Final Examination
Subject: Reinforced Concrete Design Code: CENG 217
Examiner: Dr. Yasmin Hefni Time Allowed: 3:00 hours
Dr. Abdallh Mostafa
Number of Pages: 2 Number of Questions: 3 Attempt all Questions

Question (1): (9marks)

Figure (1) shows a part of an intermediate
typical structural plan of a residential building;
it is required to:
a. Calculate loads, Design the critical
sections and draw the reinforcement for
beam B1 (25*60) parts ab,bc and cd
(scale 1:50) (6marks)
b. If B3 is removed, can you suggest a a
new structural system for area; jkLmno,
also without calculation sketch load
pattern distribution for the new
structural system (jkLmno) (3marks)

Given that
• Live load = 2.5 kN/m2
• Floor cover load = 1.5 kN/m2
• All beams are (25*70 cm)
• Floor height = 3.0m. γbrick = 14 kN/m3
• Walls are located on all beams with
thickness 25 cm.
• S1to S4 are solid slabs with ts=12cm, S5
is solid slabs with ts=15cm.
• S7 is one-way hollow block slab with
thickness =25cm.
• The block dimensions are 20x40x20cm
• Weight of block = 150 N (0.15kN)
• Fcu = 25 N/mm2 Fy = 350 N/mm2
• Fy (Stirrups)= 240 N/mm2
• µmax = 5.28x10-4 fcu Figure (1)

Question (2): (17 marks)

For the roof illustrated in figure (1), it is required to:
a. Design all slabs S1to S5 as solid slabs. (4marks)
b. Design slabs S6 and S7 as one way hollow block slabs. (4marks)
c. Draw details of reinforcement of all slabs on the plan (5marks)
d. Draw all required reinforcement details for slabs, ribs, solid parts and the required sections
(scale 1:50) (4 marks).

Question (3): (14 marks)
Figure (2) shows a general layout of flat slab, the column height is 3.5m. It is required to:
a. Using the empirical method calculate, distribute the moment
in both field and column strips. (2 marks)
b. Design and draw the reinforcement of the shown slab (scale
1:100) (5 marks)
c. Design, draw reinforcement and Check punching for column
C1 (As short column) (4 marks)

Given that
- Floor cover load (F.C.) = 2.0 kN/m2
- Live load (L.L.) = 3.0 kN/m2
- Slab thickness = 20 cm
- Wall load = 3.0 kN/m2.
- Fcu = 30 N/mm2 Figure (2)
- Fy = 400 N/mm2

d. Choose the correct answer: ( 3 Marks)

1 -In RC tied columns, the maximum spacing between stirrups should not exceed
a-15 times the largest diameter of any longitudinal bar but not more than 200 mm.
b-15 times the smallest diameter of any longitudinal bar but not more than 200 mm.
c-15 times the smallest diameter of any longitudinal bar but not less than 200 mm.
2- The Egyptian code requires a strength reduction factor for concrete "γc" in the design
of axially loaded compression members which equals to:
a- 1.50 b- 1.35 c- 1.75
3- The mode of failure of axially loaded ------- columns is brittle similar to the failure of
concrete cylinder in compression test.
a- tied b- spiral
