PAINTING
• The art of creating meaningful effects on a flat surface by the use of pigments
• Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing in elements such
as drawing, composition, gesture (as in gestural painting), narration (as in narrative art),
and abstraction (as in abstract art).[2] Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in still
life and landscape painting), photographic, abstract, narrative, symbolistic (as in Symbolist
art), emotive (as in Expressionism) or political in nature (as in Artivism).
• In art, the term painting describes both the act and the result of the action (the nal work is called "a
painting"). The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas,
wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other
materials, including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and even whole objects.

4
Oil
• Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a
medium of drying oil, such as linseed oil, which was widely used in early
modern Europe. Often the oil was boiled with a resin such as pine resin or
even frankincense; these were called 'varnishes' and were prized for their
body and gloss.
• In oil painting, pigments are mixed with linseed oil an d applied to the
canvass. One good quality of oil paint as a medium is its flexibility.
• The artist may use a brush, palette knife, or even his bare hands when
applying paint on his canvas.
• One distinctive characteristic of oil paint, compared with other mediums, is
that it dries slowly and the painting maybe changed and worked over for a
long period of time.
• Oil paint eventually became the principal medium used for creating artworks
as its advantages became widely known. The transition began with Early
Netherlandish painting in northern Europe, and by the height of
the Renaissance oil painting techniques had almost completely
replaced tempera paints in the majority of Europe.

• Tempera paints are minerals pigments mixed with egg yolk or egg white and ore.
These egg-based emulsion binds the pigments to the surface.

• Tempera is characterized by its lm-forming properties and rapid drying rate. It

requires a more deliberate technique than oil because it does not possess the
flexibility of oil.

• Throughout the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, tempra was one of the favorite
meduims of many painters before oil was adopted. Tempera painting is usually
done wooden panel made very smooth with plaster called “gesso” (chalk and gum)

• Since this medium dries quickly, corrections are difficult to make. Thus the artist
must be precise and exact in his work. It is a well designed medium for careful
detail. One distinguishing advantage of tempera is its luminous tone- the colors

• a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a
water-soluble vehicle. The traditional and most common support for watercolor
paintings is paper; other supports include papyrus, bark papers,
plastics, vellum or leather, fabric, wood and canvas.

• Watercolor is difficult to handle because producing warm and rich tones using this
medium proves to be a challenge. Place your screenshot here

• On the contrary, watercolor pigments invite brilliance and a variety of hues. Simple
and clear spontaneity is its principal essence.

• While changes may be made once the paint has been applied, such changes normally
tend to make the color less luminous. These effect are rendered by watercolor
artist through some techniques.

*is a painting medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment
and a binder.
• The pigments used in pastels are the same as those used to produce all colored
art media, including oil paints; the binder is of a neutral hue and low saturation.
• The color effect of pastels is closer to the natural dry pigments than that of any
other proccess. Because the surface of a pastel painting is fragile and easily
smudged, its preservation requires protective measures such as framing under
glass; it may also be sprayed with a xative. Nonetheless, when made with
permanent pigments and properly cared for, a pastel painting may endure
unchanged for centuries. Pastels are not susceptible, as are paintings made with
a fluid medium, to the cracking and discoloration that result from changes in the
color, opacity, or dimensions of the medium as it dries.

• Is a medium used popularly by contemporary painters because of the
transparency and quick-drying characteristics of watercolor and the
flexibility of oil combined.
• This synthetic paint mixed with acrylic emulsion as binder for coating the
surface of the artwork.
• Acrylic paints do not tend to break easily, unlike oil paints which turn
yellowish or darker a period of time

• A painting method done on a moist plaster surface with color

ground in water or a limewater mixture.
• Fresco must be done quickly because it is an exacting medium-
the moment the paint is applied to the surface, the color dry into
plaster and the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.
• The image becomes permanently xed and almost imposible to
remove.

SCULPTURE

19
What are Sculptures?
• the art of making two- or three- dimensional
representative or abstract forms, by the use of
different mediums.

• is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three

dimensions. It is one of the plastic arts. Durable
sculptural processes originally used carving (the
removal of material) and modelling (the addition of
material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and
other materials but, since Modernism, there has been an
almost complete freedom of materials and process. A
wide variety of materials may be worked by removal
such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling,
or moulded or cast.
