1.3 Read the following passage and answer the questions below.
People all over the world keep a variety of pets in their homes. The most common pets are dogs and cats,
which have been domesticated for thousands of years. However, some pet owners prefer more unusual
companions such as reptiles, rodents, or even insects. Caring for these exotic pets often requires
specialized knowledge and habitats.
On farms, domesticated livestock and poultry are raised for food production. Cows, pigs, chickens, and
sheep are among the most widely raised farm animals globally. In some regions, less common livestock
like goats, donkeys, or camels may also be kept. Responsible farmers ensure their animals have adequate
space, shelter, and nutritious feed.
The protection of endangered species is a critical environmental issue. Many iconic wildlife species like
tigers, rhinos, whales, and gorillas face threats from habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.
Conservation efforts aim to protect these animals and their natural habitats through measures such as
anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, captive breeding programs, and education campaigns.
