1. GOALS

Establish a work procedure for carrying out electrical tests on protection relays. The procedure allows
the activities to be carried out and the necessary resources to be identified.

2. DEPARTURE DOCUMENTATION
To carry out electrical tests on the protection relays, it is necessary to have the following
documentation:
- Work order.
- Document 5 Min Talk.
- Verification of PPE and Tools.
- Relay technical manual: operation, installation and maintenance.
- Functional diagrams of the circuit to be intervened.

3. RESOURCES

3.1 Staff

To carry out this work, qualified personnel must be considered, as stated below:
- 01 Specialist: For the execution of relay tests.
- 01 Electrical Technician: Support for relay testing.

3.2 Equipment
It is necessary to use:
 01 OMICRON 356 test case.

 Very powerful current sources for testing even high load electromechanical relays
 High current amplitudes for testing 1 and 5 A relays
 High precision and versatility for testing static and numerical relays of all types
 Integrated network for testing IED devices IEC 61850
 10-channel analog measurement and transient recording functionality

Connection mode of the OMICRON 356 suitcase.

3.3 Materials and tools

- 1 suitcase of power tools.

- 1 suitcase of mechanical tools.
- 1 Ammeter clamp.
- 1 laptop.
- Communication cables for relays.
- Industrial rag.
- Electric extension
- Peak suppressor
- Plastic tie straps

3.4 Others

- 220Vac power supply, for testing equipment.

- 220Vac / 48Vdc power supply, for relay power supply.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION

The main function of protection relays in electrical power systems is to open, sending a signal to the
power switch.
Protection relays must operate within the nominal values specified by the manufacturer, in this way they
guarantee their function for which they were designed.
Electrical tests on the protection relays are carried out in order to verify that their operation and
adjustments are in good condition; and verify the action time of each activated function.

5. SECURITY MEASURES

Before starting work, consider the following safety measures:

a) Circuit Out of Service

- Make a short talk explaining the work to be done, remembering the risks present and record it in
the corresponding document.
- Verify that the personnel who are going to carry out the work have the safety equipment in good
condition, record it in the corresponding document.
- Delimit the work area.
- Reveal the working circuit to verify that there is no voltage.
- Verify the grounding installation of the circuit to be tested.
- Check Blocking of potential energy sources.
- Continuously supervise the correct use of safety implements.

b) Circuit in Service

- Make a short talk explaining the hot work to be carried out, remembering the risks present and
record it in the corresponding document.
- Verify that the personnel who are going to carry out the work have the safety equipment in good
condition, record it in the corresponding document.
- Delimit the work area.
- Continuously supervise the correct use of safety implements.

6. METHODOLOGY

6.1 Circuit Out of Service

Procedure:

- Review of the relay operation manual.

- Identify the communication ports.
- Make the connection between the laptop and the protection relay.
- Download the relay parameters and settings.
- Review of functional diagrams and relay connection diagrams.
- The trip terminals are identified.
- The current and/or voltage injection terminals are identified.
- The sectional terminals are identified.
- Disconnect the cables from the closing and opening terminals on the relay.
- Then connect the current and/or voltage injection cables from the test case to the respective
terminals of the relay.
- Connect the relay trip wires to the terminals provided in the test case.
- Establish communication between the evidence suitcase and the laptop by using the evidence
suitcase software.
- Once all the connections have been made and reviewed, the tests begin.
- Inject current and/or secondary voltage to the relay through the test case, simulating pre-faults,
verify alarm activation and trip.
- Then, the test is carried out simulating a real failure, with opening of the power switch; Once the
tests are completed, the power is disconnected.
- Tests will be carried out for each enabled function of the relay.
- Store the test report obtained during the protection relay operability tests.
- Carefully disconnect the communication established between the protection relay and the
laptop.
- Once the tests are completed, the test cables are removed, the sectional terminals, and the
opening and closing contacts of the relay are normalized; Then we proceed to readjust all the
terminals on the protection panel and on the relay.

6.2 Circuit in Service

- Then, disconnect the cables from the closing and opening terminals on the relay.
- Disconnect the current and/or voltage cables from the back of the relay.
- The relay is isolated from its current and/or voltage inputs, and trips.
- Then, the current and/or voltage injection cables from the test case are connected to the
respective terminals of the relay.

7. ESTIMATED WORK EXECUTION TIME

The estimated time for the execution of this work per circuit is 4 hours. Depending on the type of
equipment to be intervened.
