EXPERIMENT - 6

Aim
To analyse the given salt for one anion and one cation present in it.
Material required
Boiling tubes, test tubes, test tube holder, test tube stand, delivery tube, corks,
filter papers, common lab reagents
PROCEDURE
S. Experiment Observation Inference
No.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF THE SALT
1 Noted the colour of the White Cu2+, Fe2+, Ni2+,
given salt. Co2+ , Mn2+ are
absent.
2 Noted the smell of the No Smell of ammonia. Absence Of
salt. CH3COO- and
NH4+
TEST FOR ACID RADICAL
1 2 mL Salt solution + 1 mL No gas evolved Absence of
dil.H2SO4 and warmed CO32-, S2-, SO32-,
NO2-
2 2 mL Salt solution + 1 mL Brown vapours evolved 𝐵𝑟 − May be
conc. H2SO4 +heat. present.
Confirmatory Test for Bromide(Br-) Radical
3 AgNO3 Test: A pale yellow
1 mL salt solution + dil. precipitate partially Presence of
HNO3 + AgNO3 solution. soluble in ammonium 𝐵𝑟 − confirmed
hydroxide solution is
obtained.
4 MnO2 Test: Brown vapours evolved Presence of
1g of salt + a pinch 𝐵𝑟 − confirmed.
ofMnO2 taken in a test
tube. Add 3-4 drops
conc.H2SO4and heat.
TEST FOR BASIC RADICAL
1 2mL salt solution+ 2 mL No gas evolved Absence of
NaOH solution + Heated 𝑁𝐻4+
2 Salt solution + dil. HCl No ppt Group I absent
3 Above solution + H2S gas Np Black ppt Group II absent
4 Salt solution + NH4Cl A gelatinous white Group III(Al3+)
solid + heated + NH4OH precipitate may be present
in excess added
Dissolve the precipitate in dilute HCl and divide the solution into two
parts.
5 First part+ NaOH solution A white gelatinous ppt Presence of Al3+
soluble in excess of confirmed
NaOH solution formed
6 Lake Test: A blue ppt floating in Presence of Al3+
Second part+ 2-3 drops colourless solution is confirmed
blue litmus solution + obtained
ammonium hydroxide
solution drop by drop.

RESULT: The given inorganic salt contains 𝑨𝒍𝟑+ as basic radical 𝑩𝒓− and as
acid radical. So, the salt is AlBr3
