Butterflies

Butterflies is a song that was written by Queen Naija. Naija was at one time married to a

man who was toxic and abusive toward her. Thankfully, she removed herself from that situation

and found someone who cares for her in a way she never experienced in her last relationship.

The two parts of the song show the process of allowing yourself to trust again after a harmful

relationship. This song was selected because it has a great amount of substance. It teaches one

not only how to love, but also how you should be loved.

In the first portion of the song, I thought the relationship was not serious, so I would say

Ludus' love was shown. She loves him but has difficulty being honest about her feelings because

she is unsure how he will take it. She says “I don't wanna fall so fast, but I'm open.” It seems like

she likes the feeling of being loved but may be afraid to commit because she does not want to be

heartbroken like her last relationship. Philautia love was identified because she mentioned she

has been broken and does not want to fall fast. I would say she has self-love for her because she

wants to protect her heart. After her past relationship she learned her self-worth and that she

needs the best man. The love language physical touch was indicated by the phrase "love on him"

and how she mentioned she wants to hold him. In the music video the couple doesn't hold back

on their physical love for eachother. Quality time was spent between the two because she said he

makes her laugh and he usually has her all up in her feelings. There is love between the two

because he takes the pain that she felt when she was heartbroken away. I can see that she is very

hopeful.
In part two of the song, she is in love with a different guy. The guy makes her feel special

and she felt it was a safe relationship. She mentioned “Under pressure make diamonds” meaning

something beautiful will come out of this. She went on to say “Two years forever” indicating

they both are willing to commit which is where we see pragma love. She still has the butterflies

she felt in part one of the song. In parts one and two, it is obvious that she has deep feelings for

the person she is with, but the first song has a questioning tone to it. She says thing like “I just

want to know would you catch me if I fall, if you tell me yeah, boy I might just risk it all.” The

feelings for him are still new to her and after her last heartbreak, it seems scary to let someone

else in and trust them. The second part definitely shows more of a serious relationship, where she

has allowed herself to take this risk and it has turned out well for her. Instead of the uncertainty

she was feeling in the first song, she feels secure and knows that she wants this relationship to be

long lasting, no matter the consequences that she may have to endure.

In conclusion, these songs depict such a deep and complex idea of what love can be and

how it can affect you. Different types of love, and actions committed when in these situations

can completely change how you perceive love and how you give it to others. This song shows

how after being hurt, you shouldn’t give up on love, because there is someone out there who is

willing to treat you the way that you deserve. It also shows that you shouldn’t stay in a bad

situation just because you are scared you won’t be able to find someone else. True love will

always outweigh fake or toxic love.
