Fractional Data Protection Officer (DPO)

An early-stage edtech startup based in the USA and operating in nearly 30 countries is seeking
a fractional Data Protection Officer (DPO) to ensure compliance with data privacy regulations
and best practices. The DPO will be responsible for overseeing the company's data protection
strategy and implementing policies and procedures to protect the personal data of our users.

We are COPPA, GDPR, and HIPAA compliant, in addition to regulations from countries such as
China and Thailand. Our policies and procedures are already in place. We have a regularly
updated COPPA Safe Harbour Program Privacy shield awarded by industry leader PRIVO and
utilize VANTA to manage and monitor privacy and safeguarding.

Key Responsibilities:

● Conduct a yearly Data Protection Impact Assessment


● Implement, maintain, and improve the company's data protection policies and
procedures, in compliance with relevant regulations.
● Liaison with Chief Technology officer regularly to keep up to date with any new
implementations or needs.
● Advise the company on data protection impact assessments and any other data
protection-related issues.
● Monitor compliance with data protection regulations and company policies, and take
appropriate action in case of non-compliance.
● Act as the point of contact for data protection authorities and for individuals whose data
is processed by the company.
● Keep abreast of new data protection laws and regulations and inform the company of
any changes that may impact the company's operations.
● Provide guidance to company employees on data protection best practices and
compliance.
● Work with other teams within the company, such as the legal, product, and engineering
teams, to ensure that data protection is integrated into all aspects of the company's
operations.
● Act as a first alert and response in certain situations.

Qualifications:

1. Time-sensitive responsiveness
2. Strong understanding of relevant data protection laws and regulations.
3. Proven experience in a similar role, preferably in a tech or startup environment.
4. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
7. Strong project management skills.
8. Understanding of technology, specifically in the areas of data management and data
security.
9. The ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter with a strong commitment to data
protection and privacy.
