The Skeletal System

Structure & Function of the Skeletal System

Functions include:
 body support structure
 blood production
 muscle attachment points
 mineral storage
 Protection of organs

 Comprises the … Axiel skeleton, appendicular skeleton

 Consists of … 206 bones

Label the skeleton
Vertebrae:
Cervical (neck)
C1-C7 cranium
Thoracic
(trunk) T1-T12
Lumbar (low Mandible
back) L1-L5
clavicle
scapulas ribs
sternum
humerus

vertebrae

pelvis radius
ulna
carpals

phalanges
sacrum Femer
patella
tibia
fibula

tarsals
metatarsals phalanges
Types of Bones

Type: Example:
 Long Femur
 Short Phalanges
 Flat Sternum
 Irregular Vertebrae
 Sesamoid Tarsals/carpals
 Sutural cranium

Long bones contribute to efficient movement by…. acting as

long levers capable of generating great force.

Short bones contribute to efficient movement by …. assisting

fine motor movements and accuracy.

Connective Tissue

Ligaments: join bone to bone (joint stability).

Tendons: join muscle to bone (enabling movement).

Cartilage: allows bone to move freely over each other to

minimise friction
A joint is any place where two or
more bones meet:
Movable joints

 Allow the bones they connect to move

There are four types of movable joints:

 Gliding joint – which allows a joint to slide over another

one. e.g. wrist.

 Ball-and-socket - which allows movement in a circle.

E.g. shoulder/hip

 Pivot joint - which permits a turning motion where one

bone rotates on another. E.g. neck
 Hinge joint - which allows for forward and backward
motion. E.g. elbow/knee

Note: There is also ellipsoid, saddle, fibrous, cartilaginous,

synovial, condyloid, plane joints.

 Synovial Fluid is a lubricant in joints, shock absorber,

contained in the joint capsule.
Name the joint, movement allowed & one specific example:

1. gliding joint 2. ball and socket

Moves: allows a join to glide over another Moves: movement in a circle

Eg wrist eg hip/shoulder

3. pivot joint 4. Hinge joint

Moves: turning motion bone rotates on another Moves: forward backward

Eg vertabrae eg elbow/knee
Brain Teasers

1. Outline what elements combine to produce movement:

skeleton, skeletal muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, cartilage

2. Newborn babies have around 305 bones, explain how the average
adult has 206 bones?
Because babies have bones that fuse together.

3. Identify the bones that make up the axial skeleton:

Cranium, mandible, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, clavicle.

4. Name the parts of the vertebral column:

Cervical, lumbar, thoracic, sacrum, coccyx

5. Identify the major sections of the vertebral column:

Cervical thoracic lumbar

6. What are the 2 main types of joints?

Ball and socket hinge joint
