SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP COURSE

DEGREE

ASSIGNMENT

MIGUEL ANGEL
GALLARDO TORRES
1. Read Sanders' book. Spiritual leadership. All the chapters.
Write a report about what they have read. Using the reading format.

On the Format Sheet

2. Complete all study questions (chapters 1-22 in back of book)

First Study (Chapters 1-3)

• Tell about when you aspired to be a leader in some field of life. What position did you aspire to
have? what happened?

When I was a teenager I aspired to be a missionary, bringing the gospel to various places in
the interior of the country and abroad. It happened that I had planned to study a university
degree to have a trade and support myself financially in the ministry, working part-time. Now
that I have a family and am working in a company, I have learned a lot and I am ready to
leave whenever God wants.

• Why is it so difficult for Christians today to fully agree with Paul that spiritual leadership is
an honorable ambition (“desires a good work”)? (Ch.1)

Because ministry is thought to involve a lot of sacrifice, suffering and persecution. People on
average look for convenience and comfort. Another reason is that the ministry is not valued as
a profession and has often been the object of contempt by the members of the church
themselves.

• Why aren't there enough leaders today? (Ch.2)

Because few people are willing to give up and make a commitment, which implies self-denial,
discipline and perseverance. Few are willing to pay the price.

• What is the role of leadership training if only God confers spiritual leadership? (Ch.2)

The role and training is to prepare them for the work to which they have already been called
in advance. Servants who have already proven to have an authentic calling are trained.

• How do the leadership capabilities that the world admires compare to the capabilities required
of spiritual leaders? (Mr. 10:41-45)

The world looks for a leader to have the qualities of great intellect, vigorous temperament,
character and natural enthusiasm. While the spiritual leader must show spiritual life and total
dependence on God, based on a personal relationship with him.

• How would you describe “servant leadership” to a young entrepreneur who recently became a
Christian? (Ch.3)

A young entrepreneur seeks success based on his own knowledge and efforts to obtain wealth,
comfort, recognition and fame. I would have to tell him that servant leadership does not seek
earthly benefits and that on the contrary it implies unconditional service and sacrifice.

• How would your church be different if you developed the spiritual leaders described in this
chapter? (Ch.3)

I think that the church would definitely have a growth in the quality of spiritual life in Christians;
which would also lead to numerical growth and expansion of the work.

What ambitions should be restricted for leadership?

Honor and status, comfort and reluctance to suffer.

Where do you most need to exhibit an attitude of selflessness in service?

At the moment of letting go of my earthly occupations and cares. Believe that if I get involved in
the work, God will provide for my family's needs.

Second Study (Chapters 4-7)

• In the opinion of other people, what “natural” leadership abilities do you possess? (Ch.4)

Intellect, knowledge, experience, empathy, speech, vision, planning, and personality.

• In your opinion, what is the key difference between natural leadership and spiritual leadership?
(Ch.4)

Spiritual leadership transcends the power of personality and other natural gifts; because spiritual
leadership is the sole work of the Holy Spirit.

• How can natural leadership be transformed into spiritual leadership? (Ch.4)

When the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in the life of the person and uses it for the service of God and
for his glory.

• Which of the points on Sanders' list concern you most in your own development as a leader?
(Ch.5)

• Quit the bad habit.

• Think independently.
• Maintain self-control when things go wrong.
• Welcome responsibility.
• Accept opposition without taking offense.

• How does the church decide when someone is suitable for spiritual leadership? What results has
the process produced so far? (Ch.6)

Taking into account the social, moral and mental requirements as well as personality, family and
maturity.

• Which leadership advice from Paul is appropriate for you? (Ch.6)

For me, I think I need to get my family in order, so I have to take domestic requirements into
account.

• What deficiencies and failures do you most often notice in leaders? (Ch.7)

Disinterest, conformism, carelessness, superficiality, abuse of authority, injustice,

authoritarianism, greed, pride, greed, worldliness, etc.

Is it important for someone to fail as much as Peter in order to have a humble heart?
How did some people you know learn humility? (Ch.7)

His failure was important because his heart was humiliated and broken by it. Thanks to this, he
learned to depend totally on God and not on his strength; to not look at others with arrogance and
contempt but to be a servant of all.
Who do you prefer as a leadership model, Peter or Paul? Because?

Both because I think that both can learn great virtues to imitate: from Peter, his humility and
fidelity; of Paul his character, wisdom and sacrifice for the gospel.

Which of the spiritual leadership capacities do you need the most attention in your life? How can
you begin serving her this week?

The discipline. I will set schedules for prayer and Bible study time and strive to stick to them.

Third study (chapters 8-10)

If you were granted one wish and could instantly and permanently acquire a single leadership
quality, what would you choose?

Discipline because it is my greatest weakness. Many times I have planned so many things and I
have not been consistent.

How can vision create problems? (Ch.8)

Generating disagreements with people who do not share or have the same vision; which show
indifference, opposition and rejection towards it.

Can serious people learn to be funny? Why is it difficult for a leader to maintain a sense of
humor? (Ch.9)

Yes, you can learn to be funny because the joy of the Lord allows us to maintain a good sense of
humor.
It is difficult for the leader to maintain it because he thinks that seriousness is holy and laughter is
pagan.

How can anger help a leader? How can it harm you? (Ch.9)

Anger helps the leader when it allows him to express his rejection and indignation at all forms of
injustice and sin, and it can harm him when anger causes him to commit sins.

Why is patience a particularly difficult virtue to develop in leaders?

(Ch.9)

Because sometimes we are impatient with the weaknesses of others.

What are the leadership qualities that according to you are the most scarce among Christians?
Discipline, vision, patience and humility.

• When faced with the decision to do something or go somewhere. How can a leader realize the
difference between the promptings of the Holy Spirit and one's own inclinations? (Ch.10)

The spiritual leader must be sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to do so he must remain
filled with it. The answer can be found in inner peace and in the word of God.

• What is the difference between having natural leadership gifts and having spiritual gifts? (Ch.10)

Spiritual gifts are imparted by the Holy Spirit for the edification of the Church. The natural ones
have only an earthly and human scope.
• Prepare a report card of your leadership qualities? In which of them have you improved recently?
Which ones do you still need to improve the most?

Notes from zero to twenty:

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP COURSE DEGREE 1
1.

Fourth Study (Chapters 11-14)

• During an average week, which of these activities do you spend the most time doing? Lawn care or
home projects? Reading books, magazines or newspapers? watch television, watch movies? the
sentence?

More time on home projects and watching television. Little time for reading and less time for
prayer.

• Have you ever felt sad about your prayer life? What changes did you make? (Ch.11) Yes, I
constantly feel sad for not having a disciplined and regular prayer life.

So far I haven't made any significant changes. I feel discouraged and lack discipline. However, I
think it is worth the effort and stopping doing other things.

• What are some of the obstacles that prevent people from praying? (Ch.11)

Overwork, worries, frustrations, distractions, lack of discipline, distrust in God, ingratitude,

idleness, indifference.

If time were not an important consideration, what church work would you enjoy most (Ch. 12)

Work in the ministry of Praise and Worship.

• Why do spiritual leaders often feel undue stress in their use of time? (Ch. 12)

Because it is easier to procrastinate, whether due to fear of failure or lack of industriousness and
good sense.

• If you were stranded on an island. What would be the three books (or magazine subscriptions)
that you would most like to have? (Ch.13)

The Reina Valera Bible

Pastoral Notes
Bible Concordance

• If the notes and files you read were given to a detective-psychologist to analyze your character,
what conclusion would you draw about yourself? (Ch.13)

I am a person who would like to help people find the truth in Christ and at the same time also be
free from the slavery of sin. I am a very dreamy person with little action and discipline to achieve
what is planned.

• What does it mean to lead with intensity? How does a person learn to do this? (Ch.14)

It means acting with passion, putting your heart into the work of leading others. Only the Holy
Spirit can give this fire in the spirit of the servant-leader.

• Discuss the idea of spiritual leadership being top-down rather than bottom-up. Which extremes
present dangers to this view? What problems does this point of view present? (Ch.14)
It is from the top down because the decisions are always made by the leader who is the head. The
danger in this is that the leader is authoritarian and mistreats his followers without regard for
them. The problem it solves is that through top-down spiritual leadership it avoids disorder,
anarchy and rebellion.

• What decision could you make this week to begin making better use of your time for the kingdom
of God?

Stop watching television at night and dedicate more time to studying the Word of God and
praying.

• How could you find the time you need to pray?

Stop watching television and sleeping hours to pray.

Fifth Study (Chapters 15-18)

• Leadership can be difficult and demanding. What is the price you are willing to pay?

I am willing to leave everything to get involved in missionary work full time.

What does it mean for the leader to take up his cross? (Ch.15)

The cross means sacrifice in obedience. Abandon personal preferences, give up legitimate and
natural desires for the love of God.

How should leaders deal with impartial criticism and rejection? (Ch.15)

In the face of impartial criticism, they must thank and acknowledge their mistakes. In the face of
rejection, remain firm in your vocation, strengthening yourself in the Lord.

• Which of Benson's rules for life is most difficult for you to follow? (Chap. 16)

Murmur of activity
Lack of time
Neglect
Treat obligations freely with freedom and joy
Correct with love
Don't seek recognition
Avoid complaining when it is not considered

• What is the difference between good commitment (opposite of stubbornness) and bad commitment
(opposite of obligation)? How can you know when the commitment is right and good? (Ch.17)

Good commitment is based on dependency, and bad commitment is based on a lack of

identification, effort and perseverance.

• How long does it take to overcome the feeling of failure? Who do you argue with about failure?
(Ch.17)

Immediately, I tried to learn the lesson of failure and I no longer remember the matter.
I discuss failure with God directly in prayer.

• Which test of leadership do you fear most? (Ch.17)

Failure, because I fear that I will not even be able to begin ministerial work.
• How do you know that you have communicated the instructions carefully enough? How might
ambiguities in the delegation of responsibilities cause you concern? (Ch.18)

When they have been communicated clearly and in writing.

I worry that important details have been missed and therefore the task or activity is spoiled.

• What do you do or where do you go to recover from fatigue?

I'm going on vacation to visit my parents.

• What decisions can you make this week that will help you better prepare for the leadership tests
you will ultimately face in the future?

Strengthen myself more in the Lord in prayer and fasting. Put Benson's principles into practice in
my coordination position in my secular work.

Sixth Study (Chapters 19-22)

What changes were difficult for you last year?: at work? in the church? In the home?

At work we do not have the support of the company owners and we have to obtain results even
without having the necessary resources. In the Church I cannot develop my ministry because I
do not have time during the week. At home, being away from my family because of my job
affects me.

• When you look back, how has God been working to prepare you for leadership? (Ch.19)

Putting various tests in my path. I have experienced scarcity, loneliness, silence, discipline,
“forgetfulness” and because of this I have seen my dependence and trust in God strengthened.
I have acquired greater character, courage and strength.

• That he “retired” because his best contribution had ended or because the time was right for
another leader? What feelings do I experience? (Ch.19)

Four years ago I retired from the worship ministry because I felt that my time was up and that
it was better to step aside. After that decision I felt bad for having lost my place in the
coordination but at the same time I felt calm because this allowed the development of new
talents in the church.

• What kind of dangers does popularity present to a leader? (Ch.20)

Receiving excessive recognition for their work and performance in the church and because of
this the leader becomes self-sufficient, losing his dependence on God and crediting himself for
the successes achieved, forgetting that he is only an instrument in the hand of God.

• Which of the dangers of leadership worry you the most? (Ch.21)

Pride and fame because before, I thought that the ministry would make me very recognized
and famous. I would be recognized as “a great servant” and I also find it difficult to accept and
celebrate the success of others, in other words I am selfish.

• What aspects of moderation are crucial to your suitability for spiritual service? (Ch.21)

When there are problems or failures I should not get depressed or complain against God, on
the contrary, be grateful and wait patiently for God's response.
When I find triumphs along the way, give all the credit to God and not myself.

• How do you deal with people who believe they are never wrong? (Ch.21)
Good to treat them with love and pray for them, avoiding confrontations, otherwise exhorting
them with humility.

• What do you admire most in Nehemiah's leadership? (Ch.22)

His character was a man who completely depended on God, his prayer life and his love for his
people.

• When he looks forward to the end of his life. What kind of “walls” would you like to leave
standing? (Ch.22)

I would like to leave a dual purpose ministry. The first purpose would be to combat ignorance,
confusion and deception in believers and non-believers. The second would be to avoid
corruption, moral degradation and perversion in the church and society.

• To what degree should men and women aspire to different leadership positions?

To the degree of responsibility that they are willing to accept and to which they have been
called. On the other hand, they should be willing to give their lives for Christ.

• How can you direct your own energies to better do the work God has for you?

Some time from now I'm going to quit my secular job to dedicate more time to ministry and
my goal is to be busy full time.

3. Conduct discussions with at least one of your church members and a business owner (not a family
member or church member) about what leadership means to them, and what key qualities good
leaders possess. Write 2 or 3 pages sharing your discoveries.

3.1 INTERVIEW WITH BROTHER. MOISES PEREZ AQUINO.

ACYM CHURCH MEMBER CAJAS CHICO. (20/03/08)

WHAT DOES LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

Leadership is totally depending on God to be guided by him and to communicate God's will to
others. See beyond what others can see. Go ahead of everyone being an example of effort and
sacrifice. Be Servant of All, Implacable with Sin but Lover of the Sinner.

WHAT KEY QUALITIES DO GOOD LEADERS POSSESS?

• Discipline
• Holiness
• Service
• Sacrifice
• Perseverance

3.2 INTERVIEW WITH MISS. SHIRLEY GOCHE PEREZ. UK ADMINISTRATOR

VIVENTIAL HUANCAYO. (16/04/08)

WHAT DOES LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

Leadership is
• …have a good disposition to face challenges.
• …have empathy with the others in the group.
• …have a clear vision towards the objective to be reached.
• …have good public speaking, know how to communicate in a natural way.
• …have a good profile, be an example to follow.

WHAT KEY QUALITIES DO GOOD LEADERS POSSESS?

• Innovation
• Responsibility
• Charisma
• Character
• Sacrifice and Surrender.

4. Developing leaders for the needs of the church. Leadership task. All answers must incorporate the
concepts presented in the course. Include biblical references when appropriate

• How would you define Leadership? Be sure to present concepts provided during the course.
1. The ability of a person to influence others to follow him or her.
2. It is the ability and willingness to bring men and women together for a common purpose
and the character that inspires confidence.
3. Quality that inspires confidence in subordinates so that they are willing to accept the
leader's points of view and carry out the orders.
4. A leader is a man who knows the way, who can stay ahead and who gets others to follow.

• What gifts do you believe you received with salvation? How have you used those gifts?

Evangelism = We call for repentance in youth seminaries.

Teacher = I organize creationism, apologetics, and eschatology seminars for believers.
Administration = Organize a ministry that helps create modes of self-employment.
Counseling (mercy) = Have a card where you can announce spiritual counseling.

• Explain how a leader is expected to be “among the people” leading and at the same time,
bringing up the rear? (mark 10:44)

It refers to the greatness of leadership that is in service. The true greatness of leadership is not
in seeking visibility or social approval, popularity or recognition from others, but when the
leader dedicates himself to serving others and not having others serve him. Be one of the group
and be at the service of everyone. Be the last to be the first.

• What did you understand about delegating?

Recognize the abilities and limitations of others, combined with the ability to place each person
in the position in which they perform best. Succeed in getting others to do things for
themselves. It is the ability to appreciate the gifts and talents of workers and then help them
with their personalities and jobs.

• What would you say to a person who asks: -“What does it mean to become a Christian?”-
“How can I become a Christian?”

Becoming a Christian is recognizing your sinful condition and repenting, believing and
verbally confessing that Jesus died for your sins and was resurrected; accepting him as Savior
and Lord.

• We compare church leaders to shepherds. Why is this a good analogy?

Because the flock of sheep follows their shepherd and he takes them to places where they can
eat and drink and rest. He also takes care of them, protects and defends them.

• We present four types of ministry for leaders (contact, training, discipline, and small
group). In which area are you most likely to lead? Be sure to give reasons for your answer.
