Tech (EEE)

Note: Attempt questions from all sections as directed.

Section - A: Attempt any five questions out of six. Each question carries 06 marks. [30 Marks]

Q.1 a) What are the advantages of stationary armature? (02)

b) A 3-phase 50Hz alternator has 108 slots. The no. of conductors per phase are 360 and the flux

per pole is 0.04wb. Calculate the line emf generated when speed of it is 500 rpm. (04)

Q.2 Draw the V-curve and inverted V-curve. With a neat sketch explain the starting method of a

synchronous motor using induction motor. (6)

Q.3 a) What are the advantages of parallel operation of alternator? (02)

b) A 1000 KVA, 3300V, 3-phase star connected alternator has an armature resistance of 0.25 per

phase and a synchronous reactance of 3 per phase. Determine the voltage regulation at full load at

0.8 pf lagging. (04)

Q.4 What are the applications of a synchronous motor? Explain any two cooling methods for a

synchronous machine. (6)

Q.5 Calculate the percentage slip of an induction motor having 6-poles fed with 50 Hz supply rotating

with an actual speed of 960 rpm. Draw the load characteristic of a 3 phase induction motor. (6)

Q.6 Write short notes on the flowing: (03x03 = 6)

i) Induction Generator

ii) AC Stepper motor.

Section – B : Attempt any two questions out of three. Each question carries 10 marks. [20 Marks]

Q.7 a) Derive an EMF equation of an alternator. Give importance of pitch factor and distribution factor.

(05)

b) Explain hunting phenomenon in synchronous machines. Why it is objectionable? What are its

causes and how can it be reduced? (05)

Q.8 A turbo alternator having, a reactance of 10ohms has an armature current of 220A at unity power

factor, when running on11KVconstant frequency bus bars. If the steam admission be unchanged

and the emf raised by25%, determine the new value of machine current and power factor. If this

higher value of excitation were kept constant and steam supply gradually increased, at what power

output would the alternator break from synchronism. Find also the current and power factor to

which this maximum load corresponds and state whether this power factor is lagging or leading.

(10)

Q.9 a) Explain the phasor diagram of induction generator. (03)

b) A 20hp, 440V, 50HZ, 3Φ, 4 pole star connected IM gave the following test results

No load test: 440V, 1110W, 9.2A

Blocked rotor test: 150V, 4.5KW, 40A

Draw the circle diagram and determine at full load i) line current ii) pf iii) speed and iv) efficiency

at half load (07)

Section - C : Compulsory question [20 Marks]

Q.10 (a) A 6 pole, 3 phase 50Hz induction motor develops a maximum torque of 20 kg.m at a

speed of 970 rpm. Determine the torque exerted by the motor at 4% slip. The rotor resistance per

phase is 0.5Ω.

(03)

b) The full load power input to a 3Φ IM is 50Kw and the slip is 3%. Neglecting stator losses,

calculate the full load cu losses and total mechanical power developed. (03)

c) A cage induction motor when started by a star delta starter takes 200% of full load current and

develops 44% of full load torque at starting. Calculate the starting current if an auto transformer

with 75% tappings were employed (04)

d) Explain the construction and principle of operation of an induction generator with phasor

diagram and equivalent circuit. Discuss the need of damper windings in three phase synchronous

motor. (10)
