IPC
Backround Big picture, marketing approach

 Having 3 different VSD products for pumps, we have 3

different approaches to market
 IPC applications are demanding - support by SIs is
needed. Volume is lower, but margins are more
attractive. Some cases there is very limited competition
(low harmonic drives with IPC features)
 With ACS550 are volume is the key issue, margins are
lower because of tough competition
 With MV Drives a swiss approach

Savings Basics

 All drives can achieve

20...50% energy savings
compared to throttling
 Energy makes 50...90% of
the life cycle costs (LCC) of
the pump station
 Savings creates pure
economical benefit for
customer
 With IPC higher level of LCC
savings available compared
© ABB Group - 43 -

to competitors
30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings Life cycle costs (LCC) elements

 Energy makes the biggest

stake in LCC, 50...90%
 Elements of LCC
 Cic Initial cost
 Cin Installation cost
 Ce Energy cost
Life-cycle costs of a pump (Gylling 2005)
 Co Operation cost
 Cm Maintenance cost
 Cs Down time cost
 Cenv Environmental cost
© ABB Group - 44 -

 Cd Decommissioning cost
30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings LCC in marketing
 In everyday business, customers
are focusing to investment cost
(Cic)
 When selling drives only with
price, competition is hard
 With IPC marketing approach
LCC is optimized to create huge
benefit for customer
 Convincing customer with LCC,
less competition and higher
margins available

30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings IPC Energy savings

 AC drive control versus other

control methods save energy
about 10...50%
 Waste water control method in
IPC easily boost savings
10...30% vs traditional control
 With parallel pumps 5...20%
additional energy saving
possible with ”Multipump ref
sync” vs traditional VSD control
© ABB Group - 46 -
30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings IPC reduces LCC

 It is estimated that
50...90% of LCC are
energy
 Having 10...20%
additional savings by
IPC in energy bill, this
amount in LCC is
same as whole
investement
 Customer gets free HW
with ACS800 IPC

IPC
Savings Savings, pump efficiency

 Pump efficiency (n) varies a

lot, much more than efficiency
of the motor or VSD
 Efficiency as a function of flow
on left
 Normally the nMAX is around
80%
 In normal pump operating area
efficiency of the pump might
vary between 40%...80%
 IPC is focusing to these facts
when controlling the speed of
the pumps
© ABB Group - 48 -
30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings Savings, Specific energy

 Specific energy = Energy used / Pumped volume

 With A and B system curves lower speed creates energy savings

Savings PumpSave, Efficiency speed example

 Operating profile: We
focus to efficiency speed
which is 80% of nominal

 Energy 0,05€/kWh
30-Nov-11
IPC
Savings PumpSave, Efficiency speed example

 As a result IPC with efficiency

speed saves almost 20% of
annual energy costs
 Annual saving almost 4 000€
 Compared to the price of a
120kVA ACS800-01 drive the
payback time is short

IPC
Savings LCC, Maintenance cost Cm
 VSD marketing with pumps is
focusing to Energy savings Ce
 IPC also generates saving in
maintenance Cm
 Priority of pumps balances the tear and
wear of pumps -> routine maintenance
for parallel pumps in same time
 Anti-jam cleans the pump to avoid
unpredicted service
 Level control uses flush effect to keep
pipelines open
 Level control runs pump close to nominal

Pump curves, why?

 Pump curves show everything,

specially the technical behaviour of
pump
 Pump curves are essential
 to be able to discuss with pump
customers,
 to understand IPC benefits in
efficiency and in parallel connection
 Pump curves, and IPC are fun
© ABB Group - 124 -
30-Nov-11
Pump and system curve

 Pump curve (downward) links

Head (H) and Flow (Q)
 Hmax when Q=0
 Qmax when H=0
 System curve (upward) tells
Static head (Hstat) and the
resistance of the system
 Shape of the curve describes
the pipeline
 Operating point in junction
© ABB Group - 125 -
30-Nov-11
VSD (variable speed drive) control

 Pump speed & flow is

controlled with VSD
 Operating point follows the
system curve, pump curve
shrinks (dash line)
 HV and QV are both smaller
compared to HN and QN
 Efficiency of the VSD control is
optimal
© ABB Group - 126 -
30-Nov-11
Throttling control

 Throttling is one flow control

method based on valves
 Throttling creates taller system
curve (dash line)
 When HT is higher, QT is
smaller
© ABB Group - 127 -
30-Nov-11
By-passing control

 By-passing is one flow control

method
 Part of the flow is rotating
round the pump, depending on
valve position
 System curve is lower
 HB is lower, QP is bigger but
because of flow rotetion
QP,REAL is smaller
© ABB Group - 128 -
30-Nov-11
On-off control

 On-off control is based on

starting and stopping the
pumps with contactor or soft
starter
 Operation follows the basic
HQ curve – pump runs in
operating point or sleeps
© ABB Group - 129 -
30-Nov-11
Efficiency curves 1/2

 Pump efficiency (n) varies a

lot, much more than efficiency
of the motor or VSD
 Efficiency as a function of flow
on left
 Normally the nMAX is around
80%
 In normal pump operating area
efficiency of the pump might
vary between 40%...80%
© ABB Group - 130 -
30-Nov-11
Efficiency curves 2/2

 Efficiency curves (dash lines)

added to pump and system
curve presentation
 Optimal efficiency follows the
system curve when Hstat = 0
 With VSD control operating
point follows system curve
 If Hstat is big and pump is
running with low speed ->
efficiency is poor
© ABB Group - 131 -
30-Nov-11
Parallel pumps

 When pumps are connected

parallel, more flow is
generated.
 Head stays the same
 QTOT is not directly the sum of
separate flows – parallel
pumps generate pressure
others need to win to be able
to make more flow.
 New operating point of a single
pump on dash line. Q1,par and
Q2,par are smaller compared to
single set-up
© ABB Group - 132 -
30-Nov-11
Serial pumps

 When pumps are in series,

more head is generated
 Flow stays the same
© ABB Group - 133 -
30-Nov-11
Flow profile, one day

 In most of the pump

applications the flow
required varies
 Example, water
consumption in
residental area
during one day
© ABB Group - 134 -
30-Nov-11
Duration curve, one year

 Duration curve
describes the
dimensioning data
for pump system
 Annual operating
time, normally
5000h/a (curve
meets X-axis)

one to efficiency
speed (eff1, eff2...)

pumps run in full
speed

IPC Multipump control, HQ curves

 Pressure boosting
station with 3 pumps
 HN nominal pump
curve
 H1, H2 and H3
describes pump
curves in single or
parallel connection
 All pumps enable run
with same speed

Affinity laws of pumps

 Affinity laws decribes the link

between speed (n), flow (Q),
head (H) and power (P) of the
pump.
 Specially the link between P
and n is essential in when
optimazing the energy
consumption of the pump
 The power (P) needed is
proportional to the cube of the
speed (n) or flow (Q)
© ABB Group - 138 -
30-Nov-11
Specific energy

 Specific energy = Energy used / Pumped volume

 With low static head the biggest energy saving potential in VSD
control -> efficiency speed of IPC Level control
