    CANOEING AND KAYAKING


    Sea Kayaking – open waters

    Two floating crafts that may take anyone to places in the water that Whitewater Kayaking – whitewater rivers
    are even difficult to access by any other means.
    Flatwater recreation – gentle paddle down a calm water
    Canoe - originated from the Carib word “kenu” which meant dugout.
    Originally made from large tree trunks Sailing – fitted with a sail
     Wide open deck
     Canoer sits on a raised seat or kneels Surf kayaking – fitted with a fin, like a surfboard
     Single bladed paddle
    Marathon racing – lengthy race down a river
    BASIC PARTS OF A CANOE
    BASIC EQUIPMENT
    Yoke – a beam in the center of a canoe
    Thwart – crossbars reinforcing the canoe  Basic floatation device
    Gunwale – acts as structural support, defines shape  Helmet
    Seat – for paddler at the bow  Appropriate clothing
    Stern – rear end  Spray skirt
    Bow – front end
     Watter bottle
    Kayak - “qajak” meaning “man’s boat” or “hunter’s boat”. For  Whistle
    hunting marine life  Compass
     Covered deck  First Aid
     extend legs and are seated low  Flashlight
     Double bladed paddle  Bilge pump

    BASIC PARTS OF A KAYAK

    Deck – top half


    Hull – bottom half HOW DOES ONE START CANOEING AND KAYAKING
    Hatch – storage
    Cockpit – Opening in the kayaks deck Learning how to get in and out
    Footbrace – where feet rest (Getting in canoe and kayak)
     Entering from shore
    CHARACTERISTICS  Entering from dock

    Length Learn the correct posture


    - The distance from the tip of the stern to the tip of the bow  The first thing to do is to relax
    Beam  While seated, lean just slightly forward from the pelvis
    - The width of the boat and is measured at the widest part  The back should be straight without being forced
     Shoulder should be slightly ahead of hips, head, or neck
     Legs should be slightly bent

    Learn the proper way of holding the paddle


    Bottom Shape (Canoeing)
     Flat – good stability in calm waters  The T-grip of the paddle should be held by top hand
     Round – designed for speed and efficiency  The bottom hand holds the shaft
     Vee – in between the flat and round bottom design boats (Kayaking)
    Profile or Sides  The recommended grip is usually the distance between
     Tumblehome Design – the sides of the boat curve inward as elbows
    they come up  The recommended grip is usually the distance between
     Flared Sides – the sides curve outward elbows
     Straight Sides – is a little bit of the two
    Paddles - the equipment to maneuver Learn the basics of making the boat move forward
     Tip (Canoeing)
     Blade  Catch – the start of the stroke
     Throat  Power Phase – bottom hand should be pulling while the
     Shaft top arm is pressing down
     Grip  Exit and Recovery – the stroke is finished when body
    rotates

    (Kayaking)
     the torso and the legs will do most of the work
     The shoulder and arms will be used to transfer power

    HEALTH RELATED BENEFITS OF PADDLING

     Improved cardiovascular fitness


     Strong muscles and muscular endurance
     Development of the torso and leg strength

    IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER

    Know first your skills in swimming and canoeing/kayaking


    Avoid paddling alone, far from coastline, in routes of ships
    Yield to safety and know where to go in case of emergency
    Always wear personal floatation device/safety equipment
    Keep hydrated

    Check weather conditions


    Always plan ahead
    Never forget to put your things in waterproof bags
    Orientations given by facilitators/leaders are important
    Equipment should be tried and always checked
