Eccentricity ratio(e/t) greater than 1/6

Q) A 22 cm thick brick masonry wall carries an axial load of

12 kN/m and eccentric load of 27 kN/m at a distance of 7.33
cm from the axis of wall. Design the masonry for the wall if its
slenderness ratio is 16, Assume that joints are not raked

Solution,
Thickness of wall (t) = 0.22 m
w1 = 12 kN
w2 = 27 kN
e1 = 0 m
e2 = 0.0733 m
𝑤 𝑒 +𝜔 𝑒
Resultant eccentricity(e)= = 12𝑥0 + 27𝑥0.073 = 0.05075 m
𝑤 +𝜔 12 + 27
Eccentricity ratio=(e/t) 0.231 >(1/6)
Since eccentricity ratio is more than (1/6) there will be tension on
one face and effective thickness of wall should be reduced Cl 5.4.1.4(b)

Find Basic Compressive Stress (fb)
We can increase permissible stress by 25% as per cl.5.4.1.4 (b)

Permissible Stress (fpc)= fb*Ks*Ka*Kp =1.25*fb*Ks*Ka*Kp

From table 8 in code strength of brick should be 7.5 N/mm2 and

Grade of mortar M1
Now,
For Value of 7.5 N/mm2 find new shape modification factor
(Kp) = 1
For Value of 7.5 N/mm2 find new basic compressive stress
Basic compressive stress (fb) = 0.74 N/mm2
Permissible Stress (fpc)= fb*Ks*Ka*Kp =1.25*fb*Ks*Ka*Kp = 0.54723
fpc = 0.54723 > 0.43879008
Hence Safe
