- Extended metaphor about romeo and juliet because her parents didn't like her boyfriend
- “I'm standing there, On a balcony in summer air, See the lights, see the party, the ball
gowns, See you make your way through the crowd” she uses scenes in romeo and juliet
to compare it to her love
- Another example is when she says “You'll be the prince, and I'll be the princess
- It's a love story, baby, just say yes" - she's pretending her and her boyfriend at the time
were in a love story like Romeo and Juliet.
- Another metaphor is when she says “Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter” -
scarlet letter was a term used in the 1600s to describe people who commit crimes - once
again related to Romeo and Juliet which would be considered a crime to the 2 families.
- Hyperbole because she's over dramatic about her love for him and how they cant be
together because of their parents
- “We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew” - they wouldn't be actually dead if her
parents knew they were together, but Romeo and Juliet would have, so she makes the
connection to herself but makes it more dramatic for the storyline of the song.
- She also says “Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel” -- she obviously
doesn't actually need to be saved in this lyric but she says this line to make it more dramatic
Japanese Denim:
- Daniel uses a lot of metaphors in his songs to talk about love
- This song is also an extended metaphor comparing a pair of blue jeans that last forever
to his eternal love for this girl.
- “My blue jeans, Will last me all, My life, ohh yes, So should we” he compares his love to
japanese denim (the name of the song) because japanese denim is known to last longer
which is why it's so expensive as well.
- Another metaphor is when he says “You're my four leaf clover” meaning just he's lucky
to have her and she's a positive force in his life.
- Repetition is used in the first verse, he says “i'm so in love, so in love” which brings out
the line more and adds to the theme being love. He says this to set up for the the sweet
line that follows -- “There's no one above up above” -- which also uses repetition and
means he's so in love and she is his first priority even before god.
- Another device used is juxtaposition, when he says "There's no one above up above" he
follows it with “Forever's a long time, yes.” which basically means he doesn't know if she
wants to be with him forever since he does but it is a very long time (literally eternity) so
it seems maybe he's overthinking after talking about how much he loves her and
wondering if she'll love him, just as much, forever.
Supermodel:
- It's about heartbreak and not feeling good enough for the partner/comparing herself with
another girl
- Many metaphor used in this song as well (metaphors are often used in songs with the
theme of love as we can see)
- She starts off the first verse with “I'm writing this letter to let you know I'm really leaving”.
This is a metaphor because she's referring to the song and lyrics as her letter
- She uses some profanity in this song which contrasts the other two that were talked
about earlier.
- juxtaposition is used because the whole theme of the passion, anger, and hatred is
changed during the chorus and morphs into insecurity and sadness when she says “I
could be your supermodel if you believe, If you see it in me, see it in me, see it in me, I
don't see myself, Why I can't stay alone just by myself? Wish I was comfortable just with
myself, But I need you, but I need you, but I need you”
- We also see repetition and a metaphor in there. When she repeats “I need you, I need
you, I need you” it really shows the listener how heartbroken she is and how much it
hurts. She says “I could be your supermodel if you believe” meaning she could be the
perfect girl for him if he lets- her, which makes her spiral into her thinking she isn't good
enough for him which is where the next few lines come in. we also saw this in japanese
denim, where the artist seems to be overthinking while singing the lyrics and it shows us
the spiral they go through
- The profanity is used to indicate her anger and frustration that is being let out at the man
that broke her heart while the other two were using sweet phrases to talk about the
person they love.
- This song is more impactful and passionate than the other two because even if the other
two were talking strongly about their love, the passion and hate in this song overpowers
the sweet slow love songs.
- Heartbroken people also have more intense feelings because of the situation they had to
endure so it resonates with more people making it more fun to sing along with because
even if you are heartbroken, many people love when songs are passionate like this.
