Properties
Types of Numbers

Even numbers : All multiples of 2 are called even numbers , e.g.,2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 , ....... are all even
numbers .

Odd numbers : Numbers which are not multiples of 2 are called odd numbers , e.g., 1 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 9 ,
...... are all odd numbers .

Perfect numbers : If the sum of all the factors of a number is two times the number then the number
is called a perfect number, e.g. The factors of 6 are 1 , 2 , 3 and 6 .

Co-prime numbers : Two numbers having only ‘1’ as a common factor are called co-prime numbers ,
e.g. , 5 and 8 are co-prime numbers.

Natural Numbers or Counting Numbers or Positive Numbers: The set of all positive numbers starting
at 1 that have no fractional or decimal part: also called whole numbers .

Whole Numbers : The set of all natural numbers and 0 .

Integers : The set of all whole numbers, including negative natural numbers .
Examples ........ -5 , -4 , -3 , -2 , -1 , 0 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 .............

Rational Numbers : The set of all numbers that can be written by dividing one integer by another .
These include any number that can be written as a fraction or ratio .

Irrational Numbers : The set of all numbers that are not rational numbers . These are numbers that
cannot be written by dividing one integer by another . When we write an irrational number as
decimal , it goes on forever , without repeating itself .

Examples √5 = 2.2360679774997...

√2 =1.41421356237309504880168872420969807856967187537694...
“...” means that the number continues on forever
0.25 is not irrational because it terminates or ends .
0.34715715715... is not irrational because the digits repeat themselves .

Real Numbers : The set of all numbers on a number line . Real Numbers include all numbers include
all rational number and irrational numbers . This can be zero , positive or negative integers ,
decimals , fractional , etc.

Prime Numbers : All the elements in the set of prime numbers are divisible by only two factors ,
namely 1 and the element itself .
Example : 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 11 , 13 ,.......

Composite number : Each element in the set of composite numbers has at least one factor other
than 1 and the number itself .
Example : 6 have four factors 1 , 2 , 3 , 6 .

Note
Numbers less than zero are located to the left of 0 on the number line .

Numbers are greater than 0 are located to the right of 0 on the number line .

Some other example


48 is natural number , whole number , integer , composite number , rational numbers & real
numbers .

0 is whole number , integer , rational and real

⅔ is rational and real .

6.675 is rational and real .

√5 = 2.2360679774997......... is irrational and real .

Some Important Points About Decimals


1.Terminating Decimals are decimals that have no repeating digit or group of digits .
All terminating decimals are rational numbers
To terminate means to end .
For example : 0.25
2.Repeating decimals are decimals that go on infinitely but one or more digits repeat
themselves . All repeating decimals are rational numbers .All repeating decimals are rational
numbers .
Example :

The bar over the digits “3” means that all of those digits repeat infinitely .
