Equation of a line

In coordinate geometry, lines in a Cartesian plane can be described algebraically by

linear equations and linear functions. In two dimensions, the characteristic equation is
often given by the slope intercept form

y = mx + c
m: Gradient / slope
C: Intercept

The y intercept of a straight line is simply where the line crosses the y-axis

H.P.T.N. SILVA 6
In the above diagram the line crosses the y axis at 1, Thus, intercept (C) =+1

Examples:

(i) y = 3x + 8
m = 3, c = 8

(ii) y = -5x-7
m = -5, c = -7

(iii) 2y = -4x + 5
y = - 2x + 5/2
m = -2, C = 5/2

Example: Find the equation of the straight line joining the following pair of points

(4, 6) and (9, 15)

y = mx + c

Substitute the point (4, 6) for the above equation

6=mx4+c
6 = 4m + c 1

Substitute the point (9, 15) for the above equation

15 = m x 9 + c
15 = 9m + c

2 – 1 2
9 = 5m
9/5 = m
c = 6 – 4 x 9/5
= - 6/5

H.P.T.N. SILVA 7
Equation is
9 −6
y= x
5 5
5 y = 9x − 6

Draw a line

To draw a line on Cartesian plane, need at least two points

Example:

y = 3x + 2
x = 0 y?  y = 3 x 0 + 2 = y = 2 (0, 2)
x = 1 y?  y = 3 x 1 + 2 = 5 (1, 5)

named

(i) 4 (1,3) (ii) 3 (-2,5) (iii) 1/3 (2,-5) (iv) -5/3 (1/4,-3)

(i) ( 1, 6 ) and ( 5, 9 ) (iii) ( 1/2, 2 ) and ( 3, 6 )

(ii) ( 3, 2 ) and ( 7, -3 ) (iv) ( -1/2, 0 ) and ( 5, 11 )

If two lines are perpendicular, the product of their gradients is -1

H.P.T.N. SILVA 9
