UNIT 14: WE WERE FISHING


PERIOD 2 – GRAMMAR 2 + SONG + PHONICS AND SPELLING
I/ Objectives:
- To learn how to say and write dates
- To learn how to use was born…
- To learn that words with tion and shion endings sound the same
- To identify this sound in texts and match it to specific words
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

Part Teacher's activities


- Greeting
- Activity: Guess the word
 T divides Ss into 2 teams
 Write words that ss have just studied on the board, showing only the first two letters
1/ Warm-up and the number of missing letters, e.g. fr__(frog).
(5’)  A student from Team A chooses a word and tries to guess the correct answer. If
he/she gets the correct answer, complete the word on the board and give the team a
point. If the student guesses incorrectly, Team B gets a point.
 The winner of the game is the team with the most points.
Lead-in
2/ Grammar - Show a photo of a baby. Write his/her date of birth on the board, e.g. 10.6.2014.
(30’) Mime holding a baby to show ss this is the date he/she was born.
- Point to the number 10 and write 10th. Then point to the number 6 and ask What
month is this? Write June. Point to the number 2024 and elicit or model twenty
fourteen.
- Practise saying the date until the ss are familiar with it.
- Write similar dates on the board and practise saying them.
Controlled activities
Ex1. Read and learn
- Focus on the grammar box. Point to the first example and write 22.6.1997 so ss can
see the two ways we write dates. Ask them to identify the ways we say the date when
it is written this way. Draw attention to the use of the and of.
- Write some dates on the board for ss to say.
- Now read the example to the class (My dad was born in 1981). Then read the rule.
Write some dates on the board e.g. 1997, 12th August, 2004, 6th May and elicit the
correct prepositions (in or on).
- Give ss a minute to study the rule silently.
- With books closed, ask questions to check understanding.
Ex2. Read the dates. Ask and answer.
- Point to the first picture and the date. Ask two ss to read the speech bubbles to the
class.
- Let ss act out the dialogues in pairs, then ask some pairs to ask and answer dates to

the class.
Ex3. Write about when you and your family were born.
- Tell ss to write sentences about when they and their family were born.
- Ss do the exercise individually.
- Go through the answers with the class.
Guided activity
- Interview: ss go around the class to ask their classmates about their date of birth.
Then T have individuals to report the outcome.
Pre- teach a song
3/ Song Lead in:
(15’) - Ask ss about the title, write it on board
- Ask ss to look at the pictures and ask “What game is the boy playing? Where's the
mother with her child? What's the boy doing at his desk? What's the girl doing?”
- Ask ss to predict what the song is about
Teach a song
Listen and sing
 Play the song the whole way through. Then play it again as ss follow the words in
their books.
 Read each line of the song and have ss repeat.
 Play the song several times for ss to sing along.
Post teach:
Discussion:
Have ss guess what their family members were doing when they were born.
Break Time (5’)
Lead in:
4/ Phonics
and - Ask ss about what they can see in 2 pictures
- Point to the words addition and fashion
Spellings
(30’) - Say 2 words and let ss repeat several times
Presentation:
- Ask ss “Tell me the same part in how we pronounce addition and fashion”
- T explains that “tion” and “shion” sound the same when they appear at the end of
certain words

Controlled activities:
Listen, point and repeat:
- T plays the recording for ss to follow and point to the words
- T plays the recording again and let ss repeat word by word
- T asks ss to explain the words’ meaning and then help them as necessary

Listen and read:


- Ss look at 2 pictures
- T asks: Is the boy in picture 1 proud or sad?

Where’s the girl in picture 2 sitting?


- T calls some ss to give answers and write them on board
- Tell ss they are going to hear two short texts. Play the recording once all the way
through.
- Play it again, pausing for ss to read and repeat.
- Ask ss to look at the pictures and point to the phrases for Exercise 1 (competition,
addition, subtraction, fashion, cushion).

Circle the words with tion and underline the words with shion.
- Focus attention on the words addition and fashion in Exercise 1 and ask ss to find the
words in the texts.
- Ask ss to find and circle all the words with tion and underline the words with shion.

Write the words in the correct box.


- Point to the pictures and the two boxes. Ask ss where you should write addition.
Elicit the ‘tion’ box.
- Let ss complete the exercise, then check answers.
Guided activities:
Activity 1:
- T asks ss to give more words ending with “tion” and “shion”
- Calls some ss to write those words on board and let the class read aloud
Activity 2:
- Tell ss you are going to read out some sentences. They should tap the desk when they
hear a word with tion and clap their hands when they hear a word with shion.
- Read out these sentences:
 Did you go to the fashion show?
 Can I ask a question?
 Is that an invitation?
 Let’s go in this shop and buy a cushion.
- Ask ss what they have learnt in the lessons, remind ss of the homework
