (Rico and his friends)
2. What time did they start playing? (8:10 am)
4
Q2
3. At what time did they finished playing? (8:55 am)
4. What does the problem ask you to find? (How long did they play?)

Solutions using the 3 methods:

 Method 1: Using a Number line.

Started Time Ended Time

5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45
| l | l | l | l | l | l |
8:00 8:10 8:20 8:30 8:40 8:50 9:00
Elapsed time: 45 minutes

 Method 2: Using a Chart.

Started time: 8:10 Minutes

8:20 10

8:30 20

8:40 30

8:50 40

Ended time: 8:55 45

Elapsed time: 45 minutes

 Method 3: using subtraction/computation.

8:55 minutes
- 8:10 minutes
0:45 minutes
Elapsed time: 45 minutes

So now, class let’s go back to the scenario of Aliyah and let’s answer it.
Aliyah helped her mother to participate in the barangay feeding program for the families who were at the evacuation center. They
started to cook arroz caldo at 4:10 a.m. and finished at 4:50 a.m. How long did Aliyah and her mother cook the arroz caldo?

Answer the following questions.

1. Who participates in cooking arroz caldo? (Aliyah and her mother)
2. What time did Aliyah and her mother start cooking? (4:10 am)
5
Q2
3. What time did Aliyah end cooking? (4:50 am)
4. What is asked in the problem? (How long did Aliyah and her mother cook the arroz caldo?)
5. How will you solve the given problem? (by using the 3 methods)

 We can use the Number line to solve for the answer.

Started Time Ended Time
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
| l | l | l | l | l | l |
4:00 4:10 4:20 4:30 4:40 4:50 5:00
Elapsed Time: 40 minutes

 We can use the table or chart.

Started time: 4:10 Minutes
4:20 10
4:30 20
4:40 30
End time: 4:50 40
Elapsed Time: 40 minutes

 Try also use Subtracting/ computation.

4:50
- 4:10
0:40
Elapsed Time: 40 minutes
E. Discussing new Now, that you already know how to find the actual time. Let’s proceed to solving real life related problems using the different
concepts and practicing steps in solving word problem involving elapsed time.

Q2
Last weekend, Marie and Ian helped their parents in cleaning their parents in cleaning their backyard. They started cleaning
the yard early at 6:14a.m. They were able to finish cleaning at 7:06a. m. How many minutes did they clean their backyard?

A. Understand
1. What is asked in the problem?
(The amount of time Marie and Ian cleaned the backyard.)
2. What are the given facts?
7:06 a.m. (Ended Time)
6:14a.m. (Started Time)
B. Plan
1. What operation will you use?
Subtraction
2. What is the number sentence?
7:06 – 6:14 = N
C. Solve
1. How is the solution?
7:06 Think 7:06 as 7 hours and 6 minutes.
- 6:14 Think 6:14 as 6 hours and 14 minutes.

7:06→ 6:66 (6:60+6)

- 6:14→ 6:14
0:52
D. Check and look Back
1. Check if the answer is correct
6:14
+ 0: 52
6:66 = 7:06
2. What is the answer to the problem?
Marie and Ian cleaned the backyard for 52 minutes.
