Shapes song for kids
5 mins
- Ask students to sing along the song.

- T has set of solids of various shapes on table at front of class, each labelled with a
number.
- T elicits the difference between a solid shape (3-dimensional, has width, height and
depth) and a plane shape (2-dimensional, has width and height but no depth, i.e.
Present flat).

- T holds up one of the shapes and describes it, saying how many faces (sides) it has,
10 mins whether they are curved or plane, what shape the faces are (e.g. square, rectangle,
triangle, circle), etc.
- Which solids have:
o only faces which are rectangles (called cuboids)

- Before class, prepare the shapes from the shape craft sheet.
- Cut out the shapes from the sheet for yourself and also enough for each pair of whole class
Present students (these will be used in a pair work activity later on). It would be a good idea
information to print on card or even laminate the shapes so you can reuse them.
10 mins - Start off by showing the large square and teaching / chorusing "square".
- Hand the square to a student who says "square" and passes it on to another, each
student saying "square" as they pass it around.
- Do this for all the shapes.
