SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF GIVEN SIMPLE SALT – Magnesium sulphate – MgSO4

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

1. Colour: Colourless May be Absence of Cu2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+

Colour of the salt was observed
2. Appearance: Crystalline May be presence of Cl- , SO42- , CH3COO- or
Appearance of the salt was observed NO3-
3. Solubility: Soluble May be presence of NO3-, SO42-, Cl-, Br- or
A little amount of the salt was taken in a test tube and CH3CHOO-
shaken well with water.
4. Action of Heat: No characteristic Smell May be Absence of CO32-,NH4+,CH3CHOO-,
A small amount of salt is heated in a dry test tube. Cl-, Br-, NO3-
5. Flame Test: No characteristic coloured flame May be Absence of Ba2+, Ca2+, or Cu2+
A little amount of the salt was taken in a watch glass +
A drop of Conc. HCl, form a paste and introduce into the
flame.
Ash Test: White or pink coloured ash May be presence of Mg2+
6. A little amount of the salt was taken in a watch glass +
Conc.HNO3 + Cobalt nitrate solution was added. A filter
paper was soaked in the solution and ignited.

Systematic Analysis of Acid Radicals

7. Action of dil.H2SO4: No characteristic change May be Absence of CO32-, S2-, NO2- or SO32-
Small amount of salt in a dry test tube + dil.H2SO4
8. Action of Conc.H2SO4: No characteristic coloured vapours May be Absence of Cl-, Br- , NO3-,
Small amount of salt in a dry test tube + Conc.H2SO4 CH3CHOO- and I-
9. Action of Conc.H2SO4 + Cu Turnings: No characteristic coloured vapours May be Absence of NO3-
Small amount of salt in a dry test tube + few ‘Cu ’
Turnings + Conc.H2SO4. Gently heat it.
Confirmatory test for Acid Radicals

1. TEST FOR CARBONATE:

Action of dil. H2SO4: No characteristic change Absence of CO32- is confirmed
Small amount of salt + dil. H2SO4

2. TEST FOR CHLORIDE:

AgNO3 Test: No characteristic change Absence of Cl - is confirmed

Salt + water + AgNO3 solution was added

3. TEST FOR SULPHATE:

Lead acetate Test:

Salt + water + 1 ml dil. CH3COOH and heat it + 1 ml of White precipitate soluble in excess of
(CH3COO)2Pb hot NH4(CH3COO) is formed.
Presence of SO42- is confirmed
Barium chloride Test:
Salt + water + 1 ml dil. HCl (till effervescence ceased) + White precipitate insoluble in
BaCl2 solution was added. Conc.HCl

Systematic Analysis of Basic Radicals

Preparation of salt solution:

0.2 g salt + 1 ml of distilled water , shake it and gently heat it. This is called “Original solution.”

1. Analysis of zero group: No Chocolate brown precipitate Absence of O group NH4+

Ammonium ion:
O.S + 1-2 ml NaOH + Nessler’s reagent

Group Separation:
No White precipitate is obtained Absence of I group Pb2+
O.S + dil. HCl
O.S + dil. HCl + H2S gas is passed No Black precipitate is obtained Absence of II group Cu2+

O.S + NH4Cl (S) + Excess NH4OH (aq) No White precipitate is obtained Absence of III group Al3+

O.S + NH4Cl(S) + Excess NH4OH(aq) + H2S gas is passed No Dirty White precipitate is Absence of IV group Zn2+
obtained
O.S + NH4Cl(S) + Excess NH4OH(aq) + (NH4)2CO3(aq) No White precipitate is obtained Absence of V group Ba2+ or Ca2+

O.S + NH4Cl(S) + Excess NH4OH(aq) + Disodium White precipitate is obtained Presence of VI group Mg2+
hydrogen phosphate

Confirmatory Test For Basic Radicals

1.
Test for Mg2+ : GROUP VI
Magnisium is confirmed
If group–V is absent then perform the test for Mg2+ ions.

Magneson Reagent Test:

To the Original solution add dil. HCl + NaOH and Blue coloured precipitate or solution is
Magneson reagent. obtained.

Disodium Hydrogen phosphate Test:

O.S + NH4Cl(S) + Excess NH4OH(aq) and Disodium

Hydrogen phosphate. Scratch the inside of the test tube White precipitate on scratching the inner
with the help of a glass rod. walls of the test tube.
