What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master Division of Fractions.

The module is divided into two (2) lessons, namely:

Lesson 1. Division of Fractions and Mixed Fractions.

Lesson 2. Solving Routine or Non-routine Problems involving
Division

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. divide fraction by another fraction or by a mixed fraction;
2. divide mixed fraction by another mixed fraction;
3. solve routine problems involving division of fractions without
or with any of the other operations;
4. solve routine problems involving division of mixed numbers
without or with any of the other operations.

What’s New
Read and analyze the problem.

During the community quarantine, some of us experienced “panic

buying”. People rushed into going to supermarket, groceries and even
pharmacies to buy a large amounts of food and other basic needs to stock in
their houses. Let us see what Mrs. Fernandez did during this time.

After watching the news that there would be a lockdown in Metro

Manila, Mrs. Fernandez went to the grocery to buy some goods. One of the
1
goods she bought was 50 kilograms of rice. If she cooked 12 kilograms every
day, how many days will 50 kilograms of rice last?

Guided Questions:
1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are the given facts?
3. How are you going to solve the problem?
4. What can say about Mrs. Fernandez?
5. Is your mother like Mrs. Fernandez too? In what way?

What is It
Example 1
To solve the problem above, we can use the RSTUVW Approach. Let’s
analyze the problem.

1. Read the problem carefully. Problem: Number of days

a 50-kilogram of rice will last

2. Study the relevant facts in Given: 50 kilogramss of rice

1
bought the problem and 1 kilograms of rice cooked

Example 2
Read and analyze the problem.

To earn a living for his family, Mang Kardo plans to harvest his
1 1
cabbages in their farm. On the first day, he harvested 12 2 kg and another 8 3
2
kg on the second day. If he could sell 6 5 kg a day, how many days would it
take to sell all the harvested cabbages?

Guided Questions:

1. How does Mang Kardo earn a living?

2. How many kilograms of cabbage did he harvest on the first day? On
the second day?
3. How will you solve the problem?

To solve the problem, we can use Polya’s four-step process:

1. Understand the problem
a. What is asked?
The number of days he will sell the cabbage.
b. What are the given facts?
1
12 kg of cabbage on the first day,
2
1
8 3 kg of cabbage on the second day
2
6 5 a day

2. Make a plan

What operations shall we use to solve the problem?

1 1 2
Add 12 2 kg and 8 3 kg of cabbage. Then divide the sum by 6 5 .
1 1 2
(12 2 + 8 3 ) ÷ (6 5) = 𝑛
3. Solve the problem

1 1 2
Solve: (12 2 + 8 3 ) ÷ (6 5) = 𝑛

13

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Let’s add first the mixed fractions inside the parenthesis.

1 1 1 1 3 2 5
(12 2 + 8 3 )=(12 + 8 ) + (2 + ) = 20 + (6 + ) = 20 6
3 6

2
Now, let’s divide the sum by the divisor 6 4.

5 2 125 32
20 6 ÷ 6 5 = ÷
6 5

125 5 125 𝑥 5 625 49

= 𝑥 = = = 3 192
6 32 6 𝑥 32 192

49
Answer: Mang Kardo can sell the cabbage in 3 192 days.

4. Look Back

Let us check if our answer makes sense.

49 2 625 32 625 𝑥 32 5 𝑥 125 𝑥 4 𝑥 8 125 𝑥 4 500 20
3 192 𝑥 6 5 = 192 𝑥 = = = = = 20 24
5 192 𝑥 5 5𝑥3𝑥8𝑥8 3𝑥8 24

20 20 𝟓
Simplify: 20 24 = 20 24 ÷ 4 = 𝟐𝟎 𝟔

A. Analyze and solve the following problems:

1. Lhena bought 4 2 kilograms of sugar. She used 1 of it to make a milk
4
