WARNING! THIS DENOTES INFORMATION THAT, IF IGNORED, MAY RESULT IN A

DANGER TO THE HEALTH OR SAFETY OF THE OPERATOR, SERVICE
ENGINEER OR OTHER PERSONS IN THE VICINITY.

CAUTION: This denotes information that, if ignored, may result in damage to,
excessive wear or unsatisfactory performance of the equipment.

NOTE: This denotes information of particular importance to help the user understand or adjust the
equipment.

1.2.2 Service Precautions

The following precautions must be observed when the spectrometer is being adjusted or serviced:
1. All repair, adjustment, or alignment must strictly adhere to a scheme of work, approved by an
authorised person or board, where this is a requirement in the country where the equipment is
installed. In this case the scheme must be part of the relevant local service instructions.
2. Always check the condition of the equipment on arrival.
3. Check the operation of all safety circuits and devices before operation, and periodically.
4. Exercise extreme care if any safety circuit or device is bypassed during fault-finding.

GOTO CHAPTER LIST

Page 1 - 10 PW2400/PW2404 and PW2600/PW2606 Service Manual 041222
5. Do not leave the system unattended and in a potentially dangerous condition during fault
finding, such that another person can be inadvertently endangered. Make use of suitable
warning signs. YOU are responsible.
6. When working with X-rays, constantly monitor the radiation level. Whenever possible, ensure
that the generator kV and mA settings are at their lowest levels during servicing.
7. Always replace any protective shielding (radiation or electrical) as soon as possible after
servicing or adjustment.
8. Ensure that all safety devices and circuits are in their normal operating state before returning
the system to its operating condition.
9. Make a safety check when a job is finished, and demonstrate to the customer that the system
can be operated safely.
10. Obtain written approval (signature) when the system is returned to the customer for normal
operation.

1.2.3 Electrical Connections

Most units are connected to mains voltage, care must be taken when any covers are removed.
The HT supply, HT cable, and X-ray tube can have a potential of 60 kV present, therefore ensure that
the safety circuits are correct. Disable the HT supply before handling or disconnecting these parts.
The voltage on the HT cable connected to the X-ray tube decays slowly to zero when the HT supply is
switched off. Always wait at least four minutes after switching off before disconnecting the cable and, as
an additional precaution, always touch the central point of the HT connector to an earthing point on the
spectrometer each time that it is disconnected, to ensure that the HT capacitor in the HT supply is fully
discharged.

1.2.4 Care of Analysing Crystals

Crystals are delicate and expensive parts, and must be handled with care. Their efficiency can be
maintained by taking the following precautions:
Most crystals are hygroscopic and absorb water from the atmosphere, therefore:
• Never put a crystal into a spectrometer unless the spectrometer is absolutely dry. Subjecting a
crystal containing water to a vacuum can cause that crystal to be destroyed.
• Always store unused crystals in a vacuum (for example under a bell jar), in a desiccator, or in
a hermetically sealed container with a desiccant (for example: silica gel).
• All crystals are delicate, therefore always hold them by the edges of the aluminium support and
never touch the crystal itself.

WARNING! THE CRYSTAL TLAP CONTAINS THE TOXIC ELEMENT THALLIUM. THIS
CRYSTAL IS SOLUBLE IN WATER, AND CAN POISON BY SKIN CONTACT.
ALWAYS HANDLE IT WITH EXTREME CARE, AVOID SKIN CONTACT AND,
AFTER HANDLING IT, WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY.

There is no guaranteed method for cleaning analysing crystals. Cleaning should only be attempted as
last resort, when a point has been reached where the efficiency of the crystal has become so low that
the choice is between trying to clean it or throwing it away. A method that has sometimes been
successful is described in Chapter 9.

1.2.5 Static Handling Precautions

Many electronic components, particularly integrated circuits, are liable to damage by electro-static
discharge. This generally occurs due to poor handling procedures. The following general procedures
should be followed when working on any electronic components or assemblies:
◆ Store and transport assemblies and components in their original packaging. Alternatively, the
circuits may be packed in special conductive materials or carriers. These short all connections
together or insulate them from external contact.
◆ Work on an earthed conductive surface when testing the circuits, or transferring them from one
carrier to another.
◆ The person handling the circuits should be earthed, via a conductive wrist strap.
◆ Do not insert/remove circuits while the power is on or apply input signals to the circuit while
power is switched off.
◆ Soldering iron tips must be kept at the same potential as the circuits.
◆ Keep all non-conductive materials away from the static safe work area.

1.2.6 Beryllium

WARNING! FUMES OR THE DUST FROM BERYLLIUM, AND ITS COMPOUNDS, CAN BE
HAZARDOUS IF INHALED. DURING USE, CORROSION OF BERYLLIUM MAY
OCCUR. THE BERYLLIUM MUST NOT BE CUT, MACHINED OR HANDLED IN
ANY WAY. DISPOSAL OF BERYLLIUM PRODUCTS MUST COMPLY WITH ALL
APPLICABLE NATIONAL REGULATIONS. REFER TO PANALYTICAL X-RAY
BASIC SAFETY MANUAL FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

1.2.7 General

For more information about safety aspects refer to the "PANalytical X-ray Equipment's Basic Safety
Manual" (order number: 4822 870 02003).
The spectrometer is a safety class 1 apparatus. This means that the connection between the protective
earth terminal and any accessible conductive parts (which could become live in the event of a fault) shall
be provided directly, by a well conducting connection.
This apparatus has been designed and tested in accordance with IEC Publication 950, and CSA C22.5
No.151: Safety Requirements for Electronic Measuring Apparatus, Laboratory Equipment under
category certification and has been supplied in a safe condition. The Instruction and Safety Manuals
contain some information and warnings which must be followed by the user to ensure safe operation and
to keep the apparatus in a safe condition.

GOTO CHAPTER LIST

Page 1 - 14 PW2400/PW2404 and PW2600/PW2606 Service Manual 041222
When the apparatus is connected to its supply, terminals may be live, and the opening of covers or
removal of parts (except those to which access can be gained by hand) is likely to expose live parts.
Whenever it is likely that the protection has been impaired, the apparatus must be disconnected from the
mains. The protection is likely to be impaired if, for example, the apparatus:
◆ Shows visible signs of damage.
◆ Fails to perform the intended measurements.
◆ Has been subjected to prolonged storage under unfavourable conditions.
◆ Has been subjected to severe transport stresses.
