Dinagat Island in Oven
Dehydrating, sweating, and collapsing are today's biggest anxiety troubles for the weather
nowadays is different. Yes, it’s the sunny climate, a horrid one, a vicious heat that could affect hundreds
of lives which may lead to death. DepEd suspended the conduct of ‘in-person’ or ‘face-to-face’ classes
due to the extreme heat that the Philippines experienced. Dinagat Islands is also affected, gladly not an
extreme effect. The heat is very crucial and dangerous that students experience it, not just students but
also farmers, drivers, teachers, citizens; even the Dinagatnons.
Dinagat Islands' highest reported temperature was 29°C, “It is not really extremely hot but it can
still affect our health from 9 AM to 3 PM if you are exposed or radiated in the sun” stated OIC-SDS
Florence Almaden. According to Health Sections, heat can cause headaches, heat strokes, skin allergies,
and heat rashes which are considered as normal due to the heat index. There have been cases that
students, in the most affected areas of schools, are passing out or even having supreme headaches – which
is very dangerous to all students.
Moreover, climate change has something to do with the heat that Dinagatnons are experiencing
today as OIC-ASDS Bryan Arreo said. It is also caused by humankind, especially the throwing and
burning of trash everywhere in the surroundings. Aside from that, the rising of tropical waters also caused
the change of climate; Dinagat Island is one of the main affected areas. Due to the reports, classes in
every affected area have been suspended by DepEd – from face-to-face classes to modular classes. The
closing of this school year is soon to happen in the last week of May.
However, the suspension of classes caused many students a stressful education. The sooner the
closing of the school year, also is the sooner many activities and lessons to catch up. It may be for the
safety of the students but stressful activities and tasks are inevitable. Certainly, most of the students will
take a rest, leaving the modular activities on the table, and will cram the night before the day of the
deadline.
Nevertheless, teachers, supervisors, and other staff below DepEd understand this kind of situation
the students are handling – well some are. They can limit the giving of performance tasks and activities,
students should also experience once again the rest they deserve. For the advisors to check and compute
the grades or scores will also be a small problem when there are less activities passed.
As the sun shines closely, the lives of people will also crumple and faint. Think of it as a plant,
the leaves will turn yellow and slowly will dry when it is exposed to the sun for a little too long – the
body that we have is not different from the leaves. It may seem like the Dinagatnons are living inside an
oven but the practice of staying healthy will surely help to prevent and overcome this extreme heat. [V]
