From Director's Desk PROF. P SESHU

It gives me immense pleasure to present the second annual report of IIT Dharwad.

The Institute, in the year 2017-18, has taken considerable leaps towards establishing itself

firmly as a seat of learning. This year, we have welcomed a second batch of students from all

across the country. Our second batch of students is being taught and mentored by a steadily

growing team of young faculty members, as well as by professors from our mentor-Institute IIT

Bombay.

We have started outreach and networking activities with the rich industrial base around us. Our

students are also beginning to transform into bright young internees, with some of them

interning with companies like Google. Another proud moment for us this year was the

performance of our students in the Inter IIT Tech Meet held at IIT Madras, where they stood

sixth among all IITs for building a hexacopter from scratch. As an IIT that is taking significant,

but baby steps, we feel happy to see our students gradually blossom into engineers. In an

attempt to cater to their overall health and well-being we have also inaugurated student

mentorship programme, clay-modelling classes, counselling facilities and a well-equipped gym.

Our transit campus at WALMI has steadily shaped itself to cater the growing needs of our

Institute with a series of infrastructural improvements and changes. Besides establishing the

engineering and science labs, we have also been able to renovate and provide new hostel

buildings, games as well as recreational arenas to our expanding IIT community. We have

celebrated diverse festivals and cultural events, commemorated our Foundation Day on 30th

August, 2017, and commenced work on the development of our permanent campus.

In undertaking and achieving all of this, we continue to function as a well-knit family that is

growing in knowledge, experience and size. We remain indebted to the support of various

people, bodies and organizations especially the MHRD, the state government of Karnataka,

WALMI, PWD, our mentor-institute IIT Bombay, and many others. We are hopeful of their

continued support on the road forward.

In the days ahead, we aim to add and achieve more milestones in this historic journey. We

hope to create thinkers and tinkerers from among our bright young students, and become

dedicated mentors and guides ourselves, in our collective pursuit of excellence and innovation

at IIT Dharwad.

Electrical Engineering (EE),

Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS),

Mathematics (MA),

Mechanical Engineering (ME), and

Physics (PH)

B.Tech. Program

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes started in 2016 in three branches

namely, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical

Engineering. The total number of enrolled students in 2017-18 is 113 and 13 among

them are girl students. In total, there are 227 B.Tech. students enrolled including the

previous batch (2016-17) and 32 among them are girl students.

Academic Profile
Library

The library, besides having an excellent collection of books, also provides access to

variety of e-resources. At present library has more than 2000 books and provides

access to more than 3000 research journals of international repute.

Student Mentorship Programme

The IIT Dharwad Student Mentorship program enables constructive interaction,

guidance and mentorship of junior students by their seniors. The vision of the

programme is "to inculcate the right attitude right from the beginning". Presently, all

2nd year students are being mentored by dedicated 3rd year student-mentors.

Health Care

IIT Dharwad puts special emphasis on health and well-being of its student

community. Presently two doctors are available for consultation at the IIT Dharwad

campus thrice a week, as well as on call basis for emergency cases. All our students

are assured with Cashless Medical Health Insurance for a sum of Rs. 2,00,000/- per

annum to meet their medical needs. Under the scheme, all major hospitals of Hubli-

Dharwad, like SDM Medical College, Fortis Hospitals, etc. provide cashless medical

consultancy & treatments. The expenses incurred by students for minor treatments

can be reimbursable from the concerned department. 24×7 Ambulance (ICU on

wheels) facility is available in the campus for emergency situations. IIT Dharwad also

provides 24 × 7 app-based counselling support to its students via Yourdost- a

mental health support organization. The organization also provides a counsellor for

regular visits to the campus. The Institute conducts various sensitization and

awareness workshops for promoting overall well-being of the students.

Temporary Campus

The Institute is currently functioning from a temporary

campus in the premises belonging to WALMI

neighboring the High Court on the national highway.

The temporary campus for housing about 400 students,

faculty, staff, laboratory facilities and some sports

facilities have been provided by renovating and

refurbishing the existing building blocks and structures

in a Phased manner. Phase-I was completed in the

Academic Building
previous year (2016-17).

IIT continued the work undertaken towards

improvement of the campus infrastructure this year

under Phase-II to meet its requirement. Pursuant to

this, the institute has in addition to the existing

infrastructure recently completed renovation and

repair of class rooms, Labs, hostels (7, 8 & 9), kitchen

and dining building, open areas of the Academic

Building, water tank, road network in the campus. At

the same time, an entirely renovated Board Room and

Director’s room were designed and refurbishment Renovated Hostels

works were completed. Using the drone, the campus

layout survey was carried out. The Deputy

Commissioner inaugurated some of the works that

were completed in Phase-II on 19th February 2018.

During the year, planning, design and estimate works

under Phase-III activities as approved by the BoG

through the concurrence of BWC were taken up to be

entrusted to State PWD. Some of the

photographs/snapshots are provided here displaying

the various completed activities this year.

Permanent Campus

The permanent campus is just across the National Highway located about 3.5 km

from the temporary campus. The site has an area of about 188 hectares (470.2

acres). IIT CAMPUS AREA about 470.2 acres (1895962.2811 sq. m) excludes forest

area of about 67 acres (272416.2625 sq. m). Drone was also employed to conduct

an aerial survey. This Aerial study provided Mapping Data (both contours and

Orthomosaic), photos of various spots, places locations including the forest zone,

boundaries, and detailed video covering the entire topology including the

surroundings adjoining the boundaries. The Orthomosaic data is with a resolution of

about 10cm/pixel and is georeferenced. This facilitated conduct not only the

Ecology Management studies but also the architects to design/landscape buildings

and even overlap drawing files since it has latitude and longitude details, and

elevation levels. Detailed contour survey and the Ecological Management Plan were

carried out during the year. Keeping in view the need for Development and Design

of New/Permanent Campus, steps were taken for the selection of the MPA/

Consultant through the process of EoI and issuance of RFP to the 26 empanelled

applicants. This required adherence and follow up of the required guidelines and

concurrence of the Building Works Committee (BWC) and approval of the Chairman,

of the Board of Governors (BoG) wherever necessary.

The duly constituted High Power Committee carried out the evaluation process of

the competitive applicants in two stages and selected the Master Plan Architect/

Consultant. Thus, the process that began in September 2017 was completed by end

of January 2018. The M/s Suresh Goel & Associates, New Delhi were duly appointed

Master Plan Architect/ Consultant in March 2018 following the due process. It is

envisaged that under Phase-1, these buildings will be completed in two steps,

namely Phase-1A and Phase-1B. Phase-1A of construction is being planned to be

ready in 2 years (2020) with all necessary buildings and utilities, so that these

portions will be occupied and operationalized quickly. Phase-1B of construction for

the remaining buildings should be ready in five-year period (2024) to make the

Phase-1 of campus fully operational. Construction of Compound wall work was

entrusted to Karnataka State PWD. The perimeter of the wall is about 7.4km that

proposes to have about 5 entry/exit gates. Some of the photographs show the

permanent campus layout and features.
