Assignment 2

The movie "Sully" is a powerful and inspiring portrayal of the true

story of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who saved the lives of
all 155 passengers and crew members on board US Airways Flight 1549
after both engines failed. The movie effectively highlights the
pressure and emotions that Captain Sullenberger faced during the
emergency landing on the Hudson River, as well as the aftermath of the
event, including the investigation into his actions.

Throughout the movie, we see Captain Sullenberger going through the

six stages of decision-making as he faces the life-threatening
situation of landing a plane without any engines. Let's explore these
six stages in more detail:

Identifying and diagnosing the problem: Captain Sullenberger quickly

realizes that the plane's engines have failed due to bird strikes. He
immediately assesses the situation and knows that he needs to make a
quick decision to save the lives of everyone on board.

Generating alternative solutions: Sully considers several

alternatives, including landing at nearby airports or returning to
LaGuardia airport. However, he realizes that these options are not
feasible due to the lack of altitude and speed of the plane. He
finally considers the option of landing in the Hudson River, which he
believes to be the safest choice.

Evaluating alternatives: Sully carefully evaluates the pros and cons

of each alternative, including the risks to the passengers and crew,
the chances of success, and the potential impact on people and
buildings on the ground. After thorough evaluation, he decides that
landing the plane in the Hudson River is the safest option for
everyone on board.

Making the choice: After considering all the options, Sully makes the
decision to land the plane in the Hudson River. He believes this to be
the safest choice for everyone on board and quickly communicates his
decision to the passengers and crew, keeping them calm and reassuring
them that everything will be okay.

Implementing the decision: Sully uses his years of experience and

training to land the plane safely in the river. He communicates with
the passengers and crew to make sure everyone is prepared and knows
what to do. He also works with air traffic control to ensure
everything is safe during the landing.

Evaluating the decision: After the successful landing, Sully and his
crew evaluate their decision-making process and discuss whether they
could have done anything differently. They ultimately decide that they
made the best choice they could, and they saved many lives.

Captain Sully's decision to land the plane in the Hudson River was the
best alternative because it was the safest choice for everyone on
board. Sully considered all the available options, evaluated the risks
and benefits of each, and made the decision that had the highest
chance of success while minimizing the risks to passengers and crew.
He used his experience and training to execute the decision and landed
the plane safely in the river.

In conclusion, the movie "Sully" is a powerful and inspiring portrayal

of Captain Sullenberger's heroic actions during the highlights the six
stages of decision-making that Sully went through as he made the life-
saving decision to land the plane in the Hudson River. By considering
all the options, evaluating the risks and benefits, and choosing the
best alternative, Sully and his crew were able to save the lives of
all the passengers and crew on board. This movie is a reminder of the
importance of quick thinking, expertise, and teamwork in high-pressure
situations, and it's a movie that I would highly recommend.
